Studio Day...Chart Action...Van Gogh

BILL BLOG

Thursday January 30, 2025

Thursday morning at the Whyte House. A 55 degree high on tap today in Nashville with a little rain.

YESTERDAY

My friend Brent Burns is at the house getting ready to hit the recording studio again and we spent part of the day celebrating his debut at the Bluebird Café on Tuesday evening which was memorable…and a bucket list item for my friend. The evening could not have gone better.

But most of yesterday we were going over new songs that we’ve written together that Brent is about ready to record starting later today. Some funny songs, some beach songs per usual for him. Our mutual friend Dave Frances came over in the evening and charted out all the songs for the musicians. Dave is the session leader. Plays bass, guitar and a few other instruments and these days he travels with the great Don McClean and gets to play bass on iconic songs of Don’s like “Vincent” and “Bye Bye American Pie.” We couldn’t be in better hands.

So we’re all set…we think for the studio today and tomorrow.

SONG OF THE DAY

Today I’m choosing a wedding song that I wrote with Tim Stafford that Kristy Cox “This Is Where You Kiss Me” that I wrote with the great Jimmy Fortune and my friend Sydni Perry who sings harmony and plays fiddle for Carrie Underwood. If you’re getting married sometime in the future…this would not be a bad song to choose after the vows are said.

ON THE CHARTS

The Kristy Cox album “Let It Burn” has been a huge success in the bluegrass world. Kristy is from Australia but has lived here in Nashville for a lot of years now. But the album just returned to the Australian Charts again in the #4spot.

That album has three songs of mine on it including “God Never Made A Mountain” which landed at #5 this week on this gospel-bluegrass chart.

And the song “Country Faith” from Kristen Bearfield and Karen Peck is at #4 on that same chart. Some pretty good news there. Congrats to Kristy, Kristen and all my co-writers on those songs that are getting a little love.

HEALTH NOTES

A health report says that excess weight now costs us even more lives than smoking.

A new report finds heavy metals in nearly half of all protein powders.

Another report claims that 90% of do not eat enough vegetables. (Guilty as charged)

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

 Well, which is it?

TRAGEDY

Hard not to be thinking about the horrible plane crash with that Blackhawk in D.C. last night. Horrible. All thoughts and prayers for the families and those affected as well as the rescuers on the scene. Our daughter flew for American Airlines for several years, and our son in law flew choppers for the Army for a few years. So a story like that gives one pause for sure.

SUPER BOWL COMMERCIAL

Here’s another new commercial we’ll see come Super Bowl Sunday February 9 in New Orleans between the Eagles and Chiefs. This one is a reprise of the movie “When Harry Met Sally”…yea…THAT scene. It’s a commercial for Hellman’s Mayonnaise. Check it out HERE.

STARRY STARRY NIGHT

At the top of today’s Blog I mentioned how my friend Dave Frances plays bass guitar for Don McClean. One of Don’s biggest hits…and my favorite is “Vincent” which is all about Vincent Van Gogh.

So how about the story of the guy in Minnesota who buys a painting at a yard sale that turns out to be a Vincent Van Gogh painting worth 15 MILLION dollars?  Unreal. I never go to yard sales. I might need to start.

The reality of yard sales may be in what someone once said, “I will be having a yard sale to try to get rid of all the things I bought in a yard sale.”

STATISTICS SAY

Single women own something like 3 million more homes than single men do. Some of that has to do with women living longer than us guys. There’s a lot of widows who are owners. They outlive us…then they become a single woman home owner.

Which reminds me of a really funny song my late friend Kacey Jones wrote and recorded years ago that always got big laughs…”WaitingFor The Guy To Die”.

VALENTINE DAY

What to get her? Maybe this Lego bouquet?

822 Legos put together will give you that arrangement of fake red roses. Sells for about 50 bucks on Amazon right now.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Death Is Nation’s Top Killer. (What else would it be?!)

TODAY

I’m headed with Brent Burns to tape a segment on the nationally syndicated radio show Big D and Bubba. Several years ago Brent was their guest and sang our song “I’m Going Ugly Early” live and the folks at Koch Records were listening. They called and asked for a copy of our song and danged if they didn’t have Cledus T. Judd record our SONG. Here’s hoping that happens again this morning!

Then the rest of the day the two of will be in a Nashville recording studio recording some new songs with some great musicians.

Have a great Thursday!

Storm Weary...Wrestling Church...Gators

BILL BLOG Friday April 4, 2025  Friday morning in soggy Nashville.   YESTERDAY It was another day of storms, tornadoes, and a whole lot of flooding. And it sounds like we could get more and nobody wants that. Folks are storm-weary from the constant flood and tornado warnings that have been lighting up our phones for the past couple of days and nights. Hallways have become bedrooms for some. Schools are still closed today because of the flooding and damage and the weather forecast predicts that we are still not done with this system that just won’t go away. There are now 5 confirmed deaths so far.   Across the region where these storms have been constant the weather service has issued over 300 tornado warnings. There were a lot of big wind-walls like this one that hit near Nashville.   Selmer, Tennessee…also near Nashville was really hit hard.   Our house is on a hill so we don’t worry much about flooding. But I’m going to...

Tornado Night...Good Music News...Buckaroo Lullaby

BILL BLOG Thursday April 3, 2025   Thursday morning. It’s about 5 AM as I’m starting this blog and it’s been a really long night with tornado warnings. LOTS of them. We were hunkered down for an hour and a half in the middle of the night in our safe place. Our tornado warning just lifted but there may be more on the way. Lots of hail…large hail and winds and VERY heavy rain that is going to hang around and cause major flooding all over the Nashville area.   As I’m trying to get this blog in this Thursday morning, I have the TV on watching the radar for updates. When the sun rises at about 6:30 I’m hoping to look out and see our trees still standing. And I’m rooting for the power to stay on as well. We’ve already had 2 deaths reported and it’s early.   And the weather folks are saying we could have another system coming through on Saturday. It’s been a long while since I’ve sat through a stormy system that lasts as long as this one is going to. A...

April Fools Day...Christmas Song...Cheap States

BILL BLOG Tuesday April 1, 2025   Tuesday morning. April Fool’s Day. Don’t fall for anything day.   The big storm that rolled through Sunday night included 3 tornados cooled things off in Nashville considerably. The hoodies and jackets came out after they’d been put away.   YESTERDAY My writing session was with Angus Gill and his housemate Blue Foley joined the two of us. Blue is from Utah originally, produces a big songwriters festival in Denmark every year, has had two Grammy nominations in his past, and Ashley McBryde to name one artist has recorded songs he has written.   Several months back I was over at their house and Blue was upstairs trying to put something together with tool belt on. I said, “Some assembly required huh”?   And that lit him up. So yesterday we wrote a really cool Christmas tune with that title.   It was good getting to know Blue better and it’s always fun writing young Angus.   SON...
