Old Radio Friend...Country Faith...Most Southern State

BILL BLOG

Monday November 25, 2024

Monday morning…the start of Thanksgiving week y’all. And I still have no idea what a giblet is.

69 with some light rain in Nashville today but getting MUCH colder by weeks end. On Friday our high will only be 44 with a below freezing low of 26. Ain’t ready for none of that now.

THE WEEKEND

Mine started Friday morning writing with Alex Miller at my publishing company. We tweaked an old song we’d written a couple of months ago and made it stronger…and then wrote a stone-cold-by-God-unapologetic-sad-country song. Think George Jones sad. Pitiful really…but cool in a retro country way. The kind of stuff 21 year old Alex Miller likes to sing.

Following that Alex and I met an old radio friend from Eureka, California Rollin Trehearne and his wife and their friend at a Mexican restaurant. It was fun catching up with Rollin and introducing his group to my friend Alex.  Rollin Trehearn got his first radio job at 15!  I got mine at 18 and I thought I was young.

Rollin has been on the radio for 50 years and counting now up in Northern California. Great guy, and it was good seeing him after so many years here in Nashville…his first trip here ever he said which is hard to believe. He and his group were here for this year’s CMA Awards…and by now they’re all back home in California. Great seeing you Rollin!

SONG OF THE DAY

Today’s tune is “Come Back To Me” that was recorded by Lauren Mascitti who I have two shows with on December 28 in Livingston, TN. Check the Tour Section for complete details.

I had a writing appointment on morning with Lauren and our friend Kristen Leigh Bearfield at about the time that Lauren had joined a girl trio named “Three Times A Lady” that she’s no longer with. So they were singing incredible 3 part harmony that reminded me of the “Trio” that featured Dolly, Emmy Lou and Linda Ronstadt. So I wanted to write something like that for Lauren’s new group and brought in a chorus that I sang for the girls that Lauren flipped over. And this song wound up on a wonderful “live” recording that Three Times a Lady made together. Click the link above and hear what we came up with that day.

COUNTRY FAITH

That’s the name of the single that’s out from my friend Kristen Leigh Bearfield featuring gospel music star Karen Peck that’s getting a lot of nice attention now. I wrote the song with Kristen and Tim McGraw’s guitar player Bob Minner earlier this year.

Kristen put up this little behind the scenes look at the recording of our song that’s kind of cool. Glad to see the song gaining some attention.

HEALTH NOTES

Over the weekend the first case of a child was confirmed by the CDC.

AI detected a woman’s breast cancer after a routine screening missed it. She said she’s “deeply grateful.”

There’s research from England suggesting that implants made of your blood could repair broken bone.

FUNNY TWEET

A woman tweeted, “I signed up for a zoom workout class that was too advanced so when the instructor said, ‘do a plank’ and bring your knee to the opposite elbow, I did a modified version where I turned off my computer and made pancakes

THANKSGIVING

I think I’m going to pass on White Castle Stuffing in my turkey this Thanksgiving.

That’s right…those little mini-burger folks have a recipe of their own to stuff your bird if you’d like. It’s getting mixed reviews. Not for me…as I don’t eat stuffing of any kind. If it were my choice?  I’d stuff my turkey with mac and cheese.  Just saying.

TURKEY POUNDS

Another reason for skipping the stuffing is it might lower the calorie content for the Turkey Day dinner we’re all about to chow down on. They say on average we will take in 2,092 calories on Thanksgiving Day. And that’s not including the leftovers we’ll eat later. Do what I do. Skip the salad. That will lower your calorie content…a little.

TURKEY MOVIE

There’s an endless supply of great Christmas movies every year. And new one’s are added every season. But…I can’t think of any great THANKSGIVING movies with the exception of one. Planes, Trains and Automobiles. And there are several great Halloween movies. But that’s the only worthwhile Turkey movie I can think of.

I’ll watch it again this year just to hear Steve Martin’s character say to John Candy…

WICKED

That movie is out and is going to do HUGE numbers at the box office. It’s on my list this season. My wife and daughter and I saw the musical years ago and it was really good. Can’t wait to see how the movie compares. My daughter Heather and her husband Casey just saw the movie in Germany where she lives and she tells us that Ariana Grande is terrific in the role of Glinda the “Good Witch”.

