Writing On Beach...Fun Cities...An Erhu Gift

BILL BLOG

Tuesday February 25, 2025

The waves are rolling in on Tuesday morning outside my condo window here in Panama City. And the weather-folks down here on the Gulf Coast are calling for postcard weather for the rest of my stay. I’ll take it! Sunshine and 70 will be the high today.

YESTERDAY

I spent a lot of time resting again and staring at the sand and the waves outside my door. And the good news is I think I’m starting to feel a little better.

The ocean is working its magic on my health it seems.

I got the guitar out of the case and wrote a new song while staring out at the water, and started a second one…a beach tune…of course! So, I felt like I accomplished something!

Then late yesterday afternoon I put my feet up, turned on some tropical music, and watched the sunset. I was listening to the Jimmy Buffett Pandora station through my ea buds and I swear “Margaritaville” started playing about the time the sun turned orange and dipped into the blue. Magical.

Then I closed out the evening by grabbing some red snapper at a local seafood place in Panama City.

Pretty much a perfect day.

SONG OF THE DAY

Might as well share another beach song that I wrote with Brent Burns. Seems appropriate. This one is titled “Boy And A Girl And A Beach” and sounds a bit like an old Beach Boys or Venture’s kind of song. I had the title, Brent loved it, we wrote it, and the musicians on this session played the heck out of it. It’s fun. Take a listen.

HEALTH NOTES

Nearly 100 now are sickened with measles as the outbreak has spread in Texas and New Mexico.

A new study suggests that we may not be getting enough B12, which could raise your risk of developing dementia in the future. They say we should be taking 2.4 micrograms of B12 daily.

One more study says that exercise may help patients with colon cancer live as long as those who have never had it.

HERE’S YOU SIGN

Kind of makes you wonder what the heck happened, doesn’t it?

NO DUCK AND COVER

Now NASA is telling us that the asteroid they’ve been tracking is no longer a threat to hit Earth in the year 2032. Wonder if they’ll give me a refund on this bad boy?

MOST FUN CITIES

According to WalletHub the top 5 Fun Cities would be New Orleans, Atlanta, Miami, Orlando and Vegas as the #1 most fun city.

Nashville came in 36 and I would have thought we’d be higher on the list considering all the honkytonk bars we have in town. Cincinnati where I lived for years was ranked #15 which surprised me and St. Louis where I grew up came in #12 which was an even bigger surprise. Must be all the Budweiser Beer folks are drinking there.

SHE SAID IT

Long-time New York Post columnist Cindy Adams says, “Pet ownership is the joy of my life…plus it’s easier than housebreaking a husband.”

DO I WANT ANY OF THESE?

A shark blanket that you can turn into a onesie-hoody?

Or a cat ice cube tray?

 Or a pig-shaped grease container?

All three items are hot sellers on Amazon. I don’t see me rushing to buy any of those. Plus, growing up in the country like I did one understands that leftover bacon grease goes into a coffee can that you sit on the back of the stove. I mean c’mon!

THEM AND US

The Oscar nominees this year will get to pick up a free gift bag before the Awards Ceremony coming up March 2. That little gift bag is worth over 6 figures and one of the items is a liposuction treatment. Hey…it’s Hollywood y’all.

I got to experience a much smaller version of that gift bag experience one time in my radio career. I was in Nashville to cover the CMA Awards show for WUBE radio in Cincinnati at the time. All of the radio broadcasters had the chance to walk into a gift tent and choose one item for free. For the life of me, I don’t remember what I chose. But I remember that my radio partner Amanda Orlando chose this.

Uh-huh. They call the instrument an erhu…and it do make a racket y’all. Now that I think about it…I think I might have chosen the liposuction coupon.

COLLEGE GRADS

The college major that will make you the most money is Petroleum Engineer. Starting salary is in the $93,000 range and by mid-career the pay is $187,000.

I did not see “songwriter” anywhere in the top 1,000. And yes, some colleges like Belmont University in Nashville offer up a songwriter major. Invest in oil kids.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Father Goes for Kidney Treatment…Leaves Hospital As A Woman. (Some kind of treatment)

TODAY

Changing into shorts and flip-flops for the rest of the day.

Have a great Tuesday!

Storm Weary...Wrestling Church...Gators

BILL BLOG Friday April 4, 2025  Friday morning in soggy Nashville.   YESTERDAY It was another day of storms, tornadoes, and a whole lot of flooding. And it sounds like we could get more and nobody wants that. Folks are storm-weary from the constant flood and tornado warnings that have been lighting up our phones for the past couple of days and nights. Hallways have become bedrooms for some. Schools are still closed today because of the flooding and damage and the weather forecast predicts that we are still not done with this system that just won’t go away. There are now 5 confirmed deaths so far.   Across the region where these storms have been constant the weather service has issued over 300 tornado warnings. There were a lot of big wind-walls like this one that hit near Nashville.   Selmer, Tennessee…also near Nashville was really hit hard.   Our house is on a hill so we don’t worry much about flooding. But I’m going to...

Tornado Night...Good Music News...Buckaroo Lullaby

BILL BLOG Thursday April 3, 2025   Thursday morning. It’s about 5 AM as I’m starting this blog and it’s been a really long night with tornado warnings. LOTS of them. We were hunkered down for an hour and a half in the middle of the night in our safe place. Our tornado warning just lifted but there may be more on the way. Lots of hail…large hail and winds and VERY heavy rain that is going to hang around and cause major flooding all over the Nashville area.   As I’m trying to get this blog in this Thursday morning, I have the TV on watching the radar for updates. When the sun rises at about 6:30 I’m hoping to look out and see our trees still standing. And I’m rooting for the power to stay on as well. We’ve already had 2 deaths reported and it’s early.   And the weather folks are saying we could have another system coming through on Saturday. It’s been a long while since I’ve sat through a stormy system that lasts as long as this one is going to. A...

April Fools Day...Christmas Song...Cheap States

BILL BLOG Tuesday April 1, 2025   Tuesday morning. April Fool’s Day. Don’t fall for anything day.   The big storm that rolled through Sunday night included 3 tornados cooled things off in Nashville considerably. The hoodies and jackets came out after they’d been put away.   YESTERDAY My writing session was with Angus Gill and his housemate Blue Foley joined the two of us. Blue is from Utah originally, produces a big songwriters festival in Denmark every year, has had two Grammy nominations in his past, and Ashley McBryde to name one artist has recorded songs he has written.   Several months back I was over at their house and Blue was upstairs trying to put something together with tool belt on. I said, “Some assembly required huh”?   And that lit him up. So yesterday we wrote a really cool Christmas tune with that title.   It was good getting to know Blue better and it’s always fun writing young Angus.   SON...
