Trio of Writers...Post CMA...Alligator Bread

BILL BLOG

Friday November 22, 2024

Friday…the weekend be here! Little chillier going into the weekend with a high of just 49 today and the low tonight will dip down to 37.

YESTERDAY

I rhymed with two friends yesterday Rick Lang and Kristy Cox. Though I have written with both many times, and each of them have recorded songs I’ve written with them, it was the first time the three of us sat down together. And yesterday we wrote a gospel song idea that Rick brought with him…pretty much an entire chorus.

I was able to share with Rick that I heard one of our songs “Church Bells A Ringin” that’s on the Blue Collar Gospel Album-Songs of Rick Lang on Sirius-XM on the way to our appointment sung by Danny Paisley and a group of great harmony singers. That was pretty cool.

And we got to celebrate with Kristy for her album “Let It Burn” that’s up for a couple of big Golden Guitar Awards this year including Best Album in all Genres. And that album has three songs I helped write.

So we added a new song for all of our catalogs…something that might wind up on a project for either of them somewhere down the line.

 SONG OF THE DAY

Today’s tune is “Can’t Run Away” that former American Idol star Ayla Brown. I wrote this several years ago on Music Row with Ayla and the late Rick Tiger who we lost to Covid in 2020. Rick actually introduced us…and it was the first time I had met Ayla who since then has recorded several of my songs…some of them with a duet with her husband Rob Bellamy.

Ayla’s Mom was a TV News anchor in Boston…her Dad a Senator and later an ambassador to New Zealand. So she comes from good stock. Ayla herself worked on morning radio at the country radio station in Boston until just recently. But she still finds time to sing…and in fact…just a few nights ago she sang the National Anthem at the Boston Celtics basketball game. Tall cotton there.

POST CMA AWARDS

Quote of the day comes after almost everyone spotted George Strait not looking happy to be at the awards show having to listen to some of the acts that country radio stations are calling “country” these days.

The headline reads: “Looks Like He’d Rather Be At Colonoscopy”. And he kinda does doesn’t he?

And the other post CMA moment is that of host Peyton Manning showing up at one of our Nashville honkytonks and getting on stage to sing the classic David Alan Coe hit “You Never Even Called Me By Name.” Don’t look for a Nashville record label to sign Peyton to a record deal anytime soon.

HEALTH NOTES

If you’re having trouble finding eggs at the store there’s a good reason. Avian flu which has spread across the country. More than 100 million birds have been infected.

The state department report that hunters suffer fatal heart attacks while dragging heavy deer.

Booking.com claims that 52% of Americans want to take vacations designed to extend their lifespan and improve overall health. (Think yoga mats and goats)

NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT THIS BEFORE

How did I miss that all these years?

KID GOT RICH

Now that colleges are paying high school kids to play sport…some are making bank. Michigan just stole a High School Quarterback away from LSU by giving him and NIL 10.5 million dollar contract.

Gosh, I played French horn in the Elsberry High School Band back in Missouri. Central Missouri State University where I went to college?  Never offered me a contract to come blow my horn for them. Sigh.

BLACK FRIDAY
Yep...it's that time. Black Friday sales online with deals on supposedly everything. One female shopper said this about getting a great deal.

"Its Black Friday and I just got an iPhone 14 for my husband. I thought it was a good trade."

THE BEACH

Realtors.com predicts good deals are coming because of price drop in these beach towns.

Wilmington, NC, Daytona Beach, Ocean City, Maryland, Port Isabel, TX, Michigan City, Indiana and the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

All I need now is for Michigan University to offer me a football contract and I’ll be able to buy something with an ocean view in one of those places.

GATOR BREAD

This is a hot seller for a bakery shop in New Orleans.

Yep...bread in the shape of an alligator. They sell out. Wonder if you can get a gator beignet yet at Cafe du Monde?

THE TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGING

The new Bob Dylan biopic is getting RAVE reviews. Especially for the actor playing the iconic singer-songwriter. That would be Timothee Chalamet. Some critics are already saying he nailed the “performance of the year”. Take alook here at the trailer and see what you think.

Dylan’s music will be recorded forever…long after he’s gone someday. Hard to pick a favorite. But I do love this version of his song “Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright” from the group “The Infamous Stringdusters” that they recorded informally in a studio while tape rolled.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Man Allowed Snake To Eat Him Alive And Recorded Entire Thing Before Immediately Regretting It. (Ya think?)

TODAY

Back to writing with my Kentucky buddy Alex Miller today. I just found out that he will be releasing a new duet single with former “Voice Winner” Emily Ann Roberts on Friday January 24…a song the three of us wrote that’s just a lot of fun titled “More Country Than You”. Looking forward to folks getting to hear that song in late January.

And after we finish writing we’re having lunch with an old radio friend Rollin Trehearne from Northern California who’s in town for the CMA Awards. Years ago when I was between radio and songwriting I was doing “live” Nashville news reports on a few radio stations…Rollin’s being one of those. Looking forward to seeing him again.

Have a great Friday.

Freedom Sings USA Event...A Gold Star Mom...An Old Friend Surprise

BILL BLOG Monday September 9, 2024 Monday morning and I’m back home in Nashville from Marion, Illinois. Sunshine and a high of 84 today here in Music City.       THE WEEKEND Thursday I made the three hour trip up to Marion, Illinois for our Freedom Sings USA songwriter retreat with songwriters Bobby Tomberlin , Steve Dean , Irene Kelley, and Don Goodman.   Marion is in southern Illinois…beautiful town and the folks who organized the event were so kind and passionate about honoring their veterans. Friday night they had a “meet and greet” in a beautiful old church where we had a great dinner and then played a show for all of those who attended. The Mayor, the organizers and the veterans.   Each songwriter met the veteran they were going to write with that night. This is mine. His name is Art Fager .   More on Art in a second.   FRIDAY Friday morning we gathered in yet another church for early breakfast and...

Old Radio Friend...Country Faith...Most Southern State

BILL BLOG Monday November 25, 2024   Monday morning…the start of Thanksgiving week y’all. And I still have no idea what a giblet is.   69 with some light rain in Nashville today but getting MUCH colder by weeks end. On Friday our high will only be 44 with a below freezing low of 26. Ain’t ready for none of that now.   THE WEEKEND Mine started Friday morning writing with Alex Miller at my publishing company. We tweaked an old song we’d written a couple of months ago and made it stronger…and then wrote a stone-cold-by-God-unapologetic-sad-country song. Think George Jones sad. Pitiful really…but cool in a retro country way. The kind of stuff 21 year old Alex Miller likes to sing.   Following that Alex and I met an old radio friend from Eureka, California Rollin Trehearne and his wife and their friend at a Mexican restaurant. It was fun catching up with Rollin and introducing his group to my friend Alex.   Rollin Trehearn got his ...
