Friday April 25, 2025
Here comes the weekend. It’s Friday once again. A high of 71 today with more rain on the way.
YESTERDAY
I wrote with young Taylon Hope for the first time in a long while. Taylon is now a Sophomore at Belmont, University here in Nashville, and she’s chasing her musical dreams. We were to write in person and then one of her professors scheduled a test that would have conflicted so we wrote online instead and created a fun song for her that will be something she can add to her set list when she’s out performing “live”.
I’m rooting for some of her dreams to come true as I am so many other young talents in this crazy creative town.
BURN ME DOWN
An American Idol contestant from a year ago, Kennedy Reid reached out to me a few months ago through a producer friers asking for songs for consideration for an album she was going to record. I sent three or 4 songs and ,she recorded one of those that I wrote with Wil Nance and Lauren Mascitti.
Yesterday I received a copy of it with a note telling me that she and her producer thought it was the best song on the project, something that’s always nice to hear. I’m pretty sure that’s accurate as I found this little TEASE of part of that song on her TikTok account promoting that “new music” was on the way from her. Check it out.
LULU ROMAN
I was sad to see that former Hee Haw star and gospel singer Lulu Roman passed away at the age of 78.
She had quite the life. She was placed in an orphan home when she was young. She was a go-go dancer. She became addicted to drugs which cause herd to be let go at Hee Haw before returning later. She was imprisoned. Her BIO is “movie” kind of stuff.
I was blessed to get to know her a bit when I shared a stage with her in Branson, Missouri a few years ago.
She sang gospel songs and told stories on stage. And I heard more of those stories over lunch with her one day during our three-day run of shows hosted by singer-writer Billy Yates. She made me laugh.
Rest in peace Lulu.
KATHY’S BOOK
My wife got some great news about the first book that she’s ever written from her publisher yesterday. Very soon we’ll be able to announce the title of the book and its tentative release date. I’m biased, but man she wrote a great piece of fiction wrapped around a great story that I think a lot of folks are going to love. It’s been quite the process taking an idea she had and then writing it into this book…and quite the learning process as well. I’m extremely proud of her and we can’t wait to share this with everyone very soon.
NFL DRAFT
I did watch the Tennessee Titans take QB Cam Ward out of Miami at last night’s NFL Draft party that took place up at the “frozen tundra” in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The greatest place to see a football game in my little football opinion. It amazes me that 150,000 or more will stand outside and watch kids be drafted by the NFL.
Some homeowners up in Green Bay charged $160 or more for fans to park on their lawns.
One of those NOT drafted yesterday was Deion’s QB kid Shadeur Sanders. A surprise to some. I think somebody is going to get a steal in the second round of the draft taking place today. We’ll see.
SONG OF THE DAY
Today’s song is a “beachy” tune that I wrote with Jessie Ritter who lives with her husband and two young kids down on the Redneck Riviera in Pensacola, Florida. The song is titled “Take Me There” and this is a “live” recording of Jesse singing our song at the world-famous Flora-Bama Lounge one evening and she had the entire crowd singing along with her. Love that.
HEALTH NOTES
Lab grown teeth could offer an alternative to fillers and implants soon according to those “toothy” experts.
A woman says that ChatGPT saved her life by helping detect cancer, which Doctors missed.
Ivermectin is now going to be sold over the counter soon in these three states. Idaho, Arkansas, and here in Tennessee.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
Yep. Your kids will love you for that!
IT’S HOT!
Scientists in England have won approval to test whether dimming the sun will combat global warming. And they’ve been given 66 million dollars to help test their theory that flying planes high and releasing sulfate particles into the stratosphere, in the low atmosphere can help. The theory is it would prevent some of the sun’s rays from hitting Earth by reflecting those rays towards space.
For now, I’m just turning my AC down a couple of degrees this summer.
FUNNY
Last night Nina Fortune, the wife of Jimmy Fortune who was with the Statler
Brothers for all those years sent me something funny by text.
She found this in the women’s bathroom at the Palace Theater in Corsicana, Texas where Jimmy played last night. Linda Davis, Lang Scott and I played there earlier this year. When they asked us to sign this poster, I had no idea they would hang it in the women’s bathroom. After all these years, I think I’m finally a star!
STARBUCKS
It’s free refills now at Starbucks and they say it’s helping to keep customers in their stores longer. Great. Can I get a free donut refill as well?
OR MAYBE GIVE ME ONE OF THESE?
Uh huh. A chocolate covered pretzel flavored Oreo cookie for a limited time only. There’s got to be a Mac n Cheese flavored Oreo cookie coming soon. Right?
HOOKED ON OUR PHONES
New data claims that we spend 88 days a year on our phones. Gen Z is partly responsible for that. Scrolling, scrolling, texting, TikToking, and more.
There’s going to be openings for Cell Phone rehab centers soon.
DIRTY
The publication House Fresh just released the dirtiest cities in America according to a poll of their readers.
5 Memphis
4 LA
3 Charlotte
2 Sacramento
And the dirtiest city in America according to them is Baltimore.
Nashville came in #12. We’ve got work to do to get into the Top 10 of dirty.
MORE PAIN-LESS INK
Former Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson is removing all of his tattoos. And he has a LOT of them.
So far, he’s spent over $200,000 doing so, and he’s not yet half done. And they hurt when you put them on your skin, and they hurt when you remove them.
File this one under "it seemed like such a good idea at the time".
HEADLINE OF THE DAY
Trick Cigar Blows Man’s Head Off. (I just KNEW that was going to happen one day!)
TODAY
Nothing big today or this weekend. But it’s a lull before a little storm of activity next weekend when I will have 3 shows in a row.
May 1 at the Listening Room Café in Nashville with “Hits & Grins” featuring Steve Dean & Victoria Venier.
May 2 at a private corporate event at the Omni in downtown Nashville where I’ll be writing parody songs with corporate folks that will be turned into line dances that they will sing later that evening. The two songs I’ll be working with that day are “She’s In Love With The Boy” by Trisha Yearwood and “Achy Breaky Heart” by Billy Ray Cyrus.
May 3 at Starstruck Farms in Lebanon, Tennessee with “Hits & Grins” inside the Grand Ole Barn for a 7:30 pm dinner show.
Have a great weekend!
