Parrot Head Central...Upcoming Shows....Halloween

BILL BLOG

Monday October 28, 2024

Monday morning and I’m back home in Nashville from Gulf Shores with an 80 degree sunny high today on tap. It’s almost as if I never left the beach.

THE WEEKEND

Friday was my last day at this year’s “Meeting of the Minds” with all the Parrot Heads.

I had a noon time show on the big stage at the Hangout with my friend Kelly McGuire and his great band in front of a big crowd of Parrot Heads. He had a couple of my co-writers get up before me…Jessie Ritter being one of those who sang a couple of our co-writes which was very cool. Including the song “My Favorite Color”.

And then this year’s Female Vocalist of the Year Aubrey Wollett was on stage with the band…and we are frequent co-writers as well. It was great seeing both of them play.

I had so much fun…and Kelly’s musicians are so talented. I closed with “My Wife’sGonna Leave You” which had a couple of Parrot Heads running to get to me before I left for my second gig…both of them wanting THAT funny song. I had a couple of CD’s in my bag and quickly sold them before flying by the great Mac McAnally who was doing sound check with Jimmy Buffett’s Band the “Coral Reefers” who had a huge show there Friday night doing all those great Jimmy songs as only Mac and the Reefers can do.

LULU’S

Then I was on stage with Brent Burns at Lulu’s.

We had a raucous, stupid, funny 40 minutes or more together as we always do on stage before the Entertainer of the Year “Sunny Jim White” took the stage with Brent. And then the Male Vocalist of the Year Mike Nash joined in.

Just a great way to spend a beautiful sunny day in Gulf Shores…making music with talented friends.

Heck, I even got to hang for a bit with danged Parrot! Hard to believe it’s the last week of October.

FRIDAY EVENING

I was on the couch at Brent’s place and we got into Game 1 of the World Series between the Dodgers-Yankees. GREAT game one. I watched 9 innings but went to be with the score tied because I had to get up early to get home. So I missed the incredible FREDDY FREEMAN hitting a Grand Slam to win the game! Sigh.

SATURDAY MORNING

And then I was up at dark for the 7 hour trip home to Nashville. What a great few days in Gulf Shores with so many nice folks. I’m already looking forward to next year.

Up next will be the Frank Brown Songwriters Festival back down in Gulf Shores November 8-11. I’m part of 5 shows during the festival this year.

SPEAKING OF FREEDOM SINGS USA
It’s shaping up to be a busy 2025 for the organization that takes songwriters out to write with veterans. We will be returning to Marion and Heyworth and Shiloh, Illinois on separate retreats.

New towns and cities on the schedule include Huntsville, Alabama a couple of times next year, Mountain View, Arkansas, Chickamauga, Georgia and a potential return to Montrose Colorado, and a possible 4-day retreat in Houston.

More details on all of these dates are coming and will be posted in the Tour Section of my website as they become available. But I’m looking forward to spending more time with more veterans in 2025 for sure.

SONG OF THE DAY

Today I’m selecting “Blue Ain’t Just A Color” by Kristy Cox that I wrote by myself. It’s not often you get a cut that you wrote solo so that makes this recording a little special. And it’s one that Kristy performs in most of her shows. I didn’t know it at the time, but blue is Kristy’s favorite color and she loves the word “blue” and that word shows up in more than one of her songs. So the song was truly meant for her I think.

Originally the song was written for a guy to sing…so I had to change just a few words to make it work for Kristy. And I’m surely glad I did.

HEALTH NOTES

Boston researchers are saying that getting injured after a fall for older adults could be a warning sign of dementia.

Scientists say you should walk right after you eat if you want to lose weight. It’s the most effective way to reduce both blood sugar and glucose levels. Don’t wait to digest otherwise the excess glucose in your bloodstream will be stored by insulin and may be stored as fat.

Whooping cough cases are on the rise in Oklahoma.

WELL…SHE LOVES HER DOG

HOME SUPPLY

Word is that homes are in short supply. So much so that there are 30 renters for every house that goes on the market right now. Good time to be a landlord I suppose.

