Friday Night Show...Saturday Irish Music...Dangerous Deer

BILL BLOG

Monday December 9, 2024

Hello Monday morning. It’s going to be quite a bit warmer in Nashville today with a high of 63. No complaints from me.

THE WEEKEND

It was really cold Friday night for my “Hits & Grins” show with Victoria Venier & Steve Dean at the Grand Ole Barn at Starstruck Farms in Lebanon, TN. That held our crowd back a little for our dinner show. But those that made it out were great…and we had a lot of friends in the audience. We mixed in a couple of Christmas tunes and a merry time was had by all.

My thanks to Jay Wilfong who is now the owner of the former Reba McEntire estate for having us a third time to play this wonderful venue. Too much fun was had for sure.

SATURDAY NIGHT IRISH

Saturday night I went and heard some Irish music at a great Irish Pub her in town called McNamara's. You know you're in an Irish Pub when the owner greets you with, "Ya wanna a Guinness"?  Why yes I did.

When my family was in Ireland where we married my daughter, we went to the Guinness Factory and that was the first time I had tried one. Pretty good stuff if you like beer.

The owner of McNamara's is Sean McNamara who is also the leader of a house band called "Nosey Flynn."  And Saturday night Sean invited me to come out and hear a 3 time Irish fiddle champion who was sitting in with the band. So glad I went. There's nothing more contagious than Irish music. Thanks for having me Sean!

SONG OF THE DAY

This is one of my favorite songs that I have helped write and it’s a Christmas song “Snowed In Christmas” that my dear friend Linda Davis recorded several years ago on her family Christmas album.

The two of us with our friend Bobby Tomberlin sat down at my house one summer day to write this idea I had…and it just fell out pretty quickly. Linda sat behind the piano that day and created this beautiful “classic” Christmas melody that you’ll hear when you listen.

Linda and her husband Lang Scott did a Christmas show this past weekend with a full band a couple of hours from Nashville and a former radio friend of mine Marcia Campbell sent me a little video of them singing this song to a great “live” audience. It just reminded me once again how much I love this holiday song. Click the link above to listen.

AND…

We got the Whyte House Christmas tree up this weekend…or I should say my wife mostly got the tree up. The decorating part for sure.

If decorating a tree is art? Then I’m a strictly “paint by number” kind of artist.

HEALTH NOTES

The USDA has ordered nationwide testing for bird flu to halt the virus.

Mushroom extract is showing promising effects against prostate cancer.

In a shocker, the number of men with breast cancer near New York City’s ground zero has skyrocketed to 90 times the national average.

HERE’S YOUR QUOTE

I couldn’t agree more with Fran.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more creative way to celebrate a man’s 80th birthday. Check out this VIDEO of this man’s grandchildren coming up with a touching a extremely clever way to celebrate Grandpa’s big day…all of them dressing up like him and different moments in his 80 year old wife. Pretty sure ALL of these grandkids are in the will now for sure.

BIDET

So I read an article about experts testing for the best bidets. And my first thought was, “They pay people to test bidets”? Now THAT must be an interesting job.

I have to confess…our house has a bidet. But I’m also here to tell you…that nobody has yet tested it.

FUNNY

Jimmy Fallon the “Tonight Show” host ask his viewers to send him reasons why they thought their family was weird.

One replied with, “My grandmother lost her dentures once and spent over 3 hours searching the house for them before remembering that she had put them in her bra.”  Sort of a “Cross Your Teeth” kind of brassiere I guess.

STARBUCKS

The CEO at Starbucks says within 5 years we’ll be able to get our coffee there in 30 minutes or less. That would be nice. And then if they could take orders in a language that made sense to me…that would be great. And that’s how this song “Good Cup of Coffee” came about that I wrote with Steve Dean and Phil Barton.

KEEP YOUR EYES UP GRANNY!

Did you see this VIDEO of a Grandma getting run over by a deer during the Turkey Trot in New York City? Wow. And all I could think of was how proud by Dallas, Texas fan Randy Brooks must be since he’s the writer of “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer”.

