Good Music News...Norm!...Wiener Racing

BILL BLOG

Wednesday May 21, 2025

Wednesday morning in Nashville. I’ll bet it’s Wednesday wherever you are today as well. Just a wild guess.

We had another one of those “weather” days yesterday. Tornado watches and warnings, severe thunderstorms, limbs down, flooding, heavy rain, school closings…you name it. I can’t remember having a stretch of storms like we’ve had. It’s nice to see the forecast calling for a high of 81 today with sunshine. Normal returns…at least for today.

YESTERDAY

I sat and rhymed with a couple of talented folks, Lauren Mascitti and Caroline Owens. I had forgotten that the last time this trio had gotten together that we had started a new song from an idea Lauren had. So, we pulled that back up and finished it yesterday. One of those “he done me wrong” songs. FYI, there’s a LOT of those kinds of songs in country music.

It was a clever idea from Lauren, and I’m glad the girls invited me to write it with them. A fun time was had by all.

 MUSIC NEWS

I got a batch of good music news yesterday. Caroline Owens told me that her next single will be a song that I wrote with Andrea Pearson titled “Telluride,” an up-tempo bluegrass song that Caroline just slayed in the studio. Can’t wait for folks to hear this.

Katrina Burgoyne, a former Aussie, sent me a copy of “American Dream,” that the two of us wrote, that she will be releasing as a single in just a few weeks. Out by the 4th of July holiday weekend which will be appropriate because of the title. Here’s a little TEASE of that song.

I had lunch with Alex Miller after my writing session yesterday and he told me I was wrong about the duet hit he’s had out with Emily Ann Roberts, “More Country Than You”. I had mentioned here and on my socials that the song had over a million streams. It’s over TWELVE million streams. Wow. That made the Mexican dinner we were having taste even better. And it looks like his new album, out next year, will be named after this song, AND his tour is titled the “More Country Than You” tour.

I’m certainly grateful for so much good news all at once yesterday.

SONG OF THE DAY

Today’s song is a crowd favorite that I wrote with Wood Newton, the writer of hits like “Bobby Sue” for the Oak Ridge Boys, “Riding With Private Malone” for David Ball, and “Twenty Years Ago” for Kenny Rogers, just to name a few.

I shared a title at lunch with Wood one afternoon years ago, and he told me not to share it with anyone as he wanted to be a writer on “If You’re Not Careful, My Wife’s GonnaLeave You”. Wood recorded the song as did I and it gets big laughs anytime either of us sing it.

 HEALTH NOTES

The CDC listed the most sleep-deprived cities in the US. The top 5 in reverse order are Cincinnati, Toledo, Detroit, New Orleans. And the most sleep-deprived is Norfolk, Virginia.

The FDA may limit the COVID-10 vaccines, which may restrict shots to older Americans and those at higher risk of serious infection.

A new study is revealing that brain cancer patients taking gabapentin live longer than those who are not taking it.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Always good to have choices.

NORM!

Man, I was sad to see that actor George Wendt passed at the age of 76. One of my all-time TV show characters was his “Norm”! on the TV series “Cheers”.

And I also loved his recurring role in “Da Bears” from Saturday Night Live.

Some of his lines walking into the Cheers Bar are just classic. “It’s a dog-eat-dog world and I’m wearing Milkbone underwear.”

Thank you for making us laugh Mr. Wendt.

HOT DOG RACE

Now this is weird, but kind of cool. Six Wienermobiles are going to race in Indy as part of the Indianapolis 500 race this Memorial Day weekend.

You can’t make this kind of stuff up. Six Wienermobiles from six different regions. That means a wiener could be drafting behind a wiener!

This race happens on “Carb Day,” which is this Friday in Indianapolis.

I’ve worked a couple of Indy 500s for WFMS Radio in Indianapolis when I worked there. I stood next to the now late Jim Nabors (Gomer Pyle) on stage on Carb Day. Really nice man. And for years he of course would sing the iconic song “Back Home In Indiana”.

But I never once got to watch a wiener race!

FYI

This year the Indy 500 is completely sold out. Over 350,000 will be there to watch the race.

SEMICOLON

A new study says there’s been a steady decline in the use of semicolons over the last two decades. I’m one to blame as I have no idea where a danged semicolon goes in a sentence. As much as I write…you would think maybe I would. But now. I’m always guessing where punctuation goes. Dangling participles? Still have no idea. Quotations, commas, dots and dashes all confuse me. Still. And this is why editors are paid for what they do.

