Jimmy Buffett Tribute...Trop Rock Awards...Trailer Park Sexy

BILL BLOG

Thursday October 24, 2024

Hello from Gulf Shores, Alabama this Thursday morning. 82 today with nothing but Gulf Coast sun. Beautiful down here as always.

YESTERDAY

I got up at the crack of dark and made my way to the Gulf of Mexico for MOTM…the Meeting of the Minds. There are Parrot Heads gathered from all over the country to celebrate Trop Rock Music.

First stop was Lulu’s where my longtime friend Brent Burns is holding court all week bringing songwriter and entertainers up on stage to join him. I’ll be doing that on Friday at about 1:30 pm.

It was great seeing a bunch of friends in the house including a couple that went on the Rhine River Cruise with me and Brent and my wife Kathy a few years ago with a ship full of Parrot Heads I’ve gotten to know through the years from my trips down here.

GRAND MARSHALL
Pretty cool thing happened while I was at Lulu’s. Lulu…Jimmy Buffet’s sister Lulu who owns the place came in and surprised Brent by telling him that he would be the Grand Marshall this year for the Pardis Gras Parade in Gulf Shores. And look at the T-shirt she was wearing.

“Trailer Park Sexy”…a song Brent and I wrote that we both recorded. More on that in a second.

All hail the King.

LAST NIGHT

Yesterday and last night it was a sea of Jimmy Buffett fans at the Hangout which sits right on the ocean.

The held a Jimmy Buffett tribute last night where a ton of Trop Rock singers, including Brent, got up and sang a Buffett song with a GREAT band. It was truly like Jimmy was there with people singing along to those classic Buffett tunes we all know. So much fun.

That was followed by the Trop Rock Awards Show where I presented a couple of trophies. One or radio station of the year that went to Radio Trop Rock and my friends Eric & Gina Babin. And a second one for Duo-Trio of the year that went to the Jonas Lawrence Band.

And congratulations to my friend Sunny Jim who was named “Entertainer of the Year” last night.

Thank you to the TRMA for inviting me to be part of the festivities.

THE HANG

One of the great things about a big event like this on the beach is getting to visit with so many talented singers and writers in this genre. These guys and girls make a living singing on different beaches all around the world and to Trop Rock music lovers everywhere. Last night one of those artists Mike Nash talked to me and Brent Burns about possibly doing an event together that he hosts in Belize every year where he and his wife own a condo. Yes!  Please. Just a conversation for now…but stay tuned.

SONG OF THE DAY

Well, since Lulu Buffett wore our “Trailer Park Sexy” shirt yesterday, let me share that song today. One of the early songs we wrote together. I was in Cincinnati at the time on the radio when Brent called and gave me that title. I loved it immediately and went right to my computer and wrote a bunch of it. I shared it with Brent on the phone, he loved it, and it’s become a favorite for both of us…and apparently Lulu Buffett as well. This is Brent's VERSION of the song.

HEALTH NOTES

McDonald’s has pulled quarter pounders from 20% of their stores in the US after a deadly E.coli outbreak.

Washington state officials have identified four new cases of bird flu, as the H5N1 outbreak has spread.

A new study concludes that walking in short bursts or climbing stairs can burn 20 to 60% more energy than sustained activity for the same distance.

A COMEDIAN’S MIND

Henry Cho is now a member of the Grand Ole Opry. He’s been funny for a long time. And this quote from him tells you how creative minds tend to work.

My wife gets made because we’ll be in the middle of something and I’ll stop and say, ‘No, I’ve got to write this down’. She’ll say, ‘No! We’re in a discussion’!  I say, ‘I know, but it’s hilarious!

DOG CROCS

A few days ago I posted about Dog Crocs. Yep…it’s a thing.

Shows you how little I know. I just could not imagine a lot of people putting these on ole faithful Fido. But they SOLD OUT in the first day they were offered. Look for a few to show up at your Trick or Treat door this year.

CLEAN LAWNS AGAIN!

Just 12 days until the election. That means these will soon be gone from the landscape. Will anyone miss seeing these?

It should be a productive day for those with wood chippers.

GREAT QUOTE

Ted Danson said this to his “Cheers” co-star Kelsey Grammer on his 40th birthday. “You know what 40 means don’t you? Now that you’re 40, it means you’re finally worth having a conversation with.”

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Man Arrested For Illegally Entering Switzerland To Protest People Illegally Entering Switzerland. (I could make a smart comment here…but considering the country?  I think I’ll remain neutral)

TODAY

I’m going to enjoy being on the beach and I’ll be out and about hearing some of my friends playing Trop Rock music. Tomorrow I’ll be doing that with a noon show at the Hangout with Kelly McGuire, and then a 1:30 pm show with Brent Burns at Lulu’s.

Have a great Thursday!

Freedom Sings USA Event...A Gold Star Mom...An Old Friend Surprise

BILL BLOG Monday September 9, 2024 Monday morning and I’m back home in Nashville from Marion, Illinois. Sunshine and a high of 84 today here in Music City.       THE WEEKEND Thursday I made the three hour trip up to Marion, Illinois for our Freedom Sings USA songwriter retreat with songwriters Bobby Tomberlin , Steve Dean , Irene Kelley, and Don Goodman.   Marion is in southern Illinois…beautiful town and the folks who organized the event were so kind and passionate about honoring their veterans. Friday night they had a “meet and greet” in a beautiful old church where we had a great dinner and then played a show for all of those who attended. The Mayor, the organizers and the veterans.   Each songwriter met the veteran they were going to write with that night. This is mine. His name is Art Fager .   More on Art in a second.   FRIDAY Friday morning we gathered in yet another church for early breakfast and then each songwriter sat down wit

Beach Rhymes...Football Kickoff...Freedom Sings USA Trip

BILL BLOG Thursday September 5, 2024   Thursday arises and I have a day of traveling to Marion, Illinois. More on that at the end of today’s Blog. Back up to 90 with sun today.   YESTERDAY I wrote with Darrell Clanton yesterday for the first time. Darrell lives in Lakeland, Florida with his wife and back in the day he was an artist here in Nashville and had a couple of country songs on the charts, and had several folks record his songs.     These days Darrell and his band “Bad Habit” are very active in the Trop Rock genre playing a lot of beach music and beach shows. A couple of years ago Darrell and I played the Jim Parker Songwriter Show in Huntsville, Alabama along with my buddy Brent Burns . And then Darrell and I just played it again a few months ago. Then yesterday I really got to know him and we did write a beach song for him.   We’ll be writing more for sure in the future. And there’s a chance that sometime next year that we’ll do a cruise toget

Funny Song...Music Luncheon...Gladiator

BILL BLOG Friday July 26, 2024   Friday morning…rolling into a late July weekend. 82 for the high in Twang Town today with a little rain in the mix.   YESTERDAY I had a very full Wednesday that started with writing a new funny song with young Ethan Phillips who walked into the writing room and said something in conversation that led us to writing what he said about women being compared to a volcano. We may have had WAY too much fun writing that thought. And it could very well turn out to be a song I put on my set list from time to time when I’m out performing.   LUNCH We finished up in time for me to run down south of Nashville to have lunch with my friends Linda Davis & Lang Scott and our mutual friends Richard & Donna Lynch who run a wonderful venue in Waynesville, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati called the “Keep It Country Farm”.   Linda, Lang and myself did a show for them last year and had the best time. They turned part of their f
