Friday morning. Bring on the weekend! We’re starting the weekend in cool fashion here in Nashville with a high of just 39 today. But…come Christmas Eve we will be pushing 60 for a high. Santa will need to layer up this year.
YESTERDAY
A bit of a lazy day yesterday, but last night my wife and I went to Eric Church’s place on Lower Broadway "Chiefs" in Nashville to see the one man songwriter show “Love,Tom” featuring the great hit songwriter Tom Douglas. Thank you to Lang Scott & Linda Davis for the invitation and Christmas gift.
“Love Tom” is a true story about Tom Douglas’ life... warts and all. And throughout the process are the wonderful songs he’s written like “HouseThat Built Me” for Miranda Lambert. And “Run To You” for Lady A which was a really special moment as Hillary Scott of Lady A was in the audience with us watching as were several wonderful friends, songwriters and musicians. Tony Brown was right behind me. He played piano for Elvis…produced George Strait and many iconic songs and artists. My buddy Jimmy Fortune and his wife, Sharon White of the “The Whites” and on and on.
This stage show was taken from the documentary by the same name which is also wonderful. Last night stood and narrated his life story and then would sit behind the piano and play one of those wonderful songs like “Grown Men Don’t’ Cry” complete with a 4 piece string section on stage…and across the room you could see grown men cry while he sang it.
Truly amazing show and evening with friends. If you ever get the chance to see the show…do. And certainly you can check out his documentary online if you’re curious about songwriters and where and how the songs come about.
And for now you can read this article about the show that was just printed in our Tennessean newspaper…explains it better than me.
SONG OF THE DAY
Something to make you smile from my friend Gerald Smith known as the “Georgia Quacker” because he can quack like a duck better than a duck. And he did that for a few years on the TV show "Hee Haw" as the voice of that duck you saw waddling across the screen.
The song “To The Grave” is an idea I had that the two of had a ball writing. What things would you not want folks to know you did? The things you take to your grave.
HEALTH NOTES
New York City lost nearly half of all drugstores in the past decade with 10% closing just this year as shoplifting and crime has run rampant.
The FDA has put out a massive recall on Frito Lay’s potato chips because they may contain an undeclared allergen.
A woman received a pig kidney transplant and walked out of the hospital days later with a second chance on life. And the medical folks are saying cross-species transplants are the future for these kinds of procedures.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
Now they put up the sign. After my Christmas shopping is wrapped up.
SUPERDUDE
Yep, a new modern Superman is coming to movie screens and after watching this TRAILER? It looks pretty darned good. Nobody looks better in red shorts and blue tights than this guy.
CHRISTMAS STUFF
Americans they say will spend 10.1 Billion on unwanted Christmas gifts this season. And 53% of us will get a disappointing Christmas present. (Hey…just because you won nothing on that scratch off ticket in your Christmas stocking doesn’t make it a bad present. It’s the thought that counts!)
MORE CHRISTMAS
My good friend Randy Brooks who penned “Grandma Got Run
Over By A Reindeer” just posted what may be the coolest performance of his song
ever by the group “Post Modern Jukebox” based here in Nashville. They tweak
songs and put their own spin on them…this one for sure. Check out the VIDEO of
Randy’s iconic loved-hated Christmas classic. With dancers!
THE GOVERNMENT
They’re threatening to shut down once again. So as Conan O’Brien once pointed out, “Get ready for absolutely no noticeable difference”.
THEY’RE COMING TO TOWN
For the 14th year in a row the folks at Frommer’s Magazine has listed Nashville as one of the top global destinations. I saw plenty of folks down on Lower Broadway last night for sure. And they just keep coming.
The other top destinations listed are Bolivia, Zambia, Ghent, Belgium and Hobart, Australia. But none of them have 8 million celebrity honkytonks like we do.
IF YOU CAN’T GET IT HERE
You surely can’t get what you need anywhere else.
TODAY
I’ll be back online with my east coast friend Rick Lang writing this morning. Rick has written a long, long list of bluegrass and gospel songs that have been recorded by many different folks through the years. And he always has great ideas to write about it which makes my job pretty easy sometimes.
THE WEEKEND?
Last minute preparations for Christmas! Have a great weekend!
