A Limo Party...New Shows...Fair Season

BILL BLOG

Friday, August 14, 2026

Yep, we made it to Friday! A 96 high with humidity today in Nashville. And we thought July was hot.

YESTERDAY

Right at noon yesterday, I jumped into this Hummer limousine.

A couple of other songwriters and some industry folks were driven around Nashville for as long as it took to hear my friend “Jenny Tolman’s” brand new album, out in a couple of weeks.

I have a song on this project that I wrote with Jenny and her producer-musician husband Dave Brainard that was written about Jenny’s mom, Kathy, who grew up in California. The song is titled “My California Girl,” and I’m certainly proud that Dave & Jenny invited me to write that particular song with them. What a great lifetime present for Jenny’s mom.

Jenny’s father Steve was born and raised in Boston. “A California girl, met a Massachusetts man,” is part of the song, and the two of them married and had a baby girl named Jenny who was born and raised here in Nashville. And that explains the album title, “Music City Mutt.

So we rode around Music City, and Dave Brainard played us every song on the album.

A very cool and unique way to promote the album, and thank a lot of folks associated with it. Happy to be one of those riding in the limo.

TWO NEW SHOWS

On Friday, September 8, I’m playing a big Parrot Head event right on the beach in Biloxi with my friend Brent Burns. A 5 pm show that day.

SEPTEMBER 9

We just added another show together while I’m down there on that Thursday night at Tuscany Pizza & Grill in Gulf Shores, Alabama at 6 pm.

These are always VERY funny shows. The show will be held in a private room, with a cover charge. Great Italian food and wine.

And then the two of us for the show.

OCTOBER 22

I’ll be playing a VIP show the morning of October 22 at MOTM, “Meeting of the Minds”, that huge Parrot Head Festival in Gulf Shores. Show time for that is 10:45.

This great Festival runs October 22-25, and I’ll be adding some other shows later. I’m hoping I’ll get to meet this noisy friend I hung out with last year at the festival.

SONG OF THE DAY

I’m choosing “If That’s What Love Was,” which I wrote with Jerry Salley and was recorded by an Australian rancher and traditional country singer by the name of Roo Arcus. The song made it all the way to #2 on the big Australian Country Chart the year it was released. Fun, up-tempo, and certainly country.

HEALTH NOTES

The world’s most dangerous animal kills 600,000 a year. And no, I had no clue which animal that is. Turns out, it’s the mosquito. Malaria. Children in sub-Saharan Africa bear the brunt.

A study finds that wait times for cancer surgeries are getting longer and longer. In fact, it hit a 10-year high for wait times.

Health officials urge caution to beachgoers following a rise in severe, rare bacterial infections tied to coastal waters this summer.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Placement is everything, folks.

WHO IS LANDING THE PLANES?

A lot of gamers apparently. Air traffic controllers are hard to come by. There’s been a shortage for a long time. The FAA ran a marketing campaign asking “gamers” to apply.

And they hired 2,000 of them. So, a young person who was just playing Grand Auto Theft could now be in your air traffic tower helping to land your plane. Wonder if they’d be interested in me since I used to play Pac-Man and Donkey Kong?

FYI…the median salary for an air traffic controller is $145,000 annually.

THEM AND US

The head of Disney, Bob Iger, and a young business guy, Josh Kushner, just bought the LA Lakers basketball franchise. For just 12 BILLION dollars. Wow.

I think I might have just enough money to go half in on a pickleball team. Maybe.

Pickleball teams go to great lengths to name their themselves. Sort of like folks naming their bowling teams.

Kind of a Big Dill

Fickle Pickle

Ace Holes

Couch Potatoes

And…Epic Failures. All team names for those that like to “pickle.”

COLT FORD

The country-artist-rapper was in a bus accident in Germany that broke his shoulder. And he had to be removed through the windshield of his bus.

The good news is he’s going to be fine.

Colt did a rap section on the parody song “Luke Bryan” that I wrote with Cledus T. Judd that Cledus recorded; that’s pretty cool. Check that out by hitting the link.

ON THE TRAIL

My funny friend Randy Brooks, writer of “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer,” posted this “funny” on his Facebook recently. Made me laugh.

FAIR TIME

Our Tennessee State Fair, located not too far from where we live, is underway. And I’m struggling trying to decide which of these I want to see most.

The log sawing.

The pig racing.

Or…the “chicken choking”.

Three solid choices.

GIVE ME GOOSEBUMPS…EVERYTIME

Last night’s Field of Dreams Major League baseball game was on Netflix. I don’t have Netflix, so I did not get to see this. But here is the OPENING of that game, narrated by Kevin Costner, who of course starred in my favorite all-time movie. The players walking out of that cornfield get me every time. And last night, it was 26 Hall of Famers walking out.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

From the late comedian Henny Youngman.

If you’re going to do something tonight that you’ll be sorry for tomorrow morning, sleep late.”

TODAY

I’ve got a wide-open weekend, and that includes today, as a teaching session I was scheduled to give online was cancelled. I’ll make good use of the time by trying to put my feet up, as starting next weekend and through November, I’m going to be on the road a bunch. The first show is next weekend with Linda Davis and Lang Scott over in Mountain City, Tennessee.

Have a great weekend!
