Skyline Chili...Greenville Ohio Show...Special Guest

BILL BLOG

Monday November 18, 2024

Monday morning and I’m back home in Nashville. 74 with sunshine here today.

THE WEEKEND

Friday I made a little trip up to Greenville, Ohio with Linda Davis and Lang Scott for our Saturday night “Evening in the Round” show. But first…we made a stop in Louisville for this.

Uh huh…Skyline Chili. The Chili Parlor has a ton of locations in Ohio…but they also have a couple in southern Florida, two in Indianapolis that I know of and 3 in Louisville which was right on the way to Greenville. Perfect way to kick off our trip.

FRIDAY EVENING

We got settled into our hotel…and there was a great Mexican restaurant that we took advantage of that sold Dos Equis in a tall COLD mug. Perfect for a nightcap will talking with my friend Lang about the Tyson-Jake Paul fight on Netflix.

Turns out it wasn’t much of a fight but more like a “money grab” as Paul took home 40 million and Mike got 20 million. I think the USA Today described it perfectly when they wrote, “Mike Tyson didn’t lose to an elite opponent. He lost because he’s 58.”

After the fight the jokes started. One social post said that Jake Paul is now challenging Jimmy Carter, age 100 to fight him. And so it goes.

SATURDAY SHOW

Our “Evening in the Round” show was so much fun inside the beautiful St. Clair Memorial Hall in Greenville, Ohio. Before hitting the stage I found out that Greenville is the birth place of Annie Oakley.

Linda played Annie Oakley in High School in the play “Annie Get Your Gun” just as her former boss Reba did on Broadway.

But Linda’s husband Lang is distant kin to Pocahontas believe it or not. So that led to an interesting conversation about who would win THAT fight. I took Annie Oakley because it’s hard to win when you bring a bow and arrow to a gun fight.

The venue Saturday night was truly one of the most beautiful venues I’ve ever played in.

Built in the early 1900’s and restored in the 90’s it’s truly a piece of art with great acoustics. And the staff, sound, lighting crew were all so great and professional

SURPRISE

And I had the greatest surprise when a longtime friend of mine Lisa Shaffer (Stone) made the 2 hour trip to Greenville from Kentucky with her husband Kevin and three kids and a sister to catch our show.

Lisa and I wrote a lot of songs together when she was in Nashville and she was the original girl singer in our trio “Hits & Grins” with Steve Dean. She left Music City to go back home to Kentucky to raise a family. But we convinced her to get up on stage with us Saturday night where she sang “Does He Love You” the smash hit from Reba and Linda Davis…and of course she knocked it out of the park.

So good to see her and her family and get to hear her sing again. It was truly some kind of great night in Greenville, Ohio. And for those of you who may be unfamiliar with Lisa...here's an example of her wonderful singing.

NEW SHOW

I put on new show in the Tour section here on the website. Friday night our “Hits & Grins” trio will return to Starstruck Farms (Reba’s old place) in Lebanon, Tennessee for a 6:30 pm dinner show. There is indeed a great buffet before we start playing in this very cool venue. Come join us if you can.

SONG OF THE DAY

Speaking of Lisa Shaffer. This is a song the two of us wrote from a line that Jimmy Buffett once said in an interview talking about getting older. He said, “I’m just trying to make clocks slow down”. Lisa and I wrote it and our friends Darin & Brooke Aldridge recorded the heck out of it.

HEALTH NOTES

A human case of bird flu has been confirmed in Oregon, linked to a poultry plant.

Experts say storing too many digital items on your devices could be a sign of disorder.

US Health officials report first known case of new, more severe strain of monkeypox.

REALLY FAST TRAVEL

Elon Musk says he’s developing a rocket that will seat 1,000 passengers allowing anyone to travel from NYC to London in under 30 minutes…and to anywhere in the world under 1 hour! Apparently you will get on a boat that takes you to the rocket that will blast off from the water as you’re strapped in.

No food, no bathrooms on board…no need because you’re there so quickly. So make sure you eat and pee before you blast off kids.

 THIS CLOWN HAS A PROBLEM

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Florida Family Owns Over 200 Snakes, Including Reptiles That Cuddle With The Kids In Bed. (Okay…I won’t be able to sleep tonight after putting that in today’s Blog.)

TODAY
Got a free day today to take care of some “need to take care of” thing.

Have a great Monday!

Freedom Sings USA Event...A Gold Star Mom...An Old Friend Surprise

BILL BLOG Monday September 9, 2024 Monday morning and I’m back home in Nashville from Marion, Illinois. Sunshine and a high of 84 today here in Music City.       THE WEEKEND Thursday I made the three hour trip up to Marion, Illinois for our Freedom Sings USA songwriter retreat with songwriters Bobby Tomberlin , Steve Dean , Irene Kelley, and Don Goodman.   Marion is in southern Illinois…beautiful town and the folks who organized the event were so kind and passionate about honoring their veterans. Friday night they had a “meet and greet” in a beautiful old church where we had a great dinner and then played a show for all of those who attended. The Mayor, the organizers and the veterans.   Each songwriter met the veteran they were going to write with that night. This is mine. His name is Art Fager .   More on Art in a second.   FRIDAY Friday morning we gathered in yet another church for early breakfast and...

Trio of Writers...Post CMA...Alligator Bread

BILL BLOG Friday November 22, 2024   Friday…the weekend be here! Little chillier going into the weekend with a high of just 49 today and the low tonight will dip down to 37.   YESTERDAY I rhymed with two friends yesterday Rick Lang and Kristy Cox . Though I have written with both many times, and each of them have recorded songs I’ve written with them, it was the first time the three of us sat down together. And yesterday we wrote a gospel song idea that Rick brought with him…pretty much an entire chorus.      I was able to share with Rick that I heard one of our songs “ Church Bells A Ringin ” that’s on the Blue Collar Gospel Album-Songs of Rick Lang on Sirius-XM on the way to our appointment sung by Danny Paisley and a group of great harmony singers. That was pretty cool.     And we got to celebrate with Kristy for her album “Let It Burn” that’s up for a couple of big Golden Guitar Awards this year including Best Albu...

Old Radio Friend...Country Faith...Most Southern State

BILL BLOG Monday November 25, 2024   Monday morning…the start of Thanksgiving week y’all. And I still have no idea what a giblet is.   69 with some light rain in Nashville today but getting MUCH colder by weeks end. On Friday our high will only be 44 with a below freezing low of 26. Ain’t ready for none of that now.   THE WEEKEND Mine started Friday morning writing with Alex Miller at my publishing company. We tweaked an old song we’d written a couple of months ago and made it stronger…and then wrote a stone-cold-by-God-unapologetic-sad-country song. Think George Jones sad. Pitiful really…but cool in a retro country way. The kind of stuff 21 year old Alex Miller likes to sing.   Following that Alex and I met an old radio friend from Eureka, California Rollin Trehearne and his wife and their friend at a Mexican restaurant. It was fun catching up with Rollin and introducing his group to my friend Alex.   Rollin Trehearn got his ...