 PRICEY SHOES

The ruby red slippers that Dorothy wore in “The Wizard of Oz” just sold at auction for 28 million dollars. It got more than 10 times what they expected. Wonder if the popularity of the movie “Wicked” helped drive up that price? That makes those slippers the most valuable piece of movie memorabilia ever sold.

THEM AND US

Juan Soto signed a contract worth 765 MILLION to play baseball for the New York Mets. It’s a good life when you can get that rich playing a game. Makes you wonder what kind of money a Willie Mayes or Pete Rose or a Mickey Mantle would be worth in today’s market.

MOST DANGEROUS CHRISTMAS SONGS

A new study just listed the most dangerous Christmas songs to listen to while driving. Something to do with “beats per minute” that tend to make one step on the gas too much.

The top 3 offenders are:

Feliz Navidad at 3. All I Want For Christmas Is You is #2.  And the #1 offender believe it or not is “Frosty The Snowman”. Who knew?

And I don’t think insurance covers you driving off the road into a snowbank because you were blasting on “Frosty” through your speakers. Put on some Kenny G Christmas music and you’ll be fine.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Argument Over Anime Ends With Dead Crocodile And Jail For Two Brothers. (I don’t wanna know)

TODAY

This morning I’m online with my talented bluegrass musician-writer-historian Tim Stafford who lives over in Knoxville. Tim and I landed a song recently on the young bluegrass group “Pythagoras” titled “Old Gray Stone”. So today the goal is to try to write another song that someone else might love and record one day.

 Have a great Monday!

A Bluebird Show...New Album In The Mail...An Interview With An Old Friend

BILL BLOG Tuesday November 26, 2024   Tuesday morning…couple days away from carving the turkey. 50 for the high today here in Music City…bracing for some cold weather on the way.   YESTERDAY I had nothing musical on the calendar yesterday…but had one of those “had to do” things that took up a chunk of my day. Sometimes you can’t control a calendar…the calendar controls you and give you no choice. But there was some good news that came rolling in.   NEW SHOW On Tuesday January 28 I’ll be hosting a songwriter round at the world famous Bluebird Café. And the great part about this news is that I’m going to be able to add my longtime friend Brent Burns to this show…something that’s been a bucket list item for him.   And I’m so glad that I’m the one who will get to make this happen for him. EVERY songwriter wants to play the Bluebird. And somehow, even though my friend lived in Nashville and wrote very seriously for a long while, he ne...

Trio of Writers...Post CMA...Alligator Bread

BILL BLOG Friday November 22, 2024   Friday…the weekend be here! Little chillier going into the weekend with a high of just 49 today and the low tonight will dip down to 37.   YESTERDAY I rhymed with two friends yesterday Rick Lang and Kristy Cox . Though I have written with both many times, and each of them have recorded songs I’ve written with them, it was the first time the three of us sat down together. And yesterday we wrote a gospel song idea that Rick brought with him…pretty much an entire chorus.      I was able to share with Rick that I heard one of our songs “ Church Bells A Ringin ” that’s on the Blue Collar Gospel Album-Songs of Rick Lang on Sirius-XM on the way to our appointment sung by Danny Paisley and a group of great harmony singers. That was pretty cool.     And we got to celebrate with Kristy for her album “Let It Burn” that’s up for a couple of big Golden Guitar Awards this year including Best Albu...

A Duo Write...Wienermobile Applications...Love Tom

BILL BLOG Thursday December 19, 2024   Thursday morning has arrived and after some heavy rain here in Nashville yesterday it will cool off to a high of just 45 today.   YESTERDAY I had such a fun write with 2/3rds of the “ Three Times A Lady ” trio.   That would be Victoria Camp and a pregnant Kennedy Scott . Kennedy is due about the first of May of next year…and her baby bump is growing. She and the trio will be playing several weeks in a row at Dollywood come next March…so that will be an interesting challenge for her for sure.   And it was Kennedy who brought in a very cool idea that we wrote together after Victoria came up with an almost “swampy” kind of melody to fit under the lyrics. Got a pretty good feeling this one will be on their next album. Yep, a good day.   SONG OF THE DAY I’ve posted this song before but it seems appropriate to make it today’s song of the day after talking about the “Three Times A Lady”. ...
