New Shows...A Christmas Movie...Baseball Playoffs

BILL BLOG

Tuesday September 30, 2025

And here it is…the last day of September. Tuesday. Warm today in Nashville with a high of 86.

YESTERDAY

I had the day off. Which is funny, because I don’t consider what I do work. In reality, it’s kind of like I have every day off. And now that I think about it, I highly recommend it. It’s good non-work if you can get it.

SHOWS

I did add a couple of new shows to my calendar yesterday. The first of those will be with my long-time beach-bum buddy, Brent Burns. He and I will play a show at Lulu’s down in Gulf Shores as part of his songwriter’s week that he’s hosted several years for MOTM…”Meeting of the Minds.”

That’s the big Parrot Head party that I’m the co-emcee of again this year.

That 45-minute show will be on Friday, October 24. And those are always really fun shows. Come see us if you can.

ON THE RADIO

Thursday evening, October 9, I’ll be a guest of my friend Joe Rucker on his radio show called Front Porch Pickin’ on WLJI Radio in Shelbyville, Tennessee, which is about 50 miles outside of Nashville.

And yes, I’ll be doing some picking and singing and talking about songwriting, radio, comedy, and whatever else Joe wants to get into. You can listen online HERE if you’d like.

CHRISTMAS MOVIE

I’m blessed to have the title song in an upcoming independent movie titled “Music City Mistletoe” that will have a red-carpet premier showing here in Nashville on Monday night October 13.  Here’s the TRAILER for this movie, produced by a songwriter friend, Shantell Ogden.

I’ll get to walk the red carpet and then be one of the first to see this Christmas movie. Christmas…already!

SONG OF THE DAY

This one is from my young friend Alex Miller, who has recorded three of my songs and is about to release a 4th on his upcoming new album. The two of us wrote “Ain't Every Saying Never" one morning with my talented keyboard-playing son of a gun of a friend, Josh Shilling, who is out on the road playing keys with Wynonna and other major stars.

And just to show you how crazy good Josh is, this is a VIDEO of him singing with the group Mountain Heart on the song “Whipping Post”. It’s an amazing performance from Josh, both vocally and musically, as he’s pounding the keys. My publisher hooked me up to write with Josh years ago, when I did not know who he was. The video was the one I found of him, and I remember my mouth dropping open at his performance. The answer was a LOUD yes, I want to write with him!

HEALTH NOTES

The USDA has issued a health alert for frozen meats sold at Walmart and Trader Joe’s, which are linked to a deadly listeria outbreak.

Hillshire Brands just pulled 58 million pounds of corn dog and sausage-on—a-stick products after wood pieces were discovered in the batter.

An experimental medication made from marijuana successfully reduced back pain in a new study.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

I give…what do they eat?

HAD TO HAPPEN

In San Francisco, police officers pulled over a car for making an illegal U-turn. They could not write a ticket because it was a driverless Waymo taxi. The vehicle had to be reprogrammed.

Hard to pull a driver out of a car to take a sobriety test when there is NO driver.

ALSO IN SAN FRANCISCO

There’s a woman who is charging $30,000 to help you name your baby. True. And folks with money are keeping her busy. Last year, the woman named 100 babies. You can do the math.

Send me half of that and I’ll be happy to take a crack at naming your baby for you. Gladly.

TODAY’S QUOTE

From comedian Steven Wright:

I went to a place that serves ‘breakfast at any time’. So I ordered French Toast during the Renaissance.”

TODAY

I’m off to write with David Morris, who, at one time, was a White House correspondent. These days, he’s spending some of his time driving to Nashville to write bluegrass songs. I’m preparing myself to have to answer some hard questions that he shouts out at me with flashbulbs popping in my face.

And then…the baseball playoffs start today. I’ll be rooting for my Reds against the Dodgers tonight.

Have a great Tuesday!

Pensacola...Writing With A Friend....Happy Memorial Day

BILL BLOG Monday May 26, 2025  And a good Memorial Day Monday morning to you from Pensacola, Florida.   THE WEEKEND Mine started Saturday morning by jumping the car with Steve Dean and making the trip from Nashville down here to beautiful Pensacola for this event with Freedom Sings USA.   The event was held at Warrior Beer Company in Pensacola, owned by veteran Gary Hefner .   We rolled into Pensacola around 5 pm Friday, dropped our bags at the hotel, and then made our way over to the Warrior Beer Company for a little meet and greet with our veterans.   Imagine my surprise when I found out that a long-time friend of mine, Larry Hudson , from nearby Gulf Shores, would be the veteran I would be writing with. More on that in a bit.     After our dinner, our songwriter group got on stage and sang a few songs.   After we wrapped up, we headed to a favorite Irish Pub, “McGuire’s,” and closed out the ...

New Song Recorded...Lulu...Book On The Way

BILL BLOG Friday April 25, 2025   Here comes the weekend. It’s Friday once again. A high of 71 today with more rain on the way.   YESTERDAY I wrote with young Taylon Hope for the first time in a long while. Taylon is now a Sophomore at Belmont, University here in Nashville, and she’s chasing her musical dreams. We were to write in person and then one of her professors scheduled a test that would have conflicted so we wrote online instead and created a fun song for her that will be something she can add to her set list when she’s out performing “live”.   I’m rooting for some of her dreams to come true as I am so many other young talents in this crazy creative town.   BURN ME DOWN An American Idol contestant from a year ago, Kennedy Reid reached out to me a few months ago through a producer friers asking for songs for consideration for an album she was going to record. I sent three or 4 songs and ,she recorded one of those that I w...

Home Again...Hamburger Day...Dollywood

BILL BLOG Wednesday May 28, 2025   Wednesday morning, and I’m back home in Nashville. Sunshine with a high of just 79 here in Nashville today.   YESTERDAY A long drive home from Pensacola from our Freedom Sings USA songwriters retreat with our veterans. 2 traffic jams with detours, and one last traffic jam as I was 5 miles away. So, a normal 7 to 8 hour drive took 9 to get home this time. But we made it safe and sound with a bag full of great memories from the Memorial Day weekend, honoring those who gave so much. And what a pleasure it was getting to write with my friend and Viet Nam veteran Larry Hudson who had quite the story to tell that we turned into a song.   NEXT UP Our next Freedom Sings USA weekend will be in the small town of Heyworth, Illinois June 18 and 19. We were there last year, and it seemed like the entire town showed up on the night all the writers performed those songs we wrote with their veterans. We are certainl...
