It’s Friday! Getting ready to leave New Mexico for Midland, Texas.
A little shorter Blog today because the wheels are getting ready to roll.
88 is going to be the high temperature here in Ruidoso, New Mexico, but it will be 98 in Midland. Meanwhile, back home in Nashville, there were school closures because of the heat hovering around 110 yesterday.
YESTERDAY
It was show day, or rather show night, here in New Mexico. Our Evening in the Round trio loaded into the Spencer Theater at 1 pm for an 8 pm show last night.
The first half of our show last night was with a full band, so we rehearsed the old classic country songs we were each going to sing. For me, that was “Tiger by the Tail,” “Mama’s Don’t Let Your Cowboys,” and the Merle Haggard song, “You Take Me for Granted.”
I can’t tell you how much fun it was to sing those classic country songs in front of the amazing band we brought with us to New Mexico. Such a pleasure. And we had a big house, and folks who were so receptive. My friend Lang Scott killed em’ with the Kenny Rogers song “Lady,” and Linda was right in her Texas country roots element, singing the old Ray Price classic “Burning Memories.”
And we closed the show with Lang and Linda singing the Dolly-Kenny classic “Islands in the Stream.”
Such a great time at one of my very favorite theaters in the entire country. Thank you to the band, management, catering, front office- EVERYONE was so good at their jobs. They made our job so enjoyable and easy. Can’t wait to come back!

To my Missouri friend Becky Denton, as her new song ‘Barefootin’ is now sitting at #5 on this chart.
Hard to see, I know, but it’s there. This is the song I wrote with Becky a few years ago that’s out as her new summertime single. And what’s really cool is that Dolly, Becky’s hero, is sitting at #1 on this chart. Love it.

SONG OF THE DAY
We’re hearing that Joe Nichols has recorded a song that I’m a writer on. The song is titled “Keeping It Real” which I wrote with 3 other friends, Brian White, Jason Severs, and Nathan Woodward. That song will be on his new album, out before the end of the year…we hope!
This will be the second song that Joe has recorded of mine. Let’s make the first one our “Song of the Day”. Here’s the song that was a title track of one of his albums, "Crickets."

PRICES KEEP GOING UP
Mortgage rates keep going up. 6.71% now, the highest in a year. But at least gas prices and grocery prices are through the roof, right?
Gas is over 4 bucks a gallon out here in New Mexico, where I’m at right now.

A self-driving car with no steering wheel. I’ve ridden in self-driving cars, but the two I rode in had steering wheels. Talk about having trust.

College football games have started. I’m betting that the College GameDay show on ESPN will be talking about a judge’s ruling allowing former NFL players to play college ball again, in some cases. It’s not your Mama’s football game anymore y’all.

TODAY
Linda Davis, Lang Scott, and I have about a 5-hour drive to Midland, Texas, where we will play at the Wagner-Noel Center this evening.
Another stunning theater.
Something a little different tonight. The audience will sit on the stage with us, and we’ll play in a true “round,” turning this big theater into an intimate living room.
With gas prices going through the roof, diesel is at an all-time high at $5.85 a gallon; I’m pretty sure “The Dipstick Song” will go over well tonight.
Should be fun. Then Saturday morning, we make a two-day drive back home to Nashville.