SPEAKING OF DAUGHTER

Just a Dad bragging…but check out this little handmade album my daughter made displaying it at one of the great Christmas markets in Germany.

Me? I can’t make a good fried egg…much less something like this with so much detail.

SOUTHERN STATES

Now this video is really funny. Especially if you're from the south. This guy lists the MOST southern states in a very funny way. I especially love his diss on my favorite dish...Skyline Chili.

SPEAKING OF LISTS

Billboard just released their newest list of “Top 100 Country Stars Of All Time”. How many in the Top 10 can you guess?

10…Merle Haggard

9…. George Strait

8…. Charley Pride

7…. Garth Brooks

6…. George Jones

5…. Hank Williams Sr

4…. Loretta Lynn

3…. Willie Nelson

2…. Johnny Cash

1…. Dolly Parton

Pretty good list.

FUNNY

Thank you to my buddy Randy Brooks for that one…the writer of “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer”.

NYC DUDE!

Since New York City legalized the sale of pot…they’ve sold over a BILLION dollars’ worth of it. It became legal in 2021…so in just three years…a lot of New Yorkers have gotten high. Now I’m wondering how many brownies have been sold in that same period of time.

TODAY

A non-busy week because of it being Thanksgiving week. Today being the first of those non-busy days.

Have a great Monday!

A Bluebird Show...New Album In The Mail...An Interview With An Old Friend

BILL BLOG Tuesday November 26, 2024   Tuesday morning…couple days away from carving the turkey. 50 for the high today here in Music City…bracing for some cold weather on the way.   YESTERDAY I had nothing musical on the calendar yesterday…but had one of those “had to do” things that took up a chunk of my day. Sometimes you can’t control a calendar…the calendar controls you and give you no choice. But there was some good news that came rolling in.   NEW SHOW On Tuesday January 28 I’ll be hosting a songwriter round at the world famous Bluebird Café. And the great part about this news is that I’m going to be able to add my longtime friend Brent Burns to this show…something that’s been a bucket list item for him.   And I’m so glad that I’m the one who will get to make this happen for him. EVERY songwriter wants to play the Bluebird. And somehow, even though my friend lived in Nashville and wrote very seriously for a long while, he ne...

Trio of Writers...Post CMA...Alligator Bread

BILL BLOG Friday November 22, 2024   Friday…the weekend be here! Little chillier going into the weekend with a high of just 49 today and the low tonight will dip down to 37.   YESTERDAY I rhymed with two friends yesterday Rick Lang and Kristy Cox . Though I have written with both many times, and each of them have recorded songs I’ve written with them, it was the first time the three of us sat down together. And yesterday we wrote a gospel song idea that Rick brought with him…pretty much an entire chorus.      I was able to share with Rick that I heard one of our songs “ Church Bells A Ringin ” that’s on the Blue Collar Gospel Album-Songs of Rick Lang on Sirius-XM on the way to our appointment sung by Danny Paisley and a group of great harmony singers. That was pretty cool.     And we got to celebrate with Kristy for her album “Let It Burn” that’s up for a couple of big Golden Guitar Awards this year including Best Albu...

Turkey Day...Road Schedule...No Degree Jobs

BILL BLOG Friday November 29, 2024   Happy Friday! 32 degrees right now with a high in Nashville today of 43 before dipping to a cold 25 later this evening. Time to put the trap door up. YESTERDAY Anyone else still in a turkey coma after yesterday? My wife and I sat at a long Turkey table with the Scott family and some great friends. We could not have been in better company so thank you Chris & Hillary and Lang and Linda for inviting us.   We certainly missed seeing our daughter Heather again this year and her husband Casey who are stationed overseas with the Army right now. But we were surrounded by people we love.  I hope each of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day as well.    SONG OF THE DAY Today I’m sharing a song I wrote with Paul Bogart about his youngest daughter Gentry . Paul lives out in Oklahoma…a real deal cowboy George Strait singing son of a gun. The two of us wrote a song for both of his sons that he recorded...
