Friday March 28, 2025
Friday morning and it’s the last weekend of March is on us. Time flies. 78 and sunny in Nashville today. Our lawn got mowed for the first time this year yesterday so it really is Spring now.
YESTERDAY
I had the pleasure of writing for the first time with Daryl Mosley, who happens to be the International Bluegrass Music Association “Songwriter of the Year” 4 different years. Nope…I’m not jealous.
He’s also a great entertainer and travels a lot performing shows at lots of churches and he writes songs that are wholesome and many are faith-based. He’s also an author and sells of lot of inspiring books like this one that he wrote.
And what a nice man. I think we both felt at ease with each other very quickly and finished up an idea for a song I brought with me also very quickly which gave us a chance to get to know each other. And I found out he’s as big a baseball fan as I am! And with yesterday being Opening Day we talked a lot about America’s pastime. I’m pretty sure we’ll be writing lots of songs together in the future.
OPENING DAY
I did get to watch a bit of the Red’s Opening Day game against the Giants yesterday only to watch them give up the lead in the bottom of the 9th to the Giants and lose a game they should have won. Sigh. But man, it’s great to have baseball back again! Stadiums across the country were packed yesterday. And all is well with the world.
THE OPRY
Then last night my wife and I went to the Grand Ole Opry to cheer on our friend Linda Davis. Thursday night at the Grand Ole Opry is “Classic” night meaning that the artists sing some classic country hits.
And it was an all-female lineup last night at the Opry featuring Lori Morgan, Mandy Barnett, Linda, and others. Linda gave a master class I thought in stage performance singing the Dottie Rambo song “Sheltered in The Arms of God.” Goosebump stuff. She sang part of the song with the host of the show on Thursday nights Larry Gatlin.
There were lot of friends wandering around backstage as well including my friend and hit songwriter Bobby Tomberlin. Do we look excited or what?
And we had a chance to meet Nancy Jones who was married to George Jones and was truly instrumental in straightening the “Possum” out. She and I laughed a bit about how she would call me when I was on the radio. She would then tell George (who was riding in the car) who he was about to talk to on the radio.
My thanks to Linda and her husband Lang Scott for including us on their guest list last night. Always a treat.
SONG OF THE DAY
I’ll share another song from Brent Burns today “Get Off My Beach.” Spring Break has broken out at beaches everywhere and in Gulf Shores where Brent lives. He’s not a fan and you will hear him raise his voice in anger in this tune we wrote. Pretty funny if I do say so. Click on the link and listen.
And this piece of trivia. My friend Lang Scott who I tour with along with Linda Davis was in studio the day we recorded this and you’ll hear him yelling with me and a couple of other guys in this funny song.
HEALTH NOTES
Some leading dietitians say that bone broth is a great choice for optimizing post-workout recovery. (I went to the gym yesterday and then ate some mac n cheese. I don’t think it optimized much)
A professor of Neurology claims that looking at flowers can relieve your stress and even lower your blood pressure putting you in a better mood.
And some doctors will suggest Art Therapy where they tell you to go to a museum and stare at some art to help you relax. (Wonder if I can get a prescription to go see that duct-taped banana?)
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
I don’t want to make a pig sick so I’ll try to avoid climbing the fence. Y’all do what you want.
NO HUMANS
Bill Gates said in an interview that he believes AI will replace Doctors and Teachers within 10 years. And that someday humans won’t be needed for much of anything. Wow. I see self-check-in and check out for gallbladder removal soon.
SPEAKING OF AI
Nashville now has a company in town training self-driving taxis. Pretty soon
those who have had too much to drink on Lower Broadway in the honkytonks will
be able to have a designated non-driver to get them home safely. I can’t wait
for self-flying planes.
GRADUATION SPEECH
Does anyone remember their graduation speaker? I know I don’t. I was selected to give the Senior speech at my graduation at Elsberry High in Missouri. And I’m pretty sure that’s why I saw some of my fellow graduates snoring in their seats.
However, if I were watching and listening to Kermit the Frog give the commencement speech I’d be pretty attentive. And that’s what’s going to happen at Maryland University this May 21. Jim Henson, the laet brilliant Muppets creator is an alumnus there and Kermit will have those honors this year.
Wonder if they’re selling tickets for that?
HEADLINE OF THE DAY
Survey Finds Fewer Deer After Hunt. (I can’t imagine why)
TODAY
I’m writing today with Stuie French the father of the talented French Family Band that also features his son and wife. So good. Last time we wrote a Western Swing song together that their band is performing regularly. I keep hearing they are going to record that song and tomorrow I’ll be able to find out for sure.
THE WEEKEND
Baseball and March Madness. I’ve already made a reservation for part of my couch.
Have a great weekend!
