Monday morning…and we are soaked in Nashville. We had high winds late Saturday night, parts of Tennessee flooded, and it got cold enough Sunday morning with no power that I put my feet up to the fireplace…the only source of heat for few hours
And looking ahead we could get 2-5 inches of snow here Tuesday night into Wednesday. Geez. A high of just 35 here in Nashville today.
THE WEEKEND
Mine started Friday morning with Alex Miller as we sat down together and worked on making a song that Alex likes better. His producer and our mutual friend is asking a stronger second verse in this song. So, Friday was spent making one more effort to get that stronger second verse. Part of the songwriting process sometimes. And hopefully the new verse will do the trick.
Either way it’s always fun to hang with Alex in a writing room.
WALK OF FAME
Over the weekend my friend Linda Davis had her name put into the Walk of Fame in Carthage Texas which is quite the honor.
Pretty tall cotton when you get your name on sidewalk now. And hers is right alongside the late singing cowboy-actor Tex Ritter who also got his name on the same sidewalk.
Just happy for my friend and east-Texas native. So deserved.
SPEAKING OF TEXAS
Linda and her husband Lang and myself will take our “Evening in the Round” show to east Texas in just a few weeks.
We play in Crockett, Texas on Friday March 7 at the Civic Center there. 7:30 pm show.
And then Saturday March 8 in Marshall,Texas at Memorial City Hall. This is also a 7:30 pm show.
TV
I did watch some of Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary show last night. Lots of funny moments and there were a TON of stars on stage and in the audience.
And I saw a lot of the Daytona 500 that William Byron won for the second year in a row. But it was this heart stopping airborne flip ride that Ryan Preece went on that was the talk of the race.
It’s a testament to the safety features and technology that NASCR has embraced through the years. How he walked away from that is just amazing. And it make you wonder if Dale Earnhardt wouldn’t be alive today if he’d been driving one of these new-gen cars.
SONG OF THE DAY
Today I’m selecting a song that I wrote with Mark Houser that’s on his new gospel-bluegrass album titled Gospel Train. These are my friend’s words about the “why” of this recording.
My friend has cancer and he’s battling it like a super hero staying positive and being “positive” with others. I feel extra blessed that he chose to include our song “Where You Choose to Go” on this wonderful album. It’s not only my “song of the day but I think it’s my song of the year to honor Mark.
HEALTH NOTES
Kudos to the man who ran 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days after beating cancer.
Some experts say pairing tea with chocolate is better for you than drinking wine.
The Department of Agriculture has issued a conditional license to the company Zoetis for an avian flu vaccine for use in chickens trying to do something to ward off high egg prices.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
Genius idea!
THEM AND US
Beyonce and Jay Z spent 3.5 MILLION for a super-yacht the week of the Super Bowl to cruise around in. And they were generous. They tipped the crew $630,000. I’m pretty sure the two of them won’t be shopping at the Two Dollar Store.
MORE THEM THAN US
Don’t believe all the real estate news about home prices dropping in Florida. Well, not in South Florida for sure. Reports say that 100-MILLION-dollar homes are the new NORMAL in the Miami and surrounding area. I’m sure Beyonce and Jay Z own 3 or 4 of those bad boys.
FUNNY
Rodney Dangerfield was a funny “one liner” man. He made Carson, me and the world laugh hard many times for his “My Wife Jokes”. Like, “My wife was afraid of the dark…then she saw me naked and now she’s afraid of the light”.
Or how about this one. ”My wife has to be the worst cook. I don’t believe meat loaf should glow in the dark”.
But his longtime wife Joan has a favorite “My Wife” joke from her late husband and it’s this one.
“I haven’t spoken to my wife in years. I didn’t want to interrupt her.”
GOTTA TRY THESE!
Who knew they made these?
GOD BLESS THE USA
Over the weekend President Trump added Lee Greenwood to the Kennedy Center Board. Kind of cool to see a “country” artist sit on that board.
For sure Lee bleeds “red white and blue”.
I’ve had the pleasure of being around him a few times. He tells great stories and of course always brings the house down when he sings “God Bless the USA”. He did that a couple of years ago when I was playing a private event with my friends Steve Dean, and Jenny Tolman at the Country Music Hall of Fame. Steve helped write the #1 song for Lee “Hearts Aren’t Made to Break”.
The private group that hired us to perform had no idea Lee would be there. It was a surprise. And when Steve started singing that #1 song…Lee snuck up right by him and sang the song with him. Pretty cool moment. And then he sat down behind a grand piano, I interviewed him, and he talked about the inspiration for “God Bless the USA” and then sang that iconic song.
EGGS
And I paid a surcharge for the first time over a weekend breakfast.
What in the wide wide world of eggs is the world coming to?
SMALL WORLD AFTER ALL
After all these years the “It’s A Small World Ride” at Disney is adding a new verse to that song you can’t get out of your head that’s played over and over during that boat ride.
The new second verse is:
Mother earth unites us in heart and mind
And the love we give makes us humankind
Through our vast wondrous land, when we stand hand in hand
It’s a small world after all
I doubt that a lot of us will remember that verse for a long while…but the chorus? I have not gotten it out of my head since the first time I rode that ride when it first opened all those years ago.
PRESIDENTS
Don’t forget…today is President’s Day and there’s a law (I think) that requires you to go out and buy a new mattress. Do you part America.
HEADLINE OF THE DAY
Zoo Accused of Painting Donkeys Black and White to Look Like Zebras: Stripes look A Mess. (You need a good artist because I don’t think there are any ‘paint by number’ donkeys out there.
TODAY
I’m writing with my young Aussie friend Angus Gill who lives in the states now and his friend and writer Blue Foley. First time for this trio.
And then Angus and I are going to record a funny song we’ve written to pitch to a well-known artist in town who records funny songs. We’ll see how that goes.
Have a great Monday!
