Studio Day...On The Charts...Best Sport Movie

BILL BLOG

Tuesday August 26, 2025

Tuesday morning, and we’re getting closer to the end of August…already. The temperatures are cooler. As I begin the blog early this Tuesday morning, it’s just 53 degrees. We’ll hit a high of 80 today in Nashville with sunshine.

YESTERDAY

I spent some time in the recording studio with Angus Gill, singing background vocals on a song we wrote for a young female artist, which will be part of a six-song EP she will release soon. Angus has moved over to the States now and is producing some American artists after producing a long list of hitmakers in Australia. Talented young man for sure. And it’s always fun working with him in any creative way. He had me singing some bass parts, lead parts, and harmony parts on this song titled “I Don’t Miss You Much”. Fun couple of hours.

A LITTLE CHART ACTION

I was happy to see the song “Telluride” land in the #5 spot on this chart on its first official week out from Caroline Owens, a song that I wrote with Andrea Pearson.

Caroline is one of the young bluegrass stars who's already making a lot of noise and is going to have a great career…no doubt.

And she’s become one of my favorite artists to write songs with as well. Congrats to her, Andrea, Jerry Salley, who produced this great record, and the musicians who helped make this such a great record.

SONG OF THE DAY

I’m sharing another song that Brent Burns recorded that we wrote together about living your life fully before it’s too late. It’s a story song titled “Better Live It Up”. (Before they put you down). I try to remind myself to do just that.

HEALTH NOTES

About 2,000 cases of 7Up Sugar Tropical Soda were recalled in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia because cans labeled “Zero Sugar” were found to contain a full-sugar product. Doh!

A study suggests that exercise rewires your brain to fight heart disease.

The Chinese are developing a robot with an artificial womb that could give birth to humans by next year. (So much for Lamaze classes)

BEST SPORTS MOVIES

This list comes from the publication FILM. I’m a big sports movie fan, so I was interested to see their choices. They listed 15; here are their Top 5 Sports Movies of All Time.

5…Field of Dreams (My number 1 choice always for best) Greatest speech ever about the game from actor James Earl Jones

4…Warrior (an MMA movie I’ve not seen)

3…Raging Bull

2…Bull Durham

1…Rocky… the best of all time, according to them.

My top 5 would include sports movies I’ve watched multiple times. So…Invincible, Rookie, Miracle, and Rocky would probably round out my personal top 5 choices.

THROW A MATER

The annual tomato fight in Spain is tomorrow. People throwing hundreds of tomatoes at each other in Bunol, Spain. And for the 80th consecutive year, the streets, walls, and people will be covered in red.

Or in the words of the late John Belushi.

Spain may have the two weirdest events of any country when you consider they have this tomato fight AND the “Running of the Bulls” every year.

MORE DRONES

In Florida, they are testing armed drones in several school districts that could help neutralize school shooters.

It’s good that we have technology that can help, but sad that we have to.

HERE COMES THE EXPENSIVE BRIDE

Weddings ain’t cheap, y’all. The average cost of a wedding in DC is now $70,625. That’s the most expensive. Here in Tennessee, it’s quite a bit cheaper. $28,000. And in my home state of Missouri, cheaper yet. Just $27,000.

Heck. If you want to really save money, get married by Elvis in Las Vegas. Cheap. And you get a nice scarf to take home as a souvenir.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Florida Woman Arrested For Unlicensed Dental Work…Allegedly Used Superglue On Victims’ Teeth.(It should be an "open and shut" case for the prosecution.)

TODAY

I’m off to write with Andrea Pearson for the first time in a bit. Andrea has been back home up in Vancouver with her two little girls, Mom, and sister, helping to restore a place the family owns up there that she loves. She’s recording a song about that we wrote together after she told me about this special place. Andrea has been in the recording studio with it, and I’m hoping I’ll get a “sneak” listen to it today.

Have a great Tuesday!

Friends Honored...Father's Day...Freedom Sings USA Trip

BILL BLOG Monday June 16, 2025   Another Monday has rolled around. And it’s a packing day for me with a road trip tomorrow to Illinois. More on that at the end of today’s Blog.   We will hit 85 for a high today in Nashville.   Meanwhile, over the weekend, the National Weather Service issued the “first-ever” heat warning for Alaska.   THE WEEKEND Friday morning, I wrote a new song with my friend Rick Lang , who was in town for a week’s worth of songwriting. Rick lives out in New Hampshire, but drives to Nashville at least once a month to write. He always brings great song ideas with him, and we wrote one of those Friday morning.  His “Blue Collar Gospel” album, “Songs of Rick Lang” has done very well for Billy Blue Records. I was blessed to be a writer on the title track that was recorded by our friend Jerry Salley with the Oak Ridge Boys .     And he’s working towards another full album project that will be kind of un...

ACM Awards Show...Frank Brown Songwriters Festival...Mother's Day Weekend

BILL BLOG Friday May 9, 2025  Here we go sneaking into a weekend. It’s Friday. Just 71 for the high today in Nashville.   YESTERDAY My Thursday morning started online writing a new up-tempo bluegrass song with Troy Engle in Pennsylvania. Troy plays every instrument that has strings on it, sings, writes, produces…not much he can’t do musically. When he lived in Nashville, he hung out a lot with Tom T Hall , played on numerous recording sessions, and was out on the road playing some instrument with the likes of Eric Church , The Isaacs and a long list of country stars.   But several years ago, Troy moved back to PA with his family and plays some shows up there with his family band, but still does a lot of recording work from home. He told me yesterday that his daughter may enroll at a University in Nashville next year and that might bring him back to Music City. It would be great to have him here and get to work him in person more.   ...

New Song Recorded...Lulu...Book On The Way

BILL BLOG Friday April 25, 2025   Here comes the weekend. It’s Friday once again. A high of 71 today with more rain on the way.   YESTERDAY I wrote with young Taylon Hope for the first time in a long while. Taylon is now a Sophomore at Belmont, University here in Nashville, and she’s chasing her musical dreams. We were to write in person and then one of her professors scheduled a test that would have conflicted so we wrote online instead and created a fun song for her that will be something she can add to her set list when she’s out performing “live”.   I’m rooting for some of her dreams to come true as I am so many other young talents in this crazy creative town.   BURN ME DOWN An American Idol contestant from a year ago, Kennedy Reid reached out to me a few months ago through a producer friers asking for songs for consideration for an album she was going to record. I sent three or 4 songs and ,she recorded one of those that I w...
