A Watch Song...CMA Fest...Baseball Weekend

BILL BLOG

Friday June 6, 2025

Friday morning arrives, and I’m already looking forward to catching some baseball action this weekend. Here in Nashville, rain is on tap again with today’ high being 88. In fact, we have several days of rain in the forecast over the next 10 days or more. It’s been a soggy year in Music City so far.

YESTERDAY

I got two new songs written with my friends Thomm Jutz and Caroline Owens. One is a very commercial song, the other, from an idea Thomm came up with, has a lot of history woven into the song. The kind of stuff Thomm is great at. Thomm writes a fair amount of those kind of songs, especially when he teams up with our mutual friend Tim Stafford. Check out this example titled “Wall Dogs”.

Our song is about “Railroad Approved” watches that conductors wore on trains to help keep accurate time back in the day. Like this Bulova Accutron.

And Caroline has a song, “You’ve Still Got It,” that’s been #1 now for 7 or 8 weeks on a major bluegrass chart, and that’s unheard of these days. The VIDEO for the song just came out a few days ago…check it out.

Great chemistry in the room with these two. The two of them are lovers of guitars and know a lot about them. I get an education that way when we get together.

A truly fun day of writing and conversation.

ONE MORE TEASE

Here’s one more fun tease of the song “Living The American Dream” that I wrote with Katrina Burgoyne that will be out in a few days as her new single release. You can hear and see from this video what a big Shania Twain fan Kat is. She and her husband, who produced the record, certainly captured some of that signature “Shania” sound in this recording.

SONG OF THE DAY

I Found Jesus” is a song I wrote with Mutt Cooper, one of our Freedom Sings USA songwriters who writes with our veterans. Mutt is a veteran himself and works with vets regularly as a therapist in Columbus, Georgia, at Fort Benning.  Though it hasn’t been recorded yet, Mutt put up a “live” version of him singing and playing it. Just click the link above to hear.

HEALTH NOTES

Experts claim that exercising within 4 hours of your bedtime messes with your sleep.

According to the USDA, adult females need to consume between 1,600 and 2,200 calories each day. For males, it should be between 2,200 and 3,000 calories.

Some Ozempic users are saying it has changed their sense of smell and that they now have a greater appreciation of perfumes.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

 Indeed.

CMA FEST

Seems like the whole world is in Nashville as CMA Fest kicked off big time yesterday. Lainey Wilson, Brooks and Dunn, Jason Aldean, Travis Tritt, and others all performed for fans from all over the world.

There are SEVENTEEN celebrity bars on Lower Broadway that will be filled up for the next few days. Those bars were just ranked by fans, and Luke Combs’ bar, “Category 10”, which used to be the Wild Horse Saloon, was rated the overall favorite.

There’s a possibility of severe weather coming, which seems to happen a lot during CMA Fest, so officials are keeping an eye on that.

DONUT DAY!

It is National Donut Day that was established around World War 1 when the Salvation Army would send “Donut Girls” to France to pass out donuts to the troops.

If you look around, you might be able to snag a free donut today. At Krispy Kreme, you get a free one with a beverage purchase.

It’s also National Dairy Month, so I think I might be required to eat donuts AND ice cream. June might be my favorite month!

BASEBALL

The owner of the Chicago White Sox just sold the majority interest in that Major League baseball team to a billionaire with ties to Nashville. That’s got us buzzing about rumors that maybe that team could be moved here. I’m ready to place my season ticket order right now. C’mon!

ROBOT WORLD

Amazon is working toward having 150,000 humanoid robots ready to go to work in a few years. Reportedly, they will be able to walk out of those delivery trucks and drop your package at your front door. They would like to have them on the road by the year 2030.

They also plan on having them replace humans at their massive warehouses…and we have a couple of those near us. The world keeps changing folks.

POLITICAL FODDER

Anyone who knows me knows I hate politics. The best thing about politics to me is that it provides a lot of humor. And it’s a boon for comedy folks. Take the Trump-Musk catfight that’s going on right now. Every comedy writer is saying “thank you”.

Comedian Ginny Hogan wrote, “Today is a huge win for every woman concerned she acted like a psycho during her last breakup.”

Aww…politics.

TODAY’S HEADLINE

Texas Woman Flies Into Violent Rage After Hearing Bagpipes At Local Park. (Who hasn’t done that?!)

TODAY

I’m back at a writing table again with Caroline Owens this morning. And for this write my longtime friend Steve Dean will sit down and rhyme with us.

THE WEEKEND

I’m off to Cincinnati with my song publisher Joe Dan Cornett to see a couple of Cincinnati Reds games along with fellow Billy Blue songwriter Mark Bondurant, who lives in Ohio and snagged the tickets for us. Thank you Mark.

Oh, and there might be some Skyline Chili consumed as well.

Have a great weekend!

BILL BLOG Friday May 9, 2025  Here we go sneaking into a weekend. It’s Friday. Just 71 for the high today in Nashville.   YESTERDAY My Thursday morning started online writing a new up-tempo bluegrass song with Troy Engle in Pennsylvania. Troy plays every instrument that has strings on it, sings, writes, produces…not much he can’t do musically. When he lived in Nashville, he hung out a lot with Tom T Hall , played on numerous recording sessions, and was out on the road playing some instrument with the likes of Eric Church , The Isaacs and a long list of country stars.   But several years ago, Troy moved back to PA with his family and plays some shows up there with his family band, but still does a lot of recording work from home. He told me yesterday that his daughter may enroll at a University in Nashville next year and that might bring him back to Music City. It would be great to have him here and get to work him in person more.   ...

New Song Recorded...Lulu...Book On The Way

BILL BLOG Friday April 25, 2025   Here comes the weekend. It’s Friday once again. A high of 71 today with more rain on the way.   YESTERDAY I wrote with young Taylon Hope for the first time in a long while. Taylon is now a Sophomore at Belmont, University here in Nashville, and she’s chasing her musical dreams. We were to write in person and then one of her professors scheduled a test that would have conflicted so we wrote online instead and created a fun song for her that will be something she can add to her set list when she’s out performing “live”.   I’m rooting for some of her dreams to come true as I am so many other young talents in this crazy creative town.   BURN ME DOWN An American Idol contestant from a year ago, Kennedy Reid reached out to me a few months ago through a producer friers asking for songs for consideration for an album she was going to record. I sent three or 4 songs and ,she recorded one of those that I w...

Storm Weary...Wrestling Church...Gators

BILL BLOG Friday April 4, 2025  Friday morning in soggy Nashville.   YESTERDAY It was another day of storms, tornadoes, and a whole lot of flooding. And it sounds like we could get more and nobody wants that. Folks are storm-weary from the constant flood and tornado warnings that have been lighting up our phones for the past couple of days and nights. Hallways have become bedrooms for some. Schools are still closed today because of the flooding and damage and the weather forecast predicts that we are still not done with this system that just won’t go away. There are now 5 confirmed deaths so far.   Across the region where these storms have been constant the weather service has issued over 300 tornado warnings. There were a lot of big wind-walls like this one that hit near Nashville.   Selmer, Tennessee…also near Nashville was really hit hard.   Our house is on a hill so we don’t worry much about flooding. But I’m going to...
