Trio Writing...Clydesdales In Town...Packing For Carolina's

BILL BLOG

Thursday January 16, 2025

Thursday morning…time to pack for a road trip to the Carolina's starting tomorrow morning.

Beautiful in Nashville today. Sunshine and a high of 52. But…winter is not gone apparently as a cold front will rush in again and by Monday the high will only be 19 degrees.

YESTERDAY

Two of my favorite co-writers are Andrea Pearson and Josh Shilling. And yesterday I got to write with both of them. Josh is crazy good piano player and also plays guitar. He’s all over the country the past year playing piano for Wynonna and singing harmony parts. So I’d not had a chance to rhyme with him for a long time.

And Andrea is an in demand background and lead singer in this town and plays great guitar as well. So I was in the room with a couple of great voices and talent. And Josh brought a great up-tempo bluegrass song idea that we wrote that my publisher Joe Dan Cornett listened to after it was finished and loved it as well. A good sign, and he will start pitching it right away to two or three bluegrass groups who are looking for up-tempo songs right now.

Just a real pleasure every time I get to sit down and create with these two artists.

SONG OF THE DAY

So I thought I’d share a song that Josh and I wrote that the great Del McCoury recorded “Once Again”. It landed on an album from Del that was nominated for a Grammy last year as Bluegrass Album of the Year. Molly Tuttle won that award but I was certainly proud to have this song on an album up for that prestigious music award.

When we wrote the song, it felt very bluesy to me…a bit like a great Ronnie Milsap ballad. And I would have never heard Del McCoury for the song…never would have pitched it. But Josh knew him well and what Del liked and so Del recorded the song and had Josh play the piano on the track. You don’t hear a lot of piano on bluegrass songs. So it was an out of the box musical blessing for sure. Del's version of our song sounds like an old Jerry Lee Lewis song to me. Listen and you'll hear that.

 HEALTH NOTES

A groundbreaking study has shown that resistant starch, found in oats and slightly green bananas, can significantly reduce the risk of various cancers.

Yesterday the FDA banned red dye No. 3 from food, drinks and ingested drugs in the US.

The BBC says that chia seeds and pumpkin seeds are healthier than most vegetables. Next time I eat out I’m going to order chia pets as one of my side dishes.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

They should have known…right?

TOP CITIES

The publication Time Out surveyed over 18,000 folks asking them to name the best cities in the world. Here’s the top 5.

5…London

4…Melbourne

3…New York City

2…Bangkok

And the #1 choice was Cape Town, South Africa.

BIG HORSES

The Budweiser Clydesdales are in Nashville right now. They’ve been out to our Zoo…and yesterday they were trotting down lower Broadway and making beer deliveries to lucky patrons in some of our honkytonks. Pretty cool.

I grew up in Missouri and still remember making a trip to Grant’s Farm where they kept some of the Clydesdale. You get to ride a little trolly car and tour the estate. Lots of fun stuff to do there. If you’ve never gone…and you get near the Arch City…you should go. And take the kids.

ROCKET

Jeff Bezos…who owns Amazon Prime saw his Blue Origin rocket ship named “Glenn” lift off into the wild blue yonder successfully yesterday. So…imagine how much faster those Amazon deliveries are going to be now!

SPEAKING OF FLYING

Southwest Airlines has been sued for chronically late flights by the Feds. Great. Guess which airline I’m on tomorrow?  Uh huh.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Library Vote Upholds Decision To OK Guns, But Ban Wooden Shoes. (So I guess if you’re Dutch…your half happy?)

TODAY

It’s packing day for a trip to North and South Carolina for two shows over the weekend with Linda Davis & Lang Scott. Saturday night we play Kill Devils Hill, North Carolina on the Outer Banks with our “Evening in the Round Show”. And a nice bonus…my sister Vickie is going to be at the show. I didn’t realize how close she lived to that part of North Carolina until she called and checked so it’s going to be great to spend a little time with her. We have a view of the ocean from our hotel…but it’s going to be too cold to get out on the beach unfortunately…but…I’m going to enjoy the view for sure.

Then Sunday we’ll be in North Mrytle Beach, South Carolina doing a show with our friends Darin and Brooke Aldridge at the Greg Rowles Legacy Theatre.

So on a plane tomorrow.

Have a great Thursday!

A Bluebird Show...New Album In The Mail...An Interview With An Old Friend

BILL BLOG Tuesday November 26, 2024   Tuesday morning…couple days away from carving the turkey. 50 for the high today here in Music City…bracing for some cold weather on the way.   YESTERDAY I had nothing musical on the calendar yesterday…but had one of those “had to do” things that took up a chunk of my day. Sometimes you can’t control a calendar…the calendar controls you and give you no choice. But there was some good news that came rolling in.   NEW SHOW On Tuesday January 28 I’ll be hosting a songwriter round at the world famous Bluebird Café. And the great part about this news is that I’m going to be able to add my longtime friend Brent Burns to this show…something that’s been a bucket list item for him.   And I’m so glad that I’m the one who will get to make this happen for him. EVERY songwriter wants to play the Bluebird. And somehow, even though my friend lived in Nashville and wrote very seriously for a long while, he ne...

A Duo Write...Wienermobile Applications...Love Tom

BILL BLOG Thursday December 19, 2024   Thursday morning has arrived and after some heavy rain here in Nashville yesterday it will cool off to a high of just 45 today.   YESTERDAY I had such a fun write with 2/3rds of the “ Three Times A Lady ” trio.   That would be Victoria Camp and a pregnant Kennedy Scott . Kennedy is due about the first of May of next year…and her baby bump is growing. She and the trio will be playing several weeks in a row at Dollywood come next March…so that will be an interesting challenge for her for sure.   And it was Kennedy who brought in a very cool idea that we wrote together after Victoria came up with an almost “swampy” kind of melody to fit under the lyrics. Got a pretty good feeling this one will be on their next album. Yep, a good day.   SONG OF THE DAY I’ve posted this song before but it seems appropriate to make it today’s song of the day after talking about the “Three Times A Lady”. ...

Quiet New Year...Ray Stevens...A Look Back

BILL BLOG January 1, 2025   Wednesday…bring with it the very first day of a New Year. Time flies don’t it?   YESTERDAY A lazy New Year’s Eve day around the Whyte House. My wife and I called our daughter Heather over in Germany to wish her a Happy Birthday…yep a New Year’s Eve kid. She and her husband Casey were in a theme park in the Netherlands called “Efteling” to celebrate the occasion. The two of them took us there when we were over in Germany last year so in our minds at least…we could picture where they were at. More on the Germany trip at the end of today’s Blog in the “Looking Back” section.   TWEAKING I also spent a little time on the phone with producer-writer-singer Jerry Salley who is recording a song I helped write with my friend Andrea Pearson tweaking some lyrics of that song that young-talented bluegrass artist Caroline Owens is getting ready to record on her next album. Heck of an up-tempo tune and we wanted to make s...
