Studio Weekend...Grammy's...Deer Calling

BILL BLOG

Monday February 3, 2025

Monday morning and warm weather has returned with temperatures. 74 and sunny in Nashville today!

 THE WEEKEND

Friday morning early I took my friend Brent Burns to the Big D and Bubba nationally syndicated radio show where he made and appearance and sang a couple of funny songs including “Trailer Park Sexy”. That was appropriate as Brent is going to be the Grand Marshall soon at the Mardis Gras Parade in Gulf Shores where he lives and that will be the theme of his float and entourage.

In fact, Brent will be dressed as Cousin Eddie from Christmas vacation. I can only imagine.

Check out Brent’s performances HERE in this video from Big D & Bubba.

It was great seeing my old producer and program director Jonathan Shaffer from when I did the morning show at WSM Radio. He’s now the Big D & Bubba producer and is doing so well. Not a surprise to me.

THE STUDIO

Brent and I were in Marv Treutel’s recording studio working on 6 new songs for his next album.

Once again a great set of pros to work with not the least of which is producer Dave Francis who guided us all through those six new tracks with the musicians.

And it’s always great to work with musicians who laugh as hard as we do while working in the recording studio. Always a fun time.

FRIDAY

Brent and I went back to the studio where he sang the vocals over those six tracks recorded the day before. Everything sounded great and somewhere down the line Brent will be back here in Nashville to add 3 or 4 other songs to have a complete album that should be out before the end of the year.

So a productive week with Brent that started with his first ever appearance at the Bluebird Café this past Tuesday night. Here’s a small EXAMPLE of what went down when Brent and I sang “Going Ugly Early” together.

GRAMMYS

Beyoncé was the big winner last night. In fact, she won “Best COUNTRY Album of the Year”. Uh huh. Somewhere Loretta Lynn is rolling over in her grave. I’m not sure why they even have a Country category anymore as they rarely hand a Grammy trophy to a COUNTRY artist. Dylan was right…”the times they are a changing”.

Still, having a Grammy attached to your work is a badge of honor for anyone in the music industry. I know I’m proud of this Grammy Certificate that hangs on my wall for being a writer on “Safe Haven” that was on the Hillary Scott & Scott Family album “Love Remains” that won two Grammy’s in 2012. An honor I share with my co-writers on that song Jimmy Fortune and Sydni Perry.

CONGRATS

To my friend and co-writer Jerry Salley who signed me to my publishing deal at Billy Blue several years ago. Last night Chris Stapleton won the Grammy for Best Solo Performance on a country song “It Takes A Woman”. And Jerry is a co-writer on that song with Chris and Ronnie Bowman. Big time stuff there and I could not be happier for my friend. Way to go Jerry!

SONG OF THE DAY

Today I’m choosing the up-tempo bluegrass song “Faster ThanAngels Can Fly” from Irene Kelley…one of the first songs we wrote ever wrote together that she was kind enough to put on one of her albums. The song was derived from a true story about a car accident she was involved in while growing up in Pennsylvania. She lost a friend tragically and wanted to honor her friend’s memory…so we did.

HEALTH NOTES

A new study points out that a lack of sleep increases insulin resistance in women.

Did you know that tonsils could regrow?  And that some people have their tonsils removed more than once?  Me neither until I read that his weekend.

New statistics reveal that 2 in 3 people stop obesity drugs within one year.

HERE’S YOU SIGN AND MAILBOX

Yep…just leave those Amazon Prime deliveries in the dryer.

OUR AIRPORT

I’ve blogged before about how our newspaper did a poll asking their readers if they would rather have our airport (BNA) renamed “Donald Trump International” or “Dolly Parton International”? The results are in.

Dolly got 85% of the vote. Donald Trump 44%.

77% of those polled said they wanted NO change of name. Pretty sure that’s what will happen.

DID YOU KNOW?

They have a “deer calling championship” in Germany. Calling red deer to be exact. I’ve been around deer all my life, never had an idea that they might listen if I hollered.

What does that sound like?  Take a look- LISTEN.

SURVEY SAYS

According to a poll from Clever Real Estate, 1,000 folks surveyed picked Nashville as the best city to live in and North Carolina as the best state to live in. Nice to be popular, but I don’t know where we’re going to put all the folks wanting to move to Music City. I’m proposing a Trump tariff on any new person who brings a guitar to town.

