Quirky Tune...Yellow Melon...Kracker Barrel

BILL BLOG

Monday August 25, 2025

Hello Monday. A little cooler this week in Nashville! High of 88 today, and no 90-degree days all week. We’ll take it.

Meanwhile, South Carolina had a “swarm” of earthquakes over the weekend. At least 7 were recorded registering 1.3 to 3.0 on the old Richter. Admittedly, I know nothing about seismic anything. But I know a “swarm” of anything is never good.

THE WEEKEND

Friday morning wrote a fun “quirky” tune with Angus Gill and Wil Nance, the first time the three of us have rhymed together. Angus brought the idea and wanted to write something a little off the well-worn path for his next album, which he’s getting ready to record.

Think along the lines of “Red Solo Cup” by Toby Keith, and you’ll have a little feel for the direction the song went. I love writing left of center, as most of you know, and Wil’s really good at that as well. It was a really fun day inside Wil’s writing cabin.

Can’t wait to hear the finished product after Angus records the song.

A YELLER MELON

Over the weekend, I made a little grocery run and by mistake, came home with a “yellow” watermelon. Now, I grew up with a watermelon patch in Missouri. I’ve eaten my share of it. But until yesterday, I somehow had never seen or eaten a yellow watermelon. Neither had my wife. But, we both liked it. Still sweet, don’t like it AS much as red, but pretty danged good. Where have I been?

It was like a banana got together with a melon…and look what was born.

FASHION

My daughter Heather has gotten into making fashion big time. She’s working some with folks who design overseas and turning a few heads. This is her standing in front of the botanical garden near where she lives in Germany, wearing her latest creation.

I know…just a Dad bragging here a little bit. Again.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

Yesterday, two of my very dearest friends, Lang Scott and Linda Davis, celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary.

They have the kind of union all of us wish to have in our own marriages, and I am SO blessed to have these two in my life. We have traveled a lot of miles together across the country playing music, and it’s something I always look forward to. Packing my bags with them, traveling together, and sharing laughs and music.

Couldn’t love two folks more. Happy Anniversary.

Our next show together will be in Toccoa, Georgia at the historic Ritz Theatre on November 7. Our second appearance there. 7 pm show for our "Evening in the Round" trio.

SONG OF THE DAY

I posted a little song about the change of logo at Cracker Barrel on Friday morning on my socials, and it apparently hit a “hell yeah” nerve with my followers. The change of logo has NOT been a big hit. With that, I thought I’d share a clip of my “Cracker Barrel” ditty and make it our song for today.

FYI...I still think Uncle Kracker should take advantage of what's going on and open up an "Uncle Kracker Barrel" store.

HEALTH NOTES

In Nashville, Doctors are urging Nashville residents to get vaccinated due to rising COVID-19 cases and the emergence of new strains, particularly the XFG variant that’s spreading.

Concerning. A report claims that colon cancer may be missed as doctors rely on AI.

A new study concludes that Omega-3 may help protect women from Alzheimer’s disease.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Wonder if they’re open?

BEST AND WORST

MSN printed an interesting article listing the best and the worst things about each state in the country.

For my home state of MISSOURI:

Best…giving to charity. St. Louis is one of the most charitable cities in the US.

Worst…Drug use. #1 for drug use.

For the state of TENNESSEE:

Best…Wi-Fi. Internet speed is 50 times faster than the national average. (Although we were without any last week for 24 hours…so it was not very fast then!)

Worst: …Childhood obesity rates. (Lot of biscuits and gravy here, y’all)

If you want to check your state and others…here’s the complete ARTICLE.

FLYING CHIPOTLE

Chipotle is delivering now by air…drone delivery.

Right now, it’s just available in the Dallas area. They’ve partnered with Zipline, and all the customer has to do is download the app, and then they can have their bowl flown to them and dropped off.

So the question now is, how much do you tip the danged drone?

COMEDIAN NATE BARGATZE SAID:

Free range is chicken that’s allowed to roam free. Obviously, not at the store. It’s dead at the store, but they still have a list of his hobbies on the package”.

POWERBALL

Now it’s up to 750 million. So again, now that the odds of winning are impossible, I’ll buy a ticket. I’m a giver. BUT…consider the guy in South Carolina who dropped $399 on 162 Pick 4 lottery tickets and won $811,000. True. And another guy in the same store heard him talking about his lucky numbers of 1-7-3-1 and bought a couple of tickets himself using those same numbers. He won $25,400.

I usually let the machine pick my numbers (it’s done a horrible job), but today I may have to incorporate 1-7-3-1 into my ticket purchase.

JOKE WITH SOME TRUTH

My mind thinks I’m 25. My body thinks my mind is an idiot.”

TODAY’S HEADLINE

Fisherman Bit By Shark While Posing For A Photo. (one more selfie-injury)

TODAY

I’ll be in the studio this morning singing some background vocals for my young producer friend, Angus Gill, for a young Kentucky artist named Kylie Paige. The three of us wrote a song together that she recorded recently, and that’s the song I’ll be singing on a bit today. Should be fun.

Have a great Monday!

Friends Honored...Father's Day...Freedom Sings USA Trip

BILL BLOG Monday June 16, 2025   Another Monday has rolled around. And it’s a packing day for me with a road trip tomorrow to Illinois. More on that at the end of today’s Blog.   We will hit 85 for a high today in Nashville.   Meanwhile, over the weekend, the National Weather Service issued the “first-ever” heat warning for Alaska.   THE WEEKEND Friday morning, I wrote a new song with my friend Rick Lang , who was in town for a week’s worth of songwriting. Rick lives out in New Hampshire, but drives to Nashville at least once a month to write. He always brings great song ideas with him, and we wrote one of those Friday morning.  His “Blue Collar Gospel” album, “Songs of Rick Lang” has done very well for Billy Blue Records. I was blessed to be a writer on the title track that was recorded by our friend Jerry Salley with the Oak Ridge Boys .     And he’s working towards another full album project that will be kind of un...

ACM Awards Show...Frank Brown Songwriters Festival...Mother's Day Weekend

BILL BLOG Friday May 9, 2025  Here we go sneaking into a weekend. It’s Friday. Just 71 for the high today in Nashville.   YESTERDAY My Thursday morning started online writing a new up-tempo bluegrass song with Troy Engle in Pennsylvania. Troy plays every instrument that has strings on it, sings, writes, produces…not much he can’t do musically. When he lived in Nashville, he hung out a lot with Tom T Hall , played on numerous recording sessions, and was out on the road playing some instrument with the likes of Eric Church , The Isaacs and a long list of country stars.   But several years ago, Troy moved back to PA with his family and plays some shows up there with his family band, but still does a lot of recording work from home. He told me yesterday that his daughter may enroll at a University in Nashville next year and that might bring him back to Music City. It would be great to have him here and get to work him in person more.   ...

New Song Recorded...Lulu...Book On The Way

BILL BLOG Friday April 25, 2025   Here comes the weekend. It’s Friday once again. A high of 71 today with more rain on the way.   YESTERDAY I wrote with young Taylon Hope for the first time in a long while. Taylon is now a Sophomore at Belmont, University here in Nashville, and she’s chasing her musical dreams. We were to write in person and then one of her professors scheduled a test that would have conflicted so we wrote online instead and created a fun song for her that will be something she can add to her set list when she’s out performing “live”.   I’m rooting for some of her dreams to come true as I am so many other young talents in this crazy creative town.   BURN ME DOWN An American Idol contestant from a year ago, Kennedy Reid reached out to me a few months ago through a producer friers asking for songs for consideration for an album she was going to record. I sent three or 4 songs and ,she recorded one of those that I w...
