The last Hump Day of March is here. Wednesday is bringing some sunshine. 71 for a high today.
YESTERDAY
I had an open day as my writing appointment was cancelled because my co-writer was in a doctor’s chair trying to get relief from his allergies. There’s plenty of that going around right now. My wife and daughter deal with it every year. I’m one of the lucky ones that grass, and pollen, and whatever doesn’t seem to bother. For those that do suffer? They made this T-shirt.
SONG OF THE DAY
This is a song a young female artist named Presley Phillips recorded “Love Like This” that I wrote with her and my talented friend Zach Runquist who can play every single stringed instrument ever invented. Zach invited me to write with her and Presley that day which is now several years ago.
Presley. wanted to write something about how she wanted a lasting love like her grandparents had for years and years. That was lasting and true. That’s what we wrote that day many years ago.
And it’s the only time I’ve written with Presley. And today I’m not even sure where she is or what she’s doing which is one of the odd things that happens in the music business. All I know is…she surely SANG this song. Click on the link and hear for yourself.
A NEW SHOW
Saturday July 5 I’ll be back in my old stomping grounds as I’ll play at Mo Mo Fest in Louisiana, Missouri. I’ll be playing that first song I ever recorded “Mo Mo The Missouri Monster” that originated in that riverfront town all those years ago.
Supposedly folks there spotted a Big Foot and I wound up recording a song about it that I wrote with my friends at my first radio station I worked at. Those friends are Joe Lewis who was the morning guy on KPCR Radio in Bowling Green, Missouri.
And the late station owner pictured here at that one-bedroom trailer radio station Paul Salois.
That song still remains popular in that region and the story still lives. There’s even a historical museum in the town that has a gallery all about Mo Mo and the plaque they presented me a few years ago when I went there for a big anniversary celebration of that monster.
It looks like this will be an all-day festival at the riverfront and as soon as I have my start time and more information I’ll be posting it here. This is going to be some kind of fun.
ON THE CHART
Blessed to see that two gospel-bluegrass songs I’ve co-written are still on this chart. Both have been there several weeks now and are still getting airplay. “Country Faith” and “God Never Made A Mountain”.
“Country Faith” at #6 from Kristen Leigh Bearfield with Karen Peck was written with Kristen and Tim McGraw’s guitar player Bob Minner. Our publisher put the three of us in a room one day to write this idea Kristen had for a song to be used on a TV show she’s hosting. They released it as a single and it’s been a #1 song for us. So thank you Joe Dan Cornett for putting the three of us in the room that day.
And “God Never Made a Mountain” sitting at #9 from my friend Kristy Cox has been another great blessing as it’s been on the charts for several months now. That song was an idea of mine that I co-wrote with Andrea Pearson and Josh Shilling.
It never gets old seeing your song on any chart.
HEALTH NOTES
Texas measles have grown to 330, with 40 people hospitalized.
Coca Cola has recalled 10,000 soda cans due to ‘foreign object contamination’.
A new report concludes that chewing gum can shed microplastics into saliva.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
I hope so too.
CMA HALL OF FAMERS
Congrats to these three talented folks who are going into the Country Music Hall of Fame this year.
Tony Brown is a noted producer who recorded more hits than you could ever name. And at one point he played piano for Elvis.
The late June Carter Cash who helped write “Ring of Fire” and stood by Johnny Cash when he needed an angel to do that is also going in.
And Kenny Chesney who is still filling up the biggest arenas and is STILL having #1 songs is also in this year.
Congrats to all three. All so deserving.
NEBRASKA
The small town of Pawnee, Nebraska will give you $50,000 if you move there. They need people. The population is around 2,500 right now. The $50,000 is a down payment on a new home in a section of new homes they are building there. Anyone want to live in Pawnee?
AIR JORDAN
How great was Michael Jordan? Consider this. He once played 36 holes of golf, drank 10 beers, and then scored 50 points for the Bulls in an NBA game. All on the same day!
I got to watch him play once against the Milwaukee Bucks when I was on the radio up there. The radio station had a ticket that put me one row back right behind the Milwaukee Buck players. The Bucks had a new rookie who early in the game put a move on Jordan and scored a basket. From that point on for the rest of the game Jordan just embarrassed the kid scoring at will. And at one point I watched him smile at Mike Dunleavy the Buck’s head coach with Dunleavy smiling back knowing exactly what Michael was doing.
He was by far the greatest player I ever saw on a basketball court.
WILD BOAR
And how about this guy from Florida who caught a wild boar with his HANDS. His hunting buddies all said they had “never seen anything like it”. For good reason. Wild boars are dangerous…vicious sometimes. And this guy grabs one with his bare hands. Wow.
My late brother Gene was quite the outdoorsman as well. I
can remember being out in a hayfield with him once when he picked up bale of
hay that had a big snake under it. He just runs over and grabs it and holds it
up to me. Pretty sure I passed out. And he could catch fish with his bare hands
as well. But I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t go after a wild boar that way. Pretty
sure.
HEADLINE OF THE DAY
Husband and Dog Gone. She Just Wants the Dog Back. (An
old joke that’s still funny. My friend Brent Burns and I put a different twist
on that old joke when we wrote “I Miss My Boat” (since she’s been gone) that he
recorded.
TODAY
Nothing big on my calendar for today. My wife tells me we have to shop for groceries. Sigh. I was a grocery bag boy when I was young. And now I’m a personal bagger for my wife. Full circle.
Have a great Wednesday.
