Crockett Texas...Flying...Jay Leno Moment

BILL BLOG

Friday March 7, 2025

Friday morning and I’m in Crockett, Texas. It will be mostly sunny with a high of 78 here in east Texas today!

YESTERDAY

It was a long drive from Nashville to Crockett, Texas yesterday. We left around 7:15 AM and got into our hotel room last night around 7:15 pm. I was in great company though with Linda Davis and Lang Scott. We often joke that the REAL shows take place inside the car. Yesterday was no exception.

We are settled in and ready for our soundcheck at about 4 pm tonight before our “Evening in the Round” show tonight at Bear Hall at 7:30 pm.

SONG OF THE DAY

Today I’m selecting a song by Australian artist TC CassidyLove Hate Love Again”. It’s an up-tempo fun song from an idea I shared with producer-writer Angus Gill who was looking for an up-tempo song for TC. Angus, who lives in the States now, but was in Australia at the time. We wrote it pretty quickly on the computer. He sent it to TC and she loved it and recorded the song then released it as a single in Australia where it did very well. Check it out by hitting the link.

LIVING THE AMERICAN DREAM

Speaking of Aussies…my friend Katrina Burgoyne, who is also from Australia and now lives in the States posted another tease of the song the two of us wrote that she’ll be releasing on a new project coming out later this year. She and her husband bought a little home that they’re constantly working on that sits on a little land just outside of Nashville. It’s Katrina, her husband, and their baby girl. All of that is covered in this fun song we wrote “Living the American Dream.” Check it out.

HEALTH NOTES

A new study says drinking three cups of green tea daily may reduce dementia risk.

A 2nd measles death has been reported. An adult in New Mexico who was unvaccinated passed.

Willie Nelson who is 92 jokingly says that his secret to living a long life may be waffles. Willie admits, “I never met a waffle I didn’t like.”

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

BYOW…Bring your own woman.

SOME KIND OF JET

How about this new passenger jet coming from Delta Airlines?

250 passengers will fit inside. They say it will be quieter than other jets, will have better fuel mileage, and, will be emission-friendly as well. Should be flying by 2027 they say.

MEANWHILE

On a Southwest flight headed to Phoenix a female passenger strips naked and starts walking up and down the aisle. Uh-huh. In-flight entertainment I suppose.

My daughter worked for American Airlines for about 5 years as a flight attendant and she shared some unreal stories about passengers. I’m sure every flight attendant could write a book about really weird things they’ve seen on board.

AND…

Then there’s the Australian teenager dressed up in a security outfit who got on board a plane with a shotgun. Three passengers took him down until police could get there.

It’s been a weird time for flying lately.

TOP COUNTRY SONGS

The publication “Taste of Country” just listed what they think are the top country songs over the last 10 years. They listed the Chris Stapleton song “Tennessee Whiskey” as #1. I have no argument with that. That song penned by Dean Dillon was a huge hit for George Jones first before Chris brought the house down with it during a CMA Awards show moment with Justin Timberlake that was truly an UNFORGETTABLE TV moment that launched Chris from a “barely known” artist to the public…to a superstar.

Several years before this moment I opened a show singing before the group Steeldrivers...a bluegrass group that Chris was part of at the time. Marty Raybon of Shenandoah closed out that show that evening that had a small crowd. After I finished my set, I sat out on the lawn and watched the Steeldrivers. And I remember my mouth dropping open as I listened to Chris sing for the first time. Pretty much all of the country did the same thing later at that CMA Awards moment.

I might have chosen their #4 song “Humble and Kind” by Tim McGraw as my favorite. Lori McKenna masterfully wrote that song. Check out her version HERE.

THEM AND US

It’s no secret that Jay Leno loves cars or almost anything with wheels on it. His garage is now valued at a BILLION dollars. He’s collected 181 cars and 160 motorcycles so far.

I was in Hollywood one time many years ago covering the Academy of Country Music Awards Show. While out driving one day with my radio partner Jay Leno passed us driving a car that looked like this.

We waved…he waved back. And there is my one and only Jay Leno story.

NO!

Cicadas are returning to 13 states this year. Tennessee is one of them. In fact, Tennessee and Kentucky will get the most. Sigh. We had enough of those noisy red-eyed things last year. It sounds different when you walk during a cicada outbreak. Crunch would be the word. The 4th week of April is when they’ll be arriving.

I think I’ll book a vacation and return when things quiet down.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Statistics Show That Teen Pregnancy Drops Off Significantly After Age 25. (You don’t say?)

TODAY

It’s all about getting ready for our Evening in the Round show tonight at Bear Hall here in Crockett, Texas. Looking forward to it.

Then tomorrow night we’ll be in Marshall, Texas for a show where we hear they’ve sold a lot of tickets. So that will be fun as well before we head back home on Sunday.

Don’t forget to set your clocks forward this weekend. I’m looking forward to more hours of daylight!

Have a great weekend!

A Bluebird Show...New Album In The Mail...An Interview With An Old Friend

BILL BLOG Tuesday November 26, 2024   Tuesday morning…couple days away from carving the turkey. 50 for the high today here in Music City…bracing for some cold weather on the way.   YESTERDAY I had nothing musical on the calendar yesterday…but had one of those “had to do” things that took up a chunk of my day. Sometimes you can’t control a calendar…the calendar controls you and give you no choice. But there was some good news that came rolling in.   NEW SHOW On Tuesday January 28 I’ll be hosting a songwriter round at the world famous Bluebird Café. And the great part about this news is that I’m going to be able to add my longtime friend Brent Burns to this show…something that’s been a bucket list item for him.   And I’m so glad that I’m the one who will get to make this happen for him. EVERY songwriter wants to play the Bluebird. And somehow, even though my friend lived in Nashville and wrote very seriously for a long while, he ne...

Quiet New Year...Ray Stevens...A Look Back

BILL BLOG January 1, 2025   Wednesday…bring with it the very first day of a New Year. Time flies don’t it?   YESTERDAY A lazy New Year’s Eve day around the Whyte House. My wife and I called our daughter Heather over in Germany to wish her a Happy Birthday…yep a New Year’s Eve kid. She and her husband Casey were in a theme park in the Netherlands called “Efteling” to celebrate the occasion. The two of them took us there when we were over in Germany last year so in our minds at least…we could picture where they were at. More on the Germany trip at the end of today’s Blog in the “Looking Back” section.   TWEAKING I also spent a little time on the phone with producer-writer-singer Jerry Salley who is recording a song I helped write with my friend Andrea Pearson tweaking some lyrics of that song that young-talented bluegrass artist Caroline Owens is getting ready to record on her next album. Heck of an up-tempo tune and we wanted to make s...

A Duo Write...Wienermobile Applications...Love Tom

BILL BLOG Thursday December 19, 2024   Thursday morning has arrived and after some heavy rain here in Nashville yesterday it will cool off to a high of just 45 today.   YESTERDAY I had such a fun write with 2/3rds of the “ Three Times A Lady ” trio.   That would be Victoria Camp and a pregnant Kennedy Scott . Kennedy is due about the first of May of next year…and her baby bump is growing. She and the trio will be playing several weeks in a row at Dollywood come next March…so that will be an interesting challenge for her for sure.   And it was Kennedy who brought in a very cool idea that we wrote together after Victoria came up with an almost “swampy” kind of melody to fit under the lyrics. Got a pretty good feeling this one will be on their next album. Yep, a good day.   SONG OF THE DAY I’ve posted this song before but it seems appropriate to make it today’s song of the day after talking about the “Three Times A Lady”. ...
