BILL BLOG
Tuesday March 4, 2025
And a good Tuesday morning to you. We are keeping our eyes open for damaging wind-type weather in middle Tennessee for the next couple of days. 35-50 mph winds are expected here.
The deep south is already getting hit with bad storms, tornado warnings and watches. Several Mardis Gras celebrations have already been postponed. My longtime friend Brent Burns down in Gulf Shores is the Grand Marshall for the Mardis Gras parade scheduled for today in Gulf Shores. I’m pretty sure that will be postponed as well.
It might be a sign from the weather God as the theme of Brent’s float is “Trailer Park Sexy” taken from one of the songs we wrote and both recorded. Brent is to be dressed up like “Cousin Eddie” from Christmas vacation played by actor Randy Quaid.
Like I said, it might be a sign from the weather God’s that nobody needs to see my friend in a parade in a bathrobe. Nobody.
YESTERDAY
My writing session was online yesterday with Tim Stafford over in Knoxville. Tim is a member of the esteemed bluegrass group Blue Highway and they are big enough that they hold their own Bluegrass Festival yearly over in Stone Gap, Virginia with a great lineup of talent every year.
Tim is a terrific guitar player. Early in his career, he toured the country with Alison Krauss so that gives you an idea of how talented Tim is.
Yesterday the two of us wrote a fun grass tune about true love that should put a smile on a few faces if we are lucky enough to get it recorded one day.
SPEAKING OF SONGS GETTING RECORDED
Over the weekend I found out that my friend Kristy Cox, who’s recorded several of my songs through the years texted me that she was in the studio recording an album on her band “Grasstime” that features lead singer Robbie Morris AND that they were recording THREE songs that I’m a writer on. Two with Josh Shilling, and a third one that was co-written with Adam Wheeler & Belinda Smith.
And if that wasn’t good enough news, I also got word that the great bluegrass duo Dailey & Vincent had just cut another one of my songs! This one co-written with Laura Leigh Jones. I’m a big Dailey and Vincent fan and can’t wait to hear what they’ve done with the song. I hear that they killed it.
And then one more song of mine is about to be recorded by Kennedy Reid who some of you may remember as a contestant on American Idol.
Her producer reached out to me looking for songs and one
of those I sent she fell in love with and will be in studio soon recording it. Kudos to my friends Wil Nance and Lauren Mascitti who wrote the song with me.
So thank you to Grasstime, Dailey & Vincent, and Kennedy for loving those songs.
LITTLE MORE COUNTRY
I love this little behind-the-scenes “in the recording studio” footage of Alex Miller & Emily Ann Roberts having fun with the song the three of us wrote “Little More Country Than You.” That song is the current single that’s out right now and this VIDEO captures the chemistry these two have together. Very fun.
SONG OF THE DAY
Today I’m choosing a stone country traditional song “Lessto Break” by Scott Southworth. This is a song the two of us wrote together one day from an idea Scott brought into the writing room that day. Scott had a bit of the song already written so it was pretty easy for me to jump into the middle of it and help him finish it. If you like your Country Music C O U N T R Y…then check out my friend’s tune.
SONGWRITER FESTIVAL
I found out yesterday that the Gatlinburg Songwriters Festival will be held on August 15 and 16 at the historic Gatlinburg Inn I’m happy to be on the roster for that great event after having to miss it last year.
HEALTH NOTES
A measles case in Pennsylvania led to a warning for JFK Airport travelers after an unvaccinated child contracted the virus. The child is from China.
Meanwhile, RFK Jr is urging people to get vaccinated amid the deadly Texas outbreak.
A poll reveals that women say 40 is the age they’re most motivated to get answers to their health-related inquiries.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
That would be a pretty good trick.
BUS TICKETS
In light of all the bad Airline news comes word that bus travel is showing steady growth. Some people would rather ride a bus than jump on board a plane right now.
I’m not fearful of flying. But if given a choice, I’d rather drive. If the drive time gets over 8 hours or so then I’m more willing to deal with the hassle of airports and flying.
JUST A LITTLE REDNECK
In St.Augustine, Florida they hold the Florida Man Games at the Fairground. The second annual event will feature the “Evading Arrest Obstacle Course”. There will be “Beer Belly Sumo Wrestling”. And “Human Beer Pong” and “Grocery Aisle Brawl” are also official events.
I think you have to bring your own shopping cart to compete in the “Grocery Aisle Brawl.” Good luck.
PRETTY GREAT MARRIAGE
Dolly Parton lost her husband Carl Dean yesterday after almost 60 years of marriage. They met when Dolly was coming out of a laundromat here in Nashville named “The Wishy Washy”. (You can’t make names like that up)
Carl struck up a conversation with her outside the laundromat and that was it. He was notoriously private and that worked for the two of them.
When asked what made their marriage work Dolly says, “He’s quiet and I’m loud, and we’re funny”. She claims that having a sense of humor and being funny kept them together. Not bad marriage advice for anyone.
HEADLINE OF THE DAY
New Sick Policy Requires A 2-Day Notice. (No telling which pharmaceutical company this refers to)
TODAY
I’m off to write with Lauren Mascitti and Caroline Owens this morning. Two really talented girl singers. The first time the three of us have gathered together though I’ve written with Lauren many times.
And Caroline is a young bluegrass artist on Billy Blue Records who’s being nominated for “Female Vocalist of the Year” at some of the award shows. She’s getting ready to release her first record for the label soon and I’m pleased to have a song on the album for sure.
Should be a fun rhyming morning with those two.
Have a great Tuesday!
