Golden Guitar Awards...Comedy Songwriting Class...Ding Dongs

BILL BLOG

Friday January 24, 2025

Friday morning…ready for the weekend! A high of 35 in Nashville today. Meanwhile there’s a winter storm warning across 6 states with as much as 30 inches of snow on the way.

YESTERDAY

The big highlight of my day was grocery shopping with my wife. The difference in grocery shopping between me and her is significant. My wife will SHOP…me….I just fly down the aisle grabbing things. My wife can stare at an item and a label forever…I don’t know that I’ve ever read a label. She’s completely healthy…me…not so much. There are items of food in our pantry that I don’t recognize or have a clue what they are. But if it’s healthy…she’ll eat it.  Health food for me is a six day old Krispy Kreme donut that’s been half eaten.

And God help us when my wife sends me to shop by myself. I can never find everything on the list without calling home once or twice and asking, “where is the dark chocolate hummus at in this danged store?!

I’m asking her to make me a grocery list that look like this in the future.

 SONG OF THE DAY

The Golden Guitar Awards...the Australian version of the CMA Awards are being held in Tamworth, Australia at 3 AM my time tomorrow morning and the Kristy Cox album “Let It Burn” that has three songs of mine on it is up for “Album of the Year”. A few years ago the song “Finger Pickin’ Good” that I wrote with Kristy and producer Jerry Salley that features world class guitarist Tommy Emmanuele won “Best Bluegrass Song of the Year". Both Kristy and Tommy are native Australians but have lived and played music here in the states for a very long time now.

After we finished writing “Finger Pickin’ Good” I told both Jerry and Kristy that it would be awesome if we could somehow convince Tommy to play on this song. Kristy knows him well, asked, and he laid down some unforgettable guitar licks on the song that then went on to win the award. If you’ve not yet heard it…click the link and watch the video.

COMEDY SONGWRITING CLASS

I’ll be doing one of those this year at the Grand MesaSongwriter Festival on June 8 from 10 to Noon. The festival runs June 6-8 in Western Colorado and this class was just added to the 4 songwriter shows I’ll be part of. All that info in in the Tour section of my website.

These classes are always fun and I enjoy talking to other songwriters about how to write funny and offbeat tunes. So call me teacher Whyte on Sunday June 8.

TONIGHT

At 7 pm tonight this song “More Country Than You” will be released by Alex Miller and Emily Ann Roberts…the fun back and forth song about who’s more country that the three of us wrote. Really fun song. And here’s on more TEASE of what you can expect.

HEALTH NOTES

Actor Dick Van Dyke who is almost100 years old says he still goes to a gym three times a week. He does a lot of stretching, yoga and sit-ups.

A UK study says that eating about two servings  of processed red meat a week raised the risk of dementia by 14% compared to those who ate less than 3 servings per month.

A food expert recommends smart snacking to prevent any gains you’ve made health wise. Here’s his 3 smart snacks. Greek yogurt with berries and almonds, hard boiled eggs with veggie sticks and cottage cheese with pineapple and walnuts. (I can’t believe they didn’t mention of my smart snack. Graham crackers with whipped cream on top.)

SIGN

Yes it is.

AND THE OSCAR GOES TO

The nominations are out for the Oscars this year. In the “Best Picture” category the nominees are:

Anora

The Brutalist

A Complete Unknown

Conclave

Dune Part 2

Emilia Perez

I’m Still Here

Nickel Boys

The Substance

Wicked

How many have you seen? I’ve just seen one…”Wicked”…and it was great fun.

VALENTINE

Finally!  I think I found the perfect Valentine gift for my wife this year.

She’s gonna fall in love with me all over again when I give her Ding Dongs.

THEM AND US

Tom Brady is selling his little old mansion in the Tampa area. Already more than one offer is for over 150 MILLION dollars. Some kind of fancy double-wide now.

