Snowed In...Chart News...Cantore Is In Town (Not Good)

BILL BLOG

Friday January 10, 2025

Friday morning and snow and the weekend are both arriving. Anywhere between 6 to 8 inches to accumulate here in Music City. And folks in the south don’t know how to drive in the snow. Geez. They’re saying over 90 million will be affected in the country with snow, ice bringing on massive travel problems.

YESTERDAY

It was a “get ready to be locked in” Thursday for the storm that’s going to pile snow on us today. Gas up, grocery up, kind of day. Our road will be impassable all weekend and probably into the first of the week without 4 wheel drive. Fortunately, we have really good neighbors who do have a 4X4 who have offered to get me where I’ll need to be come Monday maybe Tuesday or more next week. Can’t beat having good neighbors.

LAST NIGHT

I was glued to the couch (where I’m going to be for a few days now because of the winter storm) watching the Orange Bowl game in Miami that Notre Dame pulled out at the end over Penn State. Heck of a football game. Notre Dame will play in the championship game against the winner of the Texas-Ohio State game later tonight at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Hopefully that game will he half as good as last nights game.

SOME GOOD NEWS

The Mountain Bluegrass-Gospel end of the year chart came out yesterday and it was pretty cool to see 3 of my songs in the best of year end list.

God Never Made A Mountain” by Kristy Cox came in #11 for the year written with Josh Shilling and Andrea Pearson.

Blue Collar Gospel” landed in the #13 spot from Jerry Salley and the Oak Ridge Boys written with Jerry and Rick Lang.

And “Country Faith” by Kristen Leigh Bearfield featuring gospel great Karen Peck is in the #24 slot written with Kristen and Bob Minner.

Pretty good way to wind up 2024 musically…a blessing for sure.

 NEW SHOW

I’ll be in Chattanooga February 21 and 22 for Freedom Sings USA where myself and songwriters Steve Dean, Don Goodman, Bobby Tomberlin and Mutt Cooper will write songs with veterans from that area that wraps up with a concert on that Saturday night where each of us will perform those songs written earlier in the day with a veteran, with each veteran sitting beside the songwriter as the song is performed. I always look forward to being part of something this “red, white, and blue”. Just to be there when those veterans are recognize and applauded is really something…every time.

SONG OF THE DAY

Choosing this song makes good sense for today as Nashville has been invaded by Jim Cantore…the guy nobody wants to see in their town because it means bad weather is on the way. So today’s song is titled “Jim Cantore” that Brent Burns and I wrote years ago that Brent recorded.

This was Brent’s idea…and I was hesitant to write it at the time because I didn’t really know about who Jim Cantore was. Didn’t watch the Weather Channel really. But I’m glad I gave in and helped him write it because the song gets HUGE laughs anytime either of us sing it. Especially when it’s sung on or near a beach.

And here’s a funny side story on that song. Again, several years ago after a damaging hurricane, some folks put together a Trop Rock (beach type) album where several artists in that genre donated a song to be put on that album to help raise money to benefit those who needed help after that hurricane.

One day on the Weather Channel…Jim Cantore was at the desk on TV with his two morning co-anchors when they surprised him by playing a bit of our “Jim Cantore” song…plugging the charitable album. The two co-anchors laughed while it was playing…Jim Cantore?  Not so much.

Listen to the song…I’ll bet you will laugh as well.

HEALTH NOTES

For coffee drinkers like me comes this research that concludes only having coffee in the morning is associated with a 16% lower risk of premature death from any cause and a 31% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. Those who drink coffee all day didn’t have a reduction in risk.

A new report warns that there are over 35,000 online pharmacies that are illegal and could be selling dangerous and ineffective drugs. Buyer beware.

Scientists are saying that diabetes, heart disease cases are skyrocketing and the key reason they are pinpointing is sugary drinks.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

 AI

How about this. In a survey 41% of employers worldwide say they will be reducing staffs by 2030 with AI replacing those jobs. Yep…Dylan was right again. The times they is a changing.

THIN MINTS

It’s Girl Scout cookie time. And Wendy’s is jumping on that train by offering up a Thin Mint Frosty. Uh huh. Pretty sure I’m going to have to try that bad boy.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Parents Keep Kids Home To Protest School Closings. (Yea…that’ll show em!)

TODAY

I was to write in person with my Australian friend Angus Gill today but that’s impossible with the roads being the way they are…so we’ll hook up electronically like we did many times when Angus was still living in Australia…he lives here in Nashville full time now. Technology is not all bad after all.

And then I’m going to just hunker down for a few days and wait for the snow to melt enough to get down the driveway.

Have a great weekend!

A Duo Write...Wienermobile Applications...Love Tom

BILL BLOG Thursday December 19, 2024   Thursday morning has arrived and after some heavy rain here in Nashville yesterday it will cool off to a high of just 45 today.   YESTERDAY I had such a fun write with 2/3rds of the “ Three Times A Lady ” trio.   That would be Victoria Camp and a pregnant Kennedy Scott . Kennedy is due about the first of May of next year…and her baby bump is growing. She and the trio will be playing several weeks in a row at Dollywood come next March…so that will be an interesting challenge for her for sure.   And it was Kennedy who brought in a very cool idea that we wrote together after Victoria came up with an almost “swampy” kind of melody to fit under the lyrics. Got a pretty good feeling this one will be on their next album. Yep, a good day.   SONG OF THE DAY I’ve posted this song before but it seems appropriate to make it today’s song of the day after talking about the “Three Times A Lady”. ...

A Bluebird Show...New Album In The Mail...An Interview With An Old Friend

BILL BLOG Tuesday November 26, 2024   Tuesday morning…couple days away from carving the turkey. 50 for the high today here in Music City…bracing for some cold weather on the way.   YESTERDAY I had nothing musical on the calendar yesterday…but had one of those “had to do” things that took up a chunk of my day. Sometimes you can’t control a calendar…the calendar controls you and give you no choice. But there was some good news that came rolling in.   NEW SHOW On Tuesday January 28 I’ll be hosting a songwriter round at the world famous Bluebird Café. And the great part about this news is that I’m going to be able to add my longtime friend Brent Burns to this show…something that’s been a bucket list item for him.   And I’m so glad that I’m the one who will get to make this happen for him. EVERY songwriter wants to play the Bluebird. And somehow, even though my friend lived in Nashville and wrote very seriously for a long while, he ne...

Turkey Day...Road Schedule...No Degree Jobs

BILL BLOG Friday November 29, 2024   Happy Friday! 32 degrees right now with a high in Nashville today of 43 before dipping to a cold 25 later this evening. Time to put the trap door up. YESTERDAY Anyone else still in a turkey coma after yesterday? My wife and I sat at a long Turkey table with the Scott family and some great friends. We could not have been in better company so thank you Chris & Hillary and Lang and Linda for inviting us.   We certainly missed seeing our daughter Heather again this year and her husband Casey who are stationed overseas with the Army right now. But we were surrounded by people we love.  I hope each of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day as well.    SONG OF THE DAY Today I’m sharing a song I wrote with Paul Bogart about his youngest daughter Gentry . Paul lives out in Oklahoma…a real deal cowboy George Strait singing son of a gun. The two of us wrote a song for both of his sons that he recorded...
