Another Monday morning is on us. A hot week ahead of us here in Nashville, with the temperature hovering in the mid-90s all week.
It’s so hot, one might have to buy one of these bad boys.
THE WEEKEND
Saturday, my wife Kathy had a book signing event at the Buchanan Log House, one of those places with a lot of southern history attached. Cool place.
There were maybe 15 or so authors all selling their own books in different rooms in the cabin. Kathy had a nice turnout of friends, and folks interested in her book “Subtle Frequency.”
And, she signed several of them, some folks buying them for friends on their Christmas gift list who are avid readers.
A good day of meeting folks, shaking hands, and selling some books.
MEANWHILE
My daughter Heather shared some beautiful pictures of a dress she made, modeling it at the San Diego Zoo over the weekend as she and her husband Casey drove there from their new home in Yuma, Arizona.
But she also posted this picture of an Arizona bug they did battle with yesterday evening. It was a pretty funny conversation on the phone.
Yep, she’s trying to get comfortable with the snakes, and the scorpions and whatever that thing is that are part of Arizona living.
MOON SHINES ON THE STILL
The Dailey & Vincent song, “Moon Shines on the Still,” that I wrote with my North Carolina bluegrass buddy Laura Leigh Jones was the 3rd most played song for an entire month according to this Bluegrass Americana Chart.
Gosh. It’s been a number one song, and still at the top of the chart after all these weeks. It’s on the new Dailey and Vincent album, available on vinyl even, and available for purchase anywhere you buy music. AND…it’s racked in Cracker Barrel Stores!
My thanks for this song go to my co-writer Laura Leigh, who brought the idea to the songwriting table one day. And thank you to Robert Filhart, who pitched the song to the boys.
SONG OF THE DAY
My young “country” singing friend Spencer Hatcher and his record label have just released the official VIDEO for his summer single, “Hot Weather, Cold Beer,” that I wrote with him, his younger brother Connor, and my long-time co-writing friend Steve Dean. HEALTH NOTES
A study suggests that COVID may reactivate dormant viruses in the bodies of otherwise healthy people.
The Red Cross is in the midst of its second-ever blood supply crisis.
A recent study concludes that older adults who listen to or play music have a significantly lower chance of developing dementia—a 39% lower chance, to be exact. Crank up the music, folks.
SPEAKING OF GIVING BLOOD
I’m admittedly a little squeamish around blood. So giving blood was not something on my agenda. But I did…once.
I was doing the morning show for WSM-FM radio at the time from the Opryland Hotel. We were getting ready to do a remote broadcast one morning to encourage folks to come out and give blood for the Red Cross. My producer at the time, Richard Bachschmidt, called me out on air, declaring he was giving blood and that I was a chicken if I did not. And this went on for about a week on the air before I finally gave in and said I would give a pint as well.
The truth is, I was afraid I might pass out because of being queasy about blood. Heck, when I was a teenager, I cut open a bag of potatoes at a grocery store I was working at, and sliced my thumb. Blood showed up, and the next thing I know, I’m waking up on the pavement behind that grocery store after passing out.
So, I was NOT looking forward to it.
The day comes, and we are broadcasting from a remote unit at a local shopping mall where the Red Cross was set up for blood donors. My turn comes; I turn the radio show over to my producer and go in and give blood with no issues.
I then go back and tell my producer it’s his turn. He goes in, gives blood, comes out (on a VERY hot summer day in Nashville), and as I stick a microphone in his face so that he can describe the experience, I swear to you, his eyes rolled into the back of his head, and down he went. Out like a light.
When he came to, guess who made fun of him? Uh huh. Payback.
DUCK AND PLAY
I’m not sure what’s going on with some concert fans, but some are throwing things at the stage, and some of the objects are hitting the entertainers. That happened this weekend to Billy Strings as he got walloped in the head with an object…a lighter, they think. He used some very “choice” words about the person from the stage that I won’t print here…you can look those up.
But then he showed his sense of humor when he played the rest of his set wearing some protective gear.
I'm not sure what would make a person throw anything at an entertainer on stage. I'm sure alcohol could be one reason. The sad part is, there is no 12 step program for morons.

SPEAKING OF DRINKING
How about the divers who found a 162-year-old bottle of Guinness in a shipwreck off the English Channel?
And, they think it might STILL be drinkable. No wonder they call it Guinness STOUT.

U-Haul just revealed what states Baby Boomers are moving to the most. The top 5 states are:
5…Alabama
4…Arizona
3…Florida
2…North Carolina
And South Carolina is the number 1.
TURN A PAGE OR TWO
Startling. More than half of New York’s 3rd through 5th graders have failed reading proficiency tests. I can only figure that fewer parents are saying, “Do your homework.”

TODAY
I’m back with young Angus Gill today to write. Angus is knee-deep in a very special tribute album to the great guitar player James Burton, who played for Elvis and John Denver. A “who’s who” of music celebrities have already contributed their talents, with more to come, and Angus is the producer. Heck, he had the great Delbert McClinton with him last week laying down a part.
Looking forward to hearing the latest on that great project today, as well as the writing session.