JUST STOP!

The arrested a woman at a Luke Combs concert for dancing “too hard”. Think twerking. How’d she react?  Just like any good entrepreneur would. She’s selling the skirt she twerked in and got in trouble in for $250. The “twerk” skirt if you will. Is this a great country or what?!

FOR THE DISNEY FANS
And I’m one. Some changes are coming to the parks as they are getting rid of some rides and retooling others.

The entire Tom Sawyer-Riverboat thing will be gone. So will the Muppet 3-D Vision show that’s one of my faves at the MGM theme park. The Hall of Presidents may disappear and the Dinosaur indoor ride at the Animal Kingdom is also going to be replaced.

Being rebuilt? The Test Track at EPCOT, and Big Thunder Mountain at the Magic Kingdom. So those will be closed for a long while.

A 60 BILLION dollar expansion is underway.

ONE MORE SUPER BOWL COMMERCIAL

This one featuring chef Gordon Ramsay and SNL’s Pete Davidson for the Hexclad frying pan that we’ll see during the big game coming up next weekend in New Orleans.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

I Chose My Dog Over My Boyfriend And Never Looked Back.  (That’s a pretty bad day when you get dumped for Fido)

TODAY

I’m writing with my friend Andrea Pearson today at my publishing company before flying to a computer shop to pick up a new computer as mind has gone belly up. I’m actually blogging today on my wife’s laptop. And she wants to charge me $3 a minute to use it. Sigh.

Have a great Monday!

A Bluebird Show...New Album In The Mail...An Interview With An Old Friend

BILL BLOG Tuesday November 26, 2024   Tuesday morning…couple days away from carving the turkey. 50 for the high today here in Music City…bracing for some cold weather on the way.   YESTERDAY I had nothing musical on the calendar yesterday…but had one of those “had to do” things that took up a chunk of my day. Sometimes you can’t control a calendar…the calendar controls you and give you no choice. But there was some good news that came rolling in.   NEW SHOW On Tuesday January 28 I’ll be hosting a songwriter round at the world famous Bluebird Café. And the great part about this news is that I’m going to be able to add my longtime friend Brent Burns to this show…something that’s been a bucket list item for him.   And I’m so glad that I’m the one who will get to make this happen for him. EVERY songwriter wants to play the Bluebird. And somehow, even though my friend lived in Nashville and wrote very seriously for a long while, he ne...

Trio of Writers...Post CMA...Alligator Bread

BILL BLOG Friday November 22, 2024   Friday…the weekend be here! Little chillier going into the weekend with a high of just 49 today and the low tonight will dip down to 37.   YESTERDAY I rhymed with two friends yesterday Rick Lang and Kristy Cox . Though I have written with both many times, and each of them have recorded songs I’ve written with them, it was the first time the three of us sat down together. And yesterday we wrote a gospel song idea that Rick brought with him…pretty much an entire chorus.      I was able to share with Rick that I heard one of our songs “ Church Bells A Ringin ” that’s on the Blue Collar Gospel Album-Songs of Rick Lang on Sirius-XM on the way to our appointment sung by Danny Paisley and a group of great harmony singers. That was pretty cool.     And we got to celebrate with Kristy for her album “Let It Burn” that’s up for a couple of big Golden Guitar Awards this year including Best Albu...

A Duo Write...Wienermobile Applications...Love Tom

BILL BLOG Thursday December 19, 2024   Thursday morning has arrived and after some heavy rain here in Nashville yesterday it will cool off to a high of just 45 today.   YESTERDAY I had such a fun write with 2/3rds of the “ Three Times A Lady ” trio.   That would be Victoria Camp and a pregnant Kennedy Scott . Kennedy is due about the first of May of next year…and her baby bump is growing. She and the trio will be playing several weeks in a row at Dollywood come next March…so that will be an interesting challenge for her for sure.   And it was Kennedy who brought in a very cool idea that we wrote together after Victoria came up with an almost “swampy” kind of melody to fit under the lyrics. Got a pretty good feeling this one will be on their next album. Yep, a good day.   SONG OF THE DAY I’ve posted this song before but it seems appropriate to make it today’s song of the day after talking about the “Three Times A Lady”. ...
