Beachy Christmas Song...Righteous...Wienermobile

BILL BLOG

Friday, July 31, 2026

It’s Friday, AND the end of July is here. Hard to believe. 89-degree high for the last day of July here in Music City.

YESTERDAY

My Missouri friends Becky Denton and her husband Will were in town and requested a writing session.

Becky has dipped her toes a little bit into the Trop Rock world and is thinking of recording a few “beachy” Christmas songs, and brought a great title with her. So it was Christmas in the writing room yesterday.

Will and Becky live up in Paris, Missouri, but they do get to Nashville now and then, and I’m glad they reached out for a get-together yesterday.

A Christmas song in July. Go figure!

PLAY BALL!

Last night I got out to the ballpark to catch a Nashville Sounds baseball game. The temperature dropped just enough to make it comfortable to sit in the stands. Hard to beat an evening watching the boys of summer do their thing.

The good guys lost last night to Charlotte.

SONG OF THE DAY

Since I wrote with Becky Denton yesterday, here’s a beach song the two of us wrote that she recorded, “Two Bags, One Beach,” that got a little airplay on some Trop Rock radio stations. This will make you want to pack your bags for a beach trip for sure.

HEALTH NOTES

Data from the Congo shows that Ebola cases kill over 1,500 people during the fastest-growing outbreak.

Cases of cyclosporiasis here in Tennessee are increasing according to the CDC. And it’s the same for most states. Great. I’m still not eating lettuce.

A new study finds that older adults taking 5 or more prescription drugs face a higher risk of death.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Thank you to whoever did this!

MOST PLAYED SONG OF THE 20TH CENTURY

Could you guess what that might be? Me neither. But I do love this song. The song is the classic Righteous Brothers song, “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling.”

I still have that 45 RPM that I bought when I was young somewhere. I wore it out. And I’ll bet a lot of you did as well.

One of those songs you never get tired of hearing.

CHECK OUT THE SHRUB

That’s a police officer in New Jersey who issued over 70 citations for “distracted driving.” Fining folks with their head in their cellphones instead of having their eyes on the road. It’s a law they are enforcing in New Jersey. Keep your eye out for the shrubs.

SAFEST STATES

US News just released that list. Here’s their 5 safest.

5…Connecticut

4…Rhode Island

3…Idaho

2…Maine

And, according to them, the SAFEST state in the country is New Hampshire.

HAD TO HAPPEN

In Nantucket, a shop owner hung this sign.

Take your influence and go elsewhere.

BUYER BEWARE

This house is listed on Zillow for $215,280. The home is located in Colorado. But one should read the fine print if they’re interested in buying this one.

The listing states that any buyer is not allowed to inspect the home before purchase, AND the new buyer is responsible for removing the current resident. What? Pretty sure that’s a first in the real estate business.

And I guess that the current resident is this guy.

Good luck trying to get rid of him.

SHARKS

There sure seems to be more shark attacks than ever. To combat that, many beaches, here and abroad, are now using drones to help keep an eye out for them.

Good idea. Gives the lifeguards a heads-up to warn swimmers to stay out of the water.

HAPPY OSCAR MEYER BIRTHDAY

Happy Birthday to the Wienermobile. The first one was built on this date in 1936.

I’ve been in one. They’re pretty cool. The drivers, who are called “hotdoggers,” make about $35,000 a year. But who wouldn’t love to drive a hot dog?

When I was on the air doing the morning show in Milwaukee at WMIL Radio, we teamed with Oscar Mayer, and held a contest where a young winner would be picked up by the Wienermobile and driven to school that morning. My producer rode shotgun in the Wienermobile and gave us a “live” play-by-play of that. The kid got quite the reception when he pulled up to his school that day.

And now they race every year at the Indy 500!

QUOTE OF THE DAY

From Henry David Thoreau:

Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it.”

TODAY

I’m in a writing room with Aussie friend Angus Gill, who is getting ready to record a project for a young artist named Brady Harris. So our mission is to try and write something he’ll like enough to include on his upcoming album. Here’s to that.

Have a great weekend!
