Friday morning and it’s the last day of January already. Rain in Nashville…adding to the rain we had yesterday with a high of 66 today.
YESTERDAY
I took my friend Brent Burns to the nationally syndicated “Big D & Bubba” show here in Nashville where he sat in and sang a couple of funny tunes. One of those being “Trailer Park Sexy” that the two of us wrote. It gave Brent a chance to mention that he will be the Grand Marshall of the Mardis Gras Parade this year in Gulf Shores where lives. The theme of his float is “Trailer Park Sexy” so my friend will be dressed like “Cousin Eddie” of the Chevy Chase “Christmas Vacation Movie”.
There goes the Gulf Shores neighborhood. He’ll have a bunch of Parrot Head women walking alongside his float with HUGE curlers in their hair…etc. Should be memorable.
For me it was great to see my friend Jonathan Shaffer who is now producing the “Big D & Bubba” show. Jonathan produced my radio show at WSM for several years and then became the Program Director as well. Really good guy and I’m thrilled for his success. Not surprised though.
THE STUDIO
Then it was off to the recording studio with Brent Burns where we gathered with producer Dave Francis and engineer Marv Tuetel and a group of great musicians and recorded 6 musical tracks…all new songs…4 of those being songs Brent and I have co-written over the last year.
A mix of some beach songs and oh yea…some new funny tunes as well.
I’m never ceased to be amazed at how great Nashville musicians are. So talented and we had a great room of them yesterday. There was some serious work…but there was lots of laughter throughout the 4 hour session yesterday. Great fun.
And we’ll be back in the studio today to add some other instruments and Brent will be laying down his vocals on these new songs as well.
BIG CHART ACTION
This was really nice surprise seeing the Kristy Cox song “God Never Made A Mountain” land in the #2 spot on the Bluegrass Today gospel chart! The song written with Josh Shilling and Andrea Pearson just keeps climbing charts and we’re grateful that so many people seem to love this song of hope and inspiration.
NOMINATED ALBUM
Clare Cunningham…Irish…is on her way to LA as her album “On My Way” is nominated for American Album of the Year and the Awards Show takes place in Beverly Hills this evening. I have two songs on this nominated album that I wrote with Clare and my friend Steve Dean, “Look for Jesus” and “Irish Dad” which is all about the advice that Clare’s Irish father gave her while she was growing up in Ireland. So fingers crossed!
If you click on the link you'll hear the song and you'll get to see Clare and her Father who inspired the song.
SONG OF THE DAY
Today I’m choosing “Working Woman's Blues” by Jenny Tolman that I wrote with her and her talented husband Dave Brainard. They wanted to record a female thought on the big hit from Merle Haggard “Working Man Blues.” And THIS is what we came up with. Complete with horns on the recording!

THE DC TRAGEDY
It’s looking like there are no survivors from that horrible crash between an America Airlines plane and a military Blackhawk helicopter. I mentioned yesterday that I could feel how my daughter and son in law must be feeling as Heather worked for American for a few years and Casey my son in law who flies planes for the Army started off flying helicopters. These are my daughter’s thoughts that she posted yesterday.
I’ve been trying to collect my thoughts on what to say regarding the devastating crash that happened between the Army Blackhawk and American regional jet and the bottom line is - sometimes there just aren’t the right words. Even though I left American Airlines shortly after we got married, my time and experience with my fellow crew members made a lasting impact on me and I’ll always consider them my family in the skies. The unusual thing is, I now find myself on the other side of that coin with my husband. Feeling the weight for all crew involved on both sides today, the passengers, and am absolutely shattered for their families. It is a phone call I can’t imagine, and never want to imagine getting. Definitely sending prayers and thoughts to all involved and of course, all my friends and former colleagues at American.
SUPER BOWL AD
You can’t have a Super Bowl without the Clydesdales. Here’s
one of the Budweiser commercials that will air on the Super Bowl this year from
New Orleans featuring the Eagles and Chiefs. Bud has been making great Super Bowl commercials for a long time...and this one certainly does not disappoint.
A PARENTAL TWEET
“73 percent of parenting is hiding from your kids in the other room so you can eat a sleeve of Oreo’s in peace.”
WHO KNEW?
Did you know that the same actor was the voice of both “Miss Piggy” and “Yoda”? Me neither. But now that I think about those two voices I can kind of her the similarity. Frank Oz, and English actor is the man behind those two voices.
HEADLINE OF THE DAY
New Sick Policy Requires 2-Day Notice. (Please schedule getting sick
accordingly.)
TODAY
Back in the recording studio with Brent Burns for part of the day before I put him on a return flight home. A Bluebird Café songwriter show, an appearance on a national radio program, and two days of recording new funny and beach songs. That’s a pretty good run of creative days here in Nashville.
Have a great weekend!