RENTAL

And if you can’t afford to by the Brady house…maybe you can afford to rent this shark house over in Oxford for $5,000 a month

I think the theme from “Jaws” is what you hear when you ring the doorbell. Or it should be.

TODAY

I’ll be writing with Shantell Ogden who’s out in Utah. Shantell is developing a film with a cowboy theme to it…and today we’ll be trying to write something towards that online. That should be fun chasing that.

SATURDAY
I’ll be attending a big bluegrass convention here in Nashville called SPGMA “The Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass of America. The event is held in a Sheraton Hotel near me and a who’s who of bluegrass greats will be doing shows and you can wander the halls and stop and hear bluegrass jam sessions at every corner.

There’s a big award show and the Kristy Cox album “Let It Burn” is up for Album of the Year as it is for "Album of the Year" in Australia that I mentioned earlier that I have three songs on…so I’ll be rooting big time for Kristy.

So that will be a fun hang on Saturday.

SUNDAY

NFC and AFC Championship games.

Kansas City vs Buffalo

Philadelphia vs the surprising Washington Commanders. Missouri is my home state…so I have to root for the Chiefs to get back into the Super Bowl for the 3rd year in a row.

If you need me Sunday?  Call my couch.

Have a great weekend!

A Bluebird Show...New Album In The Mail...An Interview With An Old Friend

BILL BLOG Tuesday November 26, 2024   Tuesday morning…couple days away from carving the turkey. 50 for the high today here in Music City…bracing for some cold weather on the way.   YESTERDAY I had nothing musical on the calendar yesterday…but had one of those “had to do” things that took up a chunk of my day. Sometimes you can’t control a calendar…the calendar controls you and give you no choice. But there was some good news that came rolling in.   NEW SHOW On Tuesday January 28 I’ll be hosting a songwriter round at the world famous Bluebird Café. And the great part about this news is that I’m going to be able to add my longtime friend Brent Burns to this show…something that’s been a bucket list item for him.   And I’m so glad that I’m the one who will get to make this happen for him. EVERY songwriter wants to play the Bluebird. And somehow, even though my friend lived in Nashville and wrote very seriously for a long while, he ne...

Trio of Writers...Post CMA...Alligator Bread

BILL BLOG Friday November 22, 2024   Friday…the weekend be here! Little chillier going into the weekend with a high of just 49 today and the low tonight will dip down to 37.   YESTERDAY I rhymed with two friends yesterday Rick Lang and Kristy Cox . Though I have written with both many times, and each of them have recorded songs I’ve written with them, it was the first time the three of us sat down together. And yesterday we wrote a gospel song idea that Rick brought with him…pretty much an entire chorus.      I was able to share with Rick that I heard one of our songs “ Church Bells A Ringin ” that’s on the Blue Collar Gospel Album-Songs of Rick Lang on Sirius-XM on the way to our appointment sung by Danny Paisley and a group of great harmony singers. That was pretty cool.     And we got to celebrate with Kristy for her album “Let It Burn” that’s up for a couple of big Golden Guitar Awards this year including Best Albu...

A Duo Write...Wienermobile Applications...Love Tom

BILL BLOG Thursday December 19, 2024   Thursday morning has arrived and after some heavy rain here in Nashville yesterday it will cool off to a high of just 45 today.   YESTERDAY I had such a fun write with 2/3rds of the “ Three Times A Lady ” trio.   That would be Victoria Camp and a pregnant Kennedy Scott . Kennedy is due about the first of May of next year…and her baby bump is growing. She and the trio will be playing several weeks in a row at Dollywood come next March…so that will be an interesting challenge for her for sure.   And it was Kennedy who brought in a very cool idea that we wrote together after Victoria came up with an almost “swampy” kind of melody to fit under the lyrics. Got a pretty good feeling this one will be on their next album. Yep, a good day.   SONG OF THE DAY I’ve posted this song before but it seems appropriate to make it today’s song of the day after talking about the “Three Times A Lady”. ...
