April Fools Day...Christmas Song...Cheap States

BILL BLOG

Tuesday April 1, 2025

Tuesday morning. April Fool’s Day. Don’t fall for anything day.

The big storm that rolled through Sunday night included 3 tornados cooled things off in Nashville considerably. The hoodies and jackets came out after they’d been put away.

YESTERDAY

My writing session was with Angus Gill and his housemate Blue Foley joined the two of us. Blue is from Utah originally, produces a big songwriters festival in Denmark every year, has had two Grammy nominations in his past, and Ashley McBryde to name one artist has recorded songs he has written.

Several months back I was over at their house and Blue was upstairs trying to put something together with tool belt on. I said, “Some assembly required huh”?  And that lit him up. So yesterday we wrote a really cool Christmas tune with that title.

It was good getting to know Blue better and it’s always fun writing young Angus.

SONG OF THE DAY

Today’s song is “Dirt Road” written with Jerry Salley and the artist Kristy Cox. Born from an idea I brought into the writing room that day and everyone knew instantly what the song should be about. Unplugging. Living off the grid a bit. A simpler life. The song turned out great so thank you Kristy for recording it.

NEW GIG

I got booked to be part of a team building exercise on Friday, May 2 in Nashville. I’ll be one of six songwriters who will be writing songs for a big company coming to do the Music City thing. Each writer will have six different groups from the company to write a parody song with. Line dancing songs from hits that are pre-determined. We write a verse and a chorus in 30 minutes and send them out of the room where they will join an instructor to teach them how to line dance to the song we just wrote. Should be crazy…but fun. Thanks to songwriter Brian White for including me in the group.

SCHEDULE

Here’s my show schedule for the next little bit.

April 12…Private House Concert south Nashville.

May 1…Listening Room Café Nashville with “Hits & Grins”.

May 2…Omni Hotel Nashville for that team-building exercise.

May 3…Star Struck Farms Lebanon, TN with “Hits & Grins”.

May 24-26…Pensacola, Florida with Freedom Sings USA writing songs with vets.

HEALTH NOTES

Alzheimer’s risk rises when the amount of deep sleep falls according to a new study.

Over 200 people, including the crew, were infected with the Norovirus on a Cunard Cruise ship.

Health officials say there is a new blood test that can diagnose Alzheimer diseases and track the progression as well.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

What?

CHEAP STATES

Dave Ramsey just listed his cheapest states to live in. Here are the top 5 for cheap.

5 Arkansas

4 Mississippi

3 Kansas

2 Oklahoma

And the cheapest state to live in is West Virginia.

Here in Tennessee?  We came in the 9th cheapest state to live in while my home state of Missouri was ranked #7.

FROM A MARRIED GUY

“My wife and I often exchange opinions. I come with my own and leave with hers”.

CYBERTRUCK

How about one of our Tennessee farmers using his Tesla Cyber-Truck in a very farm way?

Yep. He’s out spreading manure with his.

BROKE CHICKEN WINGS

The Hooters franchise just declared bankruptcy. Figures. I just bought stock in orange.

CHEAP TICKET

You know your baseball team is bad when you can buy a ticket to watch them play for just one dollar. That’s the case with the Chicago White Sox as some tickets can be bought on Stub Hub for just a buck. And the season has just started!

MEGA MILLIONS

Starting this month, the cost of a Mega Million lottery ticket will jump from 2 dollars to 5 dollars. Officials say that will lead to a lot of billion-dollar jackpot winners. Cool. But I still think I have a better chance of being a billionaire using the Jed Clampett method. I’ve got a shotgun, now all I need is some “bubbling crude”.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Forecasters Call for Weather On Monday. (Yep. Pretty good chance of that I’d say)

TODAY

I’m writing with two former American Idol stars today. Janelle Arthur who finished in the top 5 one year.

And Lauren Mascitti who just wows everyone with her voice on every stage she’s been on since her appearance on the show.

There’s only one non-idol in this trio today folks.

Have a great Tuesday!

ACM Awards Show...Frank Brown Songwriters Festival...Mother's Day Weekend

BILL BLOG Friday May 9, 2025  Here we go sneaking into a weekend. It’s Friday. Just 71 for the high today in Nashville.   YESTERDAY My Thursday morning started online writing a new up-tempo bluegrass song with Troy Engle in Pennsylvania. Troy plays every instrument that has strings on it, sings, writes, produces…not much he can’t do musically. When he lived in Nashville, he hung out a lot with Tom T Hall , played on numerous recording sessions, and was out on the road playing some instrument with the likes of Eric Church , The Isaacs and a long list of country stars.   But several years ago, Troy moved back to PA with his family and plays some shows up there with his family band, but still does a lot of recording work from home. He told me yesterday that his daughter may enroll at a University in Nashville next year and that might bring him back to Music City. It would be great to have him here and get to work him in person more.   ...

Friends Honored...Father's Day...Freedom Sings USA Trip

BILL BLOG Monday June 16, 2025   Another Monday has rolled around. And it’s a packing day for me with a road trip tomorrow to Illinois. More on that at the end of today’s Blog.   We will hit 85 for a high today in Nashville.   Meanwhile, over the weekend, the National Weather Service issued the “first-ever” heat warning for Alaska.   THE WEEKEND Friday morning, I wrote a new song with my friend Rick Lang , who was in town for a week’s worth of songwriting. Rick lives out in New Hampshire, but drives to Nashville at least once a month to write. He always brings great song ideas with him, and we wrote one of those Friday morning.  His “Blue Collar Gospel” album, “Songs of Rick Lang” has done very well for Billy Blue Records. I was blessed to be a writer on the title track that was recorded by our friend Jerry Salley with the Oak Ridge Boys .     And he’s working towards another full album project that will be kind of un...

Illinois Today...Some Nominations...Bluebird Tickets On Sale

BILL BLOG Wednesday June 18, 2025   Good morning from Heyworth, Illinois. We have a 74 degree high on tap here today with some rain mixed with the sun.   YESTERDAY Myself and 4 other Nashville songwriters made the trip from Nashville up to Heyworth for our Freedom Sings USA retreat here where today we will write some veteran stories into songs.   You know you’re in central Illinois when you roll past these bad boys.   This is our second trip to Heyworth, which is just 10 minutes away from Bloomington, Illinois. The event is held at the local American Legion Hall, where they treated me, Bobby Tomberlin , Steve Dean & Bill DiLuigi to a great dinner. And then the 4 of us played music for those gathered before we came back to the hotel to rest up for today.  Small town, great folks who are proud of their town, and patriotic.   LUCKY One of the founders of Freedom Sings USA is Don Goodman , who is also a hit writ...