CONSPIRACY THEORIES

They continue to abound. I always think if something sounds outrageous…it’s probably not true. But not everyone feels that way. Here are a few that SOME folks do believe to be true.

“Music is the most important thing in the universe, and aliens are mining it from us.”

“Washing machines and dryers cause localized disruptions in space-time through the effects of spinning metal drums in an electromagnetic field (motor) and heat.” (What?)

And this one. “Eminem is a robot”.

I myself have a conspiracy theory that conspiracy theories are not true.

CHEAP

A study claims that 2 out of 3 think frugality is an attractive trait. Using coupons on a date is okay. Who knew?

But then there’s this joke.

After being away on business, Tim thought it would be nice to bring his wife a little gift. “How about some perfume?” he asked the cosmetics clerk. She showed him a $50.00 bottle.

“That’s a bit much,” said Tim, so she returned with a smaller bottle for $30.00. “That’s still quite a bit,” Tim complained.

Growing annoyed, the clerk brought out a tiny $15.00 bottle. “What I mean,” said Tim, “is I’d like to see something really cheap.”

The clerk handed him a mirror.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Tight End Returns After Colon Surgery. (Pretty sure the editor of this newspaper took the day off)

TODAY

A full Wednesday on tap. First, I’m writing with Caroline Owens this morning, along with Andrea Pearson this time. Andrea has been in the recording studio quite a bit lately doing background vocals on recording sessions. One of my favorite voices in town.

This will be the first time the three of us has worked together.

Then, early this afternoon, I’ll be in the recording studio with writers Wil Nance and Irene Kelley to record a new song the three of us wrote. Can’t wait to hear what the musicians do with our song.

Have a great Wednesday!

ACM Awards Show...Frank Brown Songwriters Festival...Mother's Day Weekend

BILL BLOG Friday May 9, 2025  Here we go sneaking into a weekend. It’s Friday. Just 71 for the high today in Nashville.   YESTERDAY My Thursday morning started online writing a new up-tempo bluegrass song with Troy Engle in Pennsylvania. Troy plays every instrument that has strings on it, sings, writes, produces…not much he can’t do musically. When he lived in Nashville, he hung out a lot with Tom T Hall , played on numerous recording sessions, and was out on the road playing some instrument with the likes of Eric Church , The Isaacs and a long list of country stars.   But several years ago, Troy moved back to PA with his family and plays some shows up there with his family band, but still does a lot of recording work from home. He told me yesterday that his daughter may enroll at a University in Nashville next year and that might bring him back to Music City. It would be great to have him here and get to work him in person more.   ...

Storm Weary...Wrestling Church...Gators

BILL BLOG Friday April 4, 2025  Friday morning in soggy Nashville.   YESTERDAY It was another day of storms, tornadoes, and a whole lot of flooding. And it sounds like we could get more and nobody wants that. Folks are storm-weary from the constant flood and tornado warnings that have been lighting up our phones for the past couple of days and nights. Hallways have become bedrooms for some. Schools are still closed today because of the flooding and damage and the weather forecast predicts that we are still not done with this system that just won’t go away. There are now 5 confirmed deaths so far.   Across the region where these storms have been constant the weather service has issued over 300 tornado warnings. There were a lot of big wind-walls like this one that hit near Nashville.   Selmer, Tennessee…also near Nashville was really hit hard.   Our house is on a hill so we don’t worry much about flooding. But I’m going to...

New Song Recorded...Lulu...Book On The Way

BILL BLOG Friday April 25, 2025   Here comes the weekend. It’s Friday once again. A high of 71 today with more rain on the way.   YESTERDAY I wrote with young Taylon Hope for the first time in a long while. Taylon is now a Sophomore at Belmont, University here in Nashville, and she’s chasing her musical dreams. We were to write in person and then one of her professors scheduled a test that would have conflicted so we wrote online instead and created a fun song for her that will be something she can add to her set list when she’s out performing “live”.   I’m rooting for some of her dreams to come true as I am so many other young talents in this crazy creative town.   BURN ME DOWN An American Idol contestant from a year ago, Kennedy Reid reached out to me a few months ago through a producer friers asking for songs for consideration for an album she was going to record. I sent three or 4 songs and ,she recorded one of those that I w...
