Tuesday morning…gearing up for a songwriter round at the Bluebird Café tonight.
Beautiful day in Music City coming up. Sunshine and a high of 58. By Friday we’ll be getting up near 70 for a high.
YESTERDAY
I was in a studio with bluegrass artist Caroline Owens and my friend Thomm Jutz yesterday out at Thomm’s studio that’s a part of his home out in the country. The first time the three of have sat together. I had a feeling there might be some chemistry there as Caroline has some shades of the late artist Nancy Griffith and some Alison Krauss (her musical hero) in her voice, Thomm played out on the road for Nancy as her guitarist for many years.
And it was quickly obvious my hunch was right as the two of them hit it off over music and old valuable guitars that Thomm has MANY of that Caroline could pick up and play like a kid in an expensive candy store
And within three hours we had not one but two songs completed. Caroline has had a little bronchitis she’s been dealing with, so we set another date to get together to recorded those two songs in Thomm’s recording studio.
I found myself thinking once again how lucky I was to be in a room with such incredibly creative and talented folks.
MORE ON “MORE COUNTRY”
The new single “More Country Than You” is getting multiple positive reviews which is a good thing for this song I wrote with Alex Miller and Emily Ann Roberts. Check out this GREAT REVIEW from the folks at Cmbeat.com.
SONG OF THE DAY
Speaking of reviews. The trio “Three Times A Lady” released an album I had a song on with then member Lauren Mascitti titled “ComeBack To Me” which is my “Song of the Day” today.
Get this. That project was named “The Album of the Year” by That Nashville Sound Blog. And you’ll see a lot of big names that were previous winners. Wow. Click the link and read that great review.
HEALTH NOTES
President Trump will sign an executive order to reinstate thousands of troops discharged for not taking the COVID shot.
At least on neurophysiologist is claiming that playing Pickleball…America’s fastest growing sport is not only good for the body but it’s also good for the brain.
A new study claims that drinking sparkling water leads to one feeling “full” helping with weight loss.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
Slow down folks.
SPACE SHUTTLE
Today is the 39th anniversary of the tragic explosion of the space shuttle challenger. I remember it like yesterday. I was doing the morning radio show for WUBE Radio in Cincinnati when it happened. Besides being shocked and saddened like the rest of the nation one of the things I remember the most about that incident was the fact that Billy Joe Royal who many remember for his smash hit “Down In the Boondocks” had a country record out at the time that was climbing the charts headed for the top.
My Program Director and almost every radio programmer in America pulled his new song off the charts and stopped playing it and song never recovered.
The name of that song? “Burned Like A Rocket”.
GOOGLE IT
Google is going to name it the “Gulf of America” on the app. Some of my Parrot Head friends want the name change to be this.
I can support that.
STARBUCKS
Starting yesterday if you order your coffee drink at Starbucks they will pour it in a ceramic mug, glass or personal cup. And if your coffee is poured into one of those…you’ll get a free refill. Of course the one cup of Starbucks will set you back 5 bucks or more these days which leads to the question of, “Who charges more per cup. Star Bucks or Victoria’s Secret?
SUPER BOWL
Sneak peeks of what some consider to be the best Super Bowl commercials we’ll see this year are out. Here’s one starring actor Antonio Banderas for the company Bosch. And I’m going to try to add a new one in each blog right here until the game happens in New Orleans between the Chiefs and Eagles on Sunday February 9.
MAKE IT RAIN
Kid Rock is one of many celebrities that owns a bar on Lower Broadway here in Nashville…a 5 story honkytonk. If you go there…pretty good chance you’ll see him as he hangs there a lot…and often will get up on one of the stages or bars and sing a tune or two.
Last night he was in a really good mood…or he was drinking what he was selling…because he got up and told one of his employees to get him some money and they started tossing large chunks of cash out into the crowd.
So you may want to hit Kid’s place before you walk into Garth, or Blake or Alan’s place because you might catch enough cash to pay for your drinks in the other honkytonks.
VALENTINE
That day is fast approaching. I never know what to get my wife that she might like. She’s picky. Well, not so much when chose me…but I digress.
This year I’m going with this from Krispy Kreme.
She’s a health nut so she’s not likely to take a bite, but she’ll impressed at the thought and then someone else will have to eat her present. I know a guy.
CRUISING
AAA says that 19 million Americans will take a cruise this year. That’s a lot of ice carvings and free buffet lines.
My wife and I have been on 3 or 4 cruises hitting the island stops in the Caribbean or Mexico. But by far the best cruise we’ve ever been on was a Rhine River Cruise. Smaller ships, incredible food, you sit on the top deck and watch castles float by amazing ports of call in Europe. The one cruise I would do over again given the chance.
I could not more highly recommend taking one of those if you can.
HEADLINE OF THE DAY
This one again from the funny folks at Babylon Bee.
“Chiefs Accused of Rigging Games By Playing Better Than The Other Teams.”
TODAY
Tonight actually I’m at the Bluebird Café with Victoria Venier, Steve Dean and my longtime friend and co-writer from Gulf Shores, Alabama Brent Burns. It’s Brent’s very first time after decades playing music to play at the venue EVERY songwriter would like to say they played at least once. Brent has a lot of fans and family coming so I’m truly happy to have helped make a special moment happen for him tonight.
Look for pictures and a full report on tonight’s show here tomorrow.
Have a great Tuesday!