BIG SNAKES

Have I ever mentioned how much I hate snakes? Big time. I’m an even bigger hater after reading about a large python that swallowed a 77 pound deer. True.

Have I ever mentioned how much I HATE snakes?!

HALLOWEEN

Some folks are into Halloween. REALLY into Halloween.

Heck, I don’t put up any Halloween decorations. Don’t even have a pumpkin. I’m so disinterested in Halloween that one year I took out a can of Halloween Pumpkin Filling and drew a smile on it and stuck a candle on the top of the can and set it on our front doorstep. Bad…I know.

LADY LUCK

So a carpenter walks out of a Speedway store in North Carolina and finds $20 on the ground. He picks it up, goes back in and buys a $25.00 scratch off ticket using his new found money. He won a MILLION dollars on that ticket!

When you’re lucky…you’re just lucky. He’s going to retire as a carpenter, and when the lotto folks asked him what he was going to do with his winnings he gave a great reply. “We are going straight to Golden Corral and eat everything they’ve got”!

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Investigation Opens After A Kentucky Man Wakes Up Before Organ Donation. (Yikes. That must have been quite the conversation.)

TODAY

Back to writing. Today I’ll be with my young Kentucky American Idol buddy Alex Miller which is always a fun time.

Then tonight I’m going to watch and see if the Yankees can get back into the World Series after going down 2-0 to the Dodgers out in LA.

Have a great Monday!

Freedom Sings USA Event...A Gold Star Mom...An Old Friend Surprise

BILL BLOG Monday September 9, 2024 Monday morning and I’m back home in Nashville from Marion, Illinois. Sunshine and a high of 84 today here in Music City.       THE WEEKEND Thursday I made the three hour trip up to Marion, Illinois for our Freedom Sings USA songwriter retreat with songwriters Bobby Tomberlin , Steve Dean , Irene Kelley, and Don Goodman.   Marion is in southern Illinois…beautiful town and the folks who organized the event were so kind and passionate about honoring their veterans. Friday night they had a “meet and greet” in a beautiful old church where we had a great dinner and then played a show for all of those who attended. The Mayor, the organizers and the veterans.   Each songwriter met the veteran they were going to write with that night. This is mine. His name is Art Fager .   More on Art in a second.   FRIDAY Friday morning we gathered in yet another church for early breakfast and then each songwriter sat down wit

Beach Rhymes...Football Kickoff...Freedom Sings USA Trip

BILL BLOG Thursday September 5, 2024   Thursday arises and I have a day of traveling to Marion, Illinois. More on that at the end of today’s Blog. Back up to 90 with sun today.   YESTERDAY I wrote with Darrell Clanton yesterday for the first time. Darrell lives in Lakeland, Florida with his wife and back in the day he was an artist here in Nashville and had a couple of country songs on the charts, and had several folks record his songs.     These days Darrell and his band “Bad Habit” are very active in the Trop Rock genre playing a lot of beach music and beach shows. A couple of years ago Darrell and I played the Jim Parker Songwriter Show in Huntsville, Alabama along with my buddy Brent Burns . And then Darrell and I just played it again a few months ago. Then yesterday I really got to know him and we did write a beach song for him.   We’ll be writing more for sure in the future. And there’s a chance that sometime next year that we’ll do a cruise toget

Funny Song...Music Luncheon...Gladiator

BILL BLOG Friday July 26, 2024   Friday morning…rolling into a late July weekend. 82 for the high in Twang Town today with a little rain in the mix.   YESTERDAY I had a very full Wednesday that started with writing a new funny song with young Ethan Phillips who walked into the writing room and said something in conversation that led us to writing what he said about women being compared to a volcano. We may have had WAY too much fun writing that thought. And it could very well turn out to be a song I put on my set list from time to time when I’m out performing.   LUNCH We finished up in time for me to run down south of Nashville to have lunch with my friends Linda Davis & Lang Scott and our mutual friends Richard & Donna Lynch who run a wonderful venue in Waynesville, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati called the “Keep It Country Farm”.   Linda, Lang and myself did a show for them last year and had the best time. They turned part of their f
