New Grass Song...New Grammy Nomination...Trop Rock Awards

BILL BLOG

Wednesday October 9, 2024

Another Hump Day is in front of us…it’s Wednesday and we’ll have sunshine with a high of 78. Anyone else notice that it’s getting darker sooner?  Hate that!

MILTON

Meanwhile, not a lot of sunshine coming to Florida. Hurricane Milton is looking flat out scary at a category 5. And now some of the experts are saying because of the power of this storm they may need to establish a category 6. Imagine that. This shot from space of Milton is indicative of the power and the surge that looks unstoppable right now.

Millions are trying to get out before it hits now clogging the roads. One storm chaser is calling it a once-in-a-lifetime beast.

I’m certainly thinking of my friends and family in Florida this morning and hoping they stay safe.

YESTERDAY

I wrote a new bluegrass song with my with my Pennsylvania buddy Troy Engle online. Something fun and up-tempo. Troy is such a great bluegrass musician and he always makes anything I bring to the writing table better with his skill set. And he did that again yesterday as well.

Troy’s latest album “Back Home” that has 3 of our co-writes on it, including this TITLE TRACK continues got get airplay and recognition which is a good thing. Something good always happens when I get to write with Troy.

 MORE GRAMMY NEWS

I got some more great news yesterday that Darin & Brooke Aldridge’s album “Talk of the Town” is on the first ballot from Grammy consideration as well as the “Blue Collar Gospel” album that I mentioned yesterday here on the blog. I have 2 songs I helped write on the “Blue Collar” project AND two songs on this Darin and Brooke album. Here’s hoping that one of these two projects might make it to the final ballot.

TROP ROCK AWARDS

I also found out that I’ll be presenting an award this year at the Trop Rock Music Awards Show in Gulf Shores Wednesday night October 23 at the Hangout Main Stage. Pleased to do so. The awards show helps kick off the largest gathering of Parrot Head fans, musicians, singers and songwriters with a week full of concerts and more. I’ll be there Wednesday through Saturday this year with a couple of shows I’ll be part of where I’ll be singing. Looking forward to being part of the tropical fun again this year.

SONG OF THE DAY

Today I’m selecting a funny song that I wrote with Gerald Smith “The Georgia Quacker” that’s titled “To The Grave”. Gerald wrote hits for George Jones, Lori Morgan, Colin Raye and many others. And…he wrote that funny song with me. Gerald has a great sense of humor…and he was on Hee Haw for several years as the voice of the duck that walked across the TV screen. And he also sang some in the gospel choir on that TV show.

Some things should be taken to the grave. Click on the link to hear what we chose when we wrote this funny song.

HEALTH NOTES

And now we have snake yoga. For real. Just when you thought goat yoga was odd. The California studio says it keeps one healthy while helping one overcome their fear of snakes…and fear of yoga pants too…I would suppose.  I won’t taking my little mat to this class. Nope.

A study suggests that hiking is not only good for your body but it’s good for one’s mind as well. It does get pretty peaceful when you’re out on a hiking trail like the one that took me to the top of rock in Sedona once.

A nutrition expert says that eating raisins every day will give you clear and glowing skin. (I’m trying to figure out if I really want my skin to “glow” or not)

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Just remember you have to be 65 or older.

FAST TRIP

This new hypersonic jet that’s being built and developed could be on the market in a few years.

And when it’s ready to fly one will be able to fly from NYC to London in just one hour! Heck, there won’t even be enough time to put your seat tray down.

MORE FLORIDA

One of the residuals with all the hurricanes is that insurance rates are going through the roof. Some homeowners may not be able to get insured. The housing market is showing signs of taking a hit. Over half the homes in the Tampa area have dropped in price…and they’re not moving nearly as rapidly even at discounted prices.  Insurance rates there have jumped 400% in recent years.

So one might be able to get a good deal or a better deal on a house in the Sunshine State now, but the insurance costs may prevent a lot of folks from buying. And certainly more buyers may be looking inland instead of on the coast lines.

ROCKY RACCOON

A woman in the Seattle area started feeding raccoons over 30 years ago. The other day she looked out and saw this.

Over 100 of the bandits showed up. Apparently they show up to eat, and won’t leave until they’re fed. And apparently some of the raccoons spread the word to others. There’s a reason why wildlife folks say, “don’t feed the animals.”

STEVEN WRIGHT SAID…

“I had a friend who was a clown. Then he died, all his friends went to his funeral in one car.”

TODAY

Nothing really big on the calendar. I have one of those “got to do things” to take care of but that’s it. I’ll be in front of some of the baseball playoff games if you need me.

Have a great Wednesday!

Freedom Sings USA Event...A Gold Star Mom...An Old Friend Surprise

BILL BLOG Monday September 9, 2024 Monday morning and I’m back home in Nashville from Marion, Illinois. Sunshine and a high of 84 today here in Music City.       THE WEEKEND Thursday I made the three hour trip up to Marion, Illinois for our Freedom Sings USA songwriter retreat with songwriters Bobby Tomberlin , Steve Dean , Irene Kelley, and Don Goodman.   Marion is in southern Illinois…beautiful town and the folks who organized the event were so kind and passionate about honoring their veterans. Friday night they had a “meet and greet” in a beautiful old church where we had a great dinner and then played a show for all of those who attended. The Mayor, the organizers and the veterans.   Each songwriter met the veteran they were going to write with that night. This is mine. His name is Art Fager .   More on Art in a second.   FRIDAY Friday morning we gathered in yet another church for early breakfast and then each songwriter sat down wit

Beach Rhymes...Football Kickoff...Freedom Sings USA Trip

BILL BLOG Thursday September 5, 2024   Thursday arises and I have a day of traveling to Marion, Illinois. More on that at the end of today’s Blog. Back up to 90 with sun today.   YESTERDAY I wrote with Darrell Clanton yesterday for the first time. Darrell lives in Lakeland, Florida with his wife and back in the day he was an artist here in Nashville and had a couple of country songs on the charts, and had several folks record his songs.     These days Darrell and his band “Bad Habit” are very active in the Trop Rock genre playing a lot of beach music and beach shows. A couple of years ago Darrell and I played the Jim Parker Songwriter Show in Huntsville, Alabama along with my buddy Brent Burns . And then Darrell and I just played it again a few months ago. Then yesterday I really got to know him and we did write a beach song for him.   We’ll be writing more for sure in the future. And there’s a chance that sometime next year that we’ll do a cruise toget

Funny Song...Music Luncheon...Gladiator

BILL BLOG Friday July 26, 2024   Friday morning…rolling into a late July weekend. 82 for the high in Twang Town today with a little rain in the mix.   YESTERDAY I had a very full Wednesday that started with writing a new funny song with young Ethan Phillips who walked into the writing room and said something in conversation that led us to writing what he said about women being compared to a volcano. We may have had WAY too much fun writing that thought. And it could very well turn out to be a song I put on my set list from time to time when I’m out performing.   LUNCH We finished up in time for me to run down south of Nashville to have lunch with my friends Linda Davis & Lang Scott and our mutual friends Richard & Donna Lynch who run a wonderful venue in Waynesville, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati called the “Keep It Country Farm”.   Linda, Lang and myself did a show for them last year and had the best time. They turned part of their f
