Ready for the weekend? It’s Friday. 78 for the high today in Nashville…comfortable.
RAIN
We haven’t had any since I can remember. There are a lot of brown lawns in Nashville, and residents are being asked to cut back on watering by the folks in charge of water. My lawn is a nice shade of brown as well. The good news is, we’re saving on paying someone to mow the lawn.
YESTERDAY
I sat down with Daryl Mosley and wrote a “smile” song from a little idea I had. Daryl has been the IBMA Songwriter of the Year at least once in his lifetime for Bluegrass Music. He’s a really good and “quick” writer.
More times than not, I’ll bring part of a song to him, and then I just sit quietly, and within less than 30 minutes, he pretty much kicks out the rest of the lyrics we need. Every songwriter is a little different. Some take forever and really beat up a song; others, like Daryl, are the opposite. And I’ve seen as many songs get cut during writing that were written fairly quickly, as opposed to songs that take a much longer time.
Neither is right or wrong; it’s just different depending upon who you are writing with. And the one we wrote yesterday has a smile to it, and I would not be surprised one bit if it doesn’t land on somebody’s record someday.

COMEDY NIGHT
This coming Wednesday night, I’ll be at our local comedy club, Zanie’s, to cheer on my young friend Angus Gill, who is going to make his debut as a stand-up comic. He’s asked me, and one other funny guy in Nashville, to join him.
Should be great fun. Angus has asked me to get up and sing, “Going Ugly Early Tonight,” as well as a funny song the two of us wrote, “She Bought A Grass Skirt, And I Bought A Mower.” How could you NOT want to hear that song?

DOLLY DAY
It is officially “Dolly Day” in Music City on 9/25/26…or “9 to 5.” There will be over 145 events celebrating her and her legacy; many businesses are going pink, there will be multiple performances of her “9 to 5” song, and a big fireworks show this evening.
And with that, I’m going to reshare the song “Like Dolly Did” that I wrote with Adam and Amy Pope that they sang on their couch, posting it on their Facebook Page. It’s had well over 4,500 likes, comments, and almost 1,300 folks or more have shared it. Over 500 have left wonderful heartfelt comments as well. A testament to how much Dolly was, and is, loved.

“Scuba”…not the fish. They hold their noses as they dance, indicating someone or something stinks.
“Crine”…slang for crying. Just “crine.”
“Quiet on the Creek”…popularized by a rapper, it means to keep certain secrets, situations, and more quiet.

I remember saying “Far Out” a lot after John Denver popularized that. I wonder if our teenagers understand that?
MVP BASKETBALL
Bob Pettit, the first-ever NBA MVP, passed away at the age of 93. He was the first basketball player I was a fan of, and here’s the story.
My Dad took me and my brothers to see the St. Louis Hawks play the Philadelphia 76ers at old Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis. Our first NBA game ever. Bob was the big star for the Hawks at the time. Wilt Chamberlain played for the Sixers that night. I can see it right now. And BEFORE that game, the Harlem Globetrotters played, and I got to see Meadow Lark Lemmons do his funny on-court magic.
RIP Mr. Pettit.
STARBUCKS
They are closing 250 stores nationwide today. About 1% of all stores. Uh, there are a LOT of Starbuck stores across the country.
But for the 1% who are affected, they might have a hard time surviving, knowing that they can’t order a “quad split shot, piping extra hot, grande peppermint mocha, with chai and chocolate sauce dribbled on top.”

I’m rhyming today with a former White House News Correspondent, David Morris. David used to write bluegrass songs in his spare time; these days he’s out of the “major” new business and is doing something more enjoyable, a whole lot more.
