Another “Hump Day” is in front of us. Sunshine and warm with a high of 85 here today.
YESTERDAY
I spent some time writing with my east coast friend Rick Lang online. Rick is celebrating the success of his album “Blue Collar Gospel” that we have a couple of songs on including the title track.
One of the songs on his album that features all these great bluegrass singers and bands is “Just Beyond” that I did not write. Rick wrote this with my friend Mike Richards who writes at my publishing company Billy Blue. This song has a great chance of winning an award this year at the Bluegrass Convention (IBMA) coming up in a few weeks in Raleigh. It features Barry Abernathy, Bradley Walker, John Meador (who hits some incredible high notes in this song) and Tim Raybon. An incredible gospel bluegrass recording produced by my buddy Jerry Salley. The harmonies gave me goosebumps the first time I heard it. And it’s been a HUGE record…on the chart since the day it was released…and it's STILL on the charts. Click the link and check it out. I WISH I had helped write that one!
I am glad to have two songs on the album though that I’m proud of including this song Church Bells A Ringin’.
Yesterday we did add a new song to our growing catalog from an idea Rick had about “Simple Things”. And how the older you get that “simple things” are the things we treasure most. I was happy to jump in on the idea.
CHECK THIS OUT
This evening join me on my friend Brady Seals You Tube Channel as he’s going to interview me.
Usually I interview Brady who’s a former member of Little Texas and Hot Apple Pie and is about to be inducted into the Ohio Country Music Hall of Fame. We’ll be talking about radio some I’m sure…but we’ll also be talking about some of the songs we’ve written together through the years. This should be more fun than allowed so do tune in early this evening if you can.
SONG OF THE DAY
Since I was just talking about Brady…I thought it might be appropriate to share this song we wrote together “Deeper Shade of Blue Collar” written from a title suggested by my wife Kathy one day.
ON THE BEACH
I got his poster you see below promoting a great bluegrass show that I somehow get to be part of at this year’s Pensacola Songwriters Festival. Those names you see are some of the most successful artists and writers in the bluegrass genre. And there I am stuck in the middle with them.
This will be some kind of show looking at the Gulf of Mexico in October. Come join us on the sand if you can.
HEALTH NOTES
A new study finds that consuming 6 additional servings of flavonoid-rich foods a day can lower the risk of dementia, especially for those with high blood pressure, depression and high genetic risk. Think fruits and vegetables.
Scientists in China say they have evidence that metformin (a common diabetes drug) can slow down the brains aging process.
And here’s some eye opener depressing news. Infectious disease experts say that superbugs due to antibiotic resistance could kill 39 million people by the year 2050. (I’ve GOT to stop reading health news!)
WELL…
I’ve never tried Cotton Chicken nor Candy Nuggets…but I’m willing to try.
SPEAKING OF EATING
It’s National Cheeseburger Day. You can get a 50 cent burger at Mickey D’s today if you’re so inclined. And there are burger deals at other places as well. I’ll take my PLAIN please…burger, cheese, bun…that’s it. And every time I try to order a PLAIN burger…the person waiting on me will ask things like, “so you don’t want pickles, or lettuce, or mayo, or ketchup”…and on and on. So I actually order it as “Just burger, cheese, and bun…plain”. And then the order comes out and it’s loaded. Sigh.
And with all of that “plain” rambling I give you the greatest cheeseburger song of all time. Jimmy Buffett likes his with EVERYTHING on it.
AND SPEAKING OF CHEESE
I need one of these!
A mac and cheese scented candle! You can get ya one on Amazon. My wife is going to be surprised when she opens that Prime box.
NO MORE BOWL BURPING
Hard to believe that Tupperware is declaring bankruptcy. If you’re old enough you remember Tupperware parties I’m sure. I grew up in a small church where now and then there would be dinner after the service. I swear that most of the food arrived in Tupperware bowls. Hard to imagine them not being in business.
RIP
We lost two GREAT songwriters over the last couple of days. Both of them are Hall of Famers.
John David Souther who wrote a lot of hits for The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, George Strait and so many others. “New Kid In Town” is one of my all time favorites that he wrote for the Eagles that Vince Gill now sings in the Eagles “live” shows. And John was a great solo artist as well with hits like “You're Only Lonely”. He was 78.
And Billy Edd Wheeler who wrote “Coward of the County” for Kenny Rogers. He wrote songs for Elvis, Cash, The Kingston Trio and on and on. And I remember when I was very young and on the radio playing a song that Billy wrote and sang himself, “The Interstate Is Coming Through My Outhouse”.
Quite the musical loss for sure.
SNAKES…MAN I HATE SNAKES!
In Florida they have those gigantic pythons. So many that they have organized hunts for them to “thin the herd” if you will. The just held the Florida Python Challenge where one snake wrangler got 20 of those gigantic snakes. He won $10,000. He deserves every danged penny as far as I’m concerned. For the record, I don’t think a 10 million dollar prize could entice me to go looking for a danged python. Nope.
BEST INCENTIVE EVER
The Marshall University Football coach is trying to get players to transfer to his program. Marshall plays Ohio State this weekend and the coach just offered any Ohio State player that would be willing to transfer all-you-can-eat biscuits! Where do I sign up coach!?”
QUOTE OF THE DAY
This from Judge Judy. “How do you stay married for 47 years? You get a little hard of hearing. Both of us.”
TODAY
I’m writing with Irene Kelley my bluegrass buddy who was once a major recording artist on MCA records and recorded great songs like this on “O Mexico” that Trisha Yearwood also recorded. She’s the girl in the light blue shirt playing guitar in this new Farm Bureau Insurance commercial that they’re playing a ton here in Tennessee.
Have a great Wednesday.
