Monday March 24, 2025
Monday morning and I’m back home in Music City. Sunshine and a high of 68 here today after some storms rolled through last night with some large hail in parts of Nashville.
THE WEEKEND
Friday night Linda Davis, Lang Scott, and I had the pleasure of playing on the historic stage at the Rylander Theatre in Americus, Georgia.
It is such a pleasure to play in these restored treasures. This one first opened in the 1800’s and then shut down for years before it was restored and re-opened in the late 90’s. I posted Friday morning about the old organ that is still in the orchestra pit that sat at our feet during our Evening in the Round on my Facebook page. And danged if one of the organ players didn’t reach out to me telling me about how much he loved playing that old instrument in the theatre. He lives in Atlanta, saw the post and ,reached out. Thank you.
We had such a good time Friday night and the show just flew by. Great sound folks, and the staff could not have treated us any nicer.
I have to mention that our backstage meal came from a local restaurant named “The Station”. One of the items on the menu is FRIED mac and cheese! Anyone who knows me knows mac and cheese has always been one of my favorite food items. This was off the hook great! If you’re ever in Americus, Georgia you know what you need to order come dinner time.
The historic Windsor Hotel we stayed at is worth visiting and overnighting at as well.
Old school charm, comfy beds, and a great dining room with more than reasonable prices. I would certainly stay there again.
Thank you so much for choosing us to be part of your Performance Arts Season this past year. And please bring us back!
SATURDAY
We made the trip home to Nashville on a perfect sunny day. And I guess it was the weather that caused multiple LONG delays on both I-65 North and South. We never saw a wreck. We never saw construction. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such long lines on a danged Saturday. When made it to Lang and Linda’s I still had 30 minutes left to get to my house. That 30 minutes turned into over an hour. It seems extra long when you just want to get to the house. But I made it with another great bag of memories.
NEW SHOWS
January through March of this year was busy as I was on the road quite a bit doing shows. But now until the end of May, I’m home a lot. There are a few “local” shows scheduled that you can find in the TOUR section of my calendar. There are a couple of new shows to tell you about both with Linda Davis and Lang Scott.
In the middle of May, we’ll be playing a couple of dinner shows at a local restaurant here in Nashville. We’re just firming up the details. As soon as I have that I’ll let you know when and where in town that is. We don’t get to do a lot of shows in Nashville, so this will be fun.
Friday, November 7 our “Evening in the Round” trio will return to Toccoa, Georgia to play at the historic Ritz Theater there. Looking forward to playing that stage a second time.
And September through November is going to be a really busy time.
So I’m going to take advantage of being home for a couple of months off the road.
A LITTLE VIDEO
Darin and Brooke Aldridge had great success with a song the three of us wrote together “Wildflower Too”. It got a lot of airplay on bluegrass radio stations. Over the weekend they posted this nice VIDEO.
SONG OF THE DAY
How about a fun beach song today? This one is from my beach buddy Brent Burns’s “Stuff Like That”. I had that title thinking we’d write about things we like, especially be-ch related things. The musicians made this one really catchy.
HEALTH NOTES
Researchers are warning that men who regularly dodge prostate cancer screening appointments are 45% more likely to die from that disease.
A North Carolina mother and son can sue a public school and a doctor’s group on allegations that they gave the boy a COVID-19 vaccine without consent.
A medical report says that more than 3 billion people had some type of oral disease in 2021.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
Some solid redneck reasoning there.
MARCH MADNESS
I did catch quite a bit of basketball over the weekend.
The Sweet 16 will include 7 teams from the SEC showing that our conference is
more than just great football teams. Tennessee made it so I have one team left
that I can root for. The games start this Thursday. As far as my bracket goes?
PLAY BALL!
And it’s Opening Day week for Major League Baseball. For my Reds that will be this Thursday when they play the Giants in Cincinnati which has one of the greatest opening-day celebrations of any team. There’s a huge parade every year that I’ve had the pleasure of being in a few times when I worked in radio up in the Queen City.
And pretty much everyone takes off work to go see the
parade filled with ex-Reds players and celebrities and then if they’re lucky
the game itself at Great American Ballpark.
BALLPARK FOOD
A new tradition this year for some Major League baseball parks will be having food items that are favorites and familiar to the visiting team and their fans. I like that idea. If the Cubs visit Cincinnati I might be able to grab a slice of their deep dish pizza. Or, if I visit Wrigley Field when my Reds are there maybe I can order a Skyline 3-way!
I like it!
WHO NEEDS A DRIVER?
You’ll be able to catch a Lyft Robo Taxi in Atlanta come this Fall. No driver. Just jump in and cross your fingers.
Makes me wonder who backseat drivers are going to talk to.
SPEAKING OF DRIVING
Tesla has recalled 46,000 of those Cyber Trucks over a glue issue. Glue is holding that thing together? I saw one on the road this past weekend while traveling to Georgia. I think it might be the one vehicle I’ve seen that I think is uglier than those old AMC Pacers. But that’s just me. Or maybe not.
TIMES ARE A CHANGING
There are now more charging stations in California than there are gas pumps. More and more EVs are being sold. Even Rolls Royce is developing an electric version of their expensive car. It will cost over $422,000. But on the bright side, look how much you’ll save on gas!
SELF CHECKOUT
Experts say that self-checkout is not faster than going through the line using a real person to check you out. But most believe it is. And 67% of customers say they have experienced some kind of failure at the self-checkout machine.
It seems faster to me when I’m at the grocery store. But then again, I’ll take a detour if there’s a traffic jam simply because I’d rather be moving than sitting and waiting like you have to do some time in the grocery store check-out line. I’m thinking it might be related.
One lady using self-check-out tweeted this. “I’m always cool and confident until I’m paying for fruit at the self-checkout”.
SNICKERS COFFIN
Paul Broome from England passed away at the age of just 55. He apparently had quite the sense of humor as he asked to be buried in a Snickers candy bar coffin when he passed. His family obliged.
Hard not to smile at that. And isn’t their commercial line, “Wanna get away somewhere?” Paul Broome just did that in very unique way.
HEADLINE OF THE DAY
Corpse Spoil Wake Refusing To Stay Dead. (Wonder if it was the guy in the Snicker's coffin?)
TODAY
Back to the songwriting table today. This morning I’m with Alex Miller who just released a duet with 90’s country star Tracy Byrd. Here’s a TEASE of that fun song. And Barry Hutchens, my friend from North Carolina who I played a show at the Bluebird Café recently will join the two of us. Should be a fun collaboration.
Have a great Monday!
