Fall Colors...New CD's...Back to Gulf Shores

BILL BLOG

It’s the first Hump Day of November, and we are getting a soaking rain this morning in Nashville. Today’s high will be just 69 degrees. By Saturday, the high will only be 56, with a low of 36 on Saturday night.

I hate it getting dark at 5 pm now. Really hate that. But I don’t mind seeing Tennessee orange right outside my door at this time of year.

YESTERDAY

I had such a fun write with Andrea Pearson yesterday at my publishing company. By the time she walked in, I had a chorus start on a song. She loved it, and we were off and running.

Andrea is a joy to write with, and so talented. I know something good is coming out of the room when we sit down together and yesterday was certainly no exception.

MUSICAL GIFTS

That would be these two CDs.

The head of Billy Blue Records gave me these. I have the song “Telluride” on the Caroline Owens album, and two songs on the Kristy Cox CD, “No Regrets” and “Other Side of the Wine.” Both of these projects are available wherever you purchase your music these days.

Thank you, Caroline, and Kristy for recording these tunes!

SONG OF THE DAY

Yesterday, my friend Linda Davis posted this VIDEO of herself talking about Election Day and a song that I wrote with her and Jerry Salley that she thought was appropriate to share on Election Day, titled “Who We Are.”

It’s just Linda sitting behind the piano, but it’s pretty darned great and reflects accurately how the three of us who wrote the song feel about our country, and “Who We Are.” It’s my choice for the song today.

HEALTH NOTES

Florida health officials have confirmed 485 cases of dengue fever this year, as the Sunshine State grapples with its largest outbreak in decades.

There is research suggesting what some of us have suspected. Shorter days and dark afternoons can trigger depression.

And how about this news from researchers who say that transportation traffic noise can increase heart risk, even if it doesn’t disturb your sleep.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

In the words of MC Hammer, “Can’t Touch That.”

VOTING

Whether your party won or lost, there’s good news for all of us. The “vote for me” unsolicited texts will finally stop! And we’ll start to see more green grass as these will be yanked out of the ground.

One comedian asks, “What’s it called when you keep doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results?

Voting.

DON’T DO THIS!

I’m going to label this picture as, What could go wrong?

CHRISTMAS

For some, it’s here already. One radio station in California is already playing nothing but Christmas music. By now, Mariah Carey is probably wearing them out.

My wife and I are going to decorate a cactus this year instead of a tree in the house, as we’ll be in Arizona celebrating with our daughter and son-in-law. And though we are looking SO forward to this, I’ll miss not having one of these up in our house.

DEAR ABBY

Yes, that column is still going after all these years. Today’s Dear Abby letter started with, “My son-in-law won’t stop sending me cat videos.”

In this part of the country, we’d refer to that son-in-law as “he ain’t right.”

And I have to admit, every time of think or read “Dear Abby” I can’t help but think of this great John Prine SONG.

EXPENSIVE STOOL

A guy in Birmingham is asking $1,000 for a barstool that new country superstar Ella Langley sat on before she was famous playing her songs. “Choosing Texas” has now been the #1 song for a ridiculous 26 weeks in a row.

The stool is up on eBay if you’re interested.

FYI to potential buyers, Ella  does NOT come with the stool.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

From C.S. Lewis:

“Friendship is born when one says to another, ‘What! You too? I thought I was the only one.’”

TODAY

I’ll be online writing with the bluegrass songwriter of the year, Tim Stafford. That puts a lot of pressure on me not to suck.

And then I’m packing for a return trip to Gulf Shores tomorrow morning for the Frank Brown Songwriters Festival with 4 shows starting Friday.

Have a great Wednesday!

The Bluebird Show...Pet Marriage...Tourist Attractions

BILL BLOG Thursday, August 6, 2026   Thursday morning, a little bleary-eyed. We’re back in the heat again today, with a high of 91 expected in Nashville.    I was up late last night, so the Blog is being posted just a little later than normal this morning.     YESTERDAY What a magical night at the Bluebird Café for the 9 pm songwriter show Wil Nance , Mo Pitney, and Brady Seals .      The place was packed, as it always is with folks from far and wide, including a nice couple who made the trip from Alberta, Canada, just to come to the Bluebird Café. And I don’t think they went home disappointed.   Wil Nance kicked us off with the great song he helped write for George Strait, “ Where Have I Been All My Life, ” and also performed his smash hit, “She’s Everything for Brad Paisley .   Curb Recording Artist Mo Pitney sang “ Fiddle Around, ” which he wrote with Wil and a couple of great new tunes. Mo is one of the...
