The Masters...Missouri Festival...Big Lips

BILL BLOG

Friday April 11, 2025

Friday morning and we have power, cable, and internet. That disappeared for a few hours last night when a little wind storm whipped through with rain. Better weather today going into the weekend. Sunny with a high of 76 predicted for today.

YESTERDAY-FORE!

I had a pretty lazy day as my writing appointment that was scheduled was cancelled and rescheduled. That allowed me to watch some of the opening round of the Masters down in Augusta on TV.  I always love seeing the older group of golfers at Augusta. Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Gary Player all in a trio yesterday.

They did not show one of the golfers, Jose Luis Ballester peeing into famed Rae’s Creek. And he did. And then said he would do it again. Okay then.

Pretty sure the Master's has enough beloved traditions without adding this one.

GOLF AND BASEBALL

It was pretty cool seeing baseball great Ken Griffey Jr. shooting pictures at the Masters. He’s an accredited photographer now after a Hall of Fame baseball career. Which reminds me.

I interviewed Griffey Jr in the Cincinnati Reds dugout one time. I was never nervous interviewing folks for the most part. But I’m a big baseball fan and I was a tad nervous that day because I’m a big fan. A media friend tipped me off and said to ask him about NASCAR. What?!

He walks in and I hold up a mic to interview him in front of his locker. He looks aloof and non-interested. Geez. After a couple of baseball questions I asked him about being a NASCAR fan and he lights up! Who knew?  And then we had a GREAT interview that we played 3 or 4 times on my radio show in Cincinnati at the time.

PLAYING HOOKEY AT WORK

A new study claims that folks who love golf will tend to watch or try to watch the Masters Tournament at work. And they claim work productivity from those folks can drop as much as 97% because of that. You can find those folks in an office easily as they are prone to yell out “It’s in the hole”! Loudly.

MO MO FESTIVAL

I will be back in the Mississippi River town that is Louisiana, Missouri on July 5 for a big Mo Mo Festival where I will be their featured entertainer that evening on the Riverfront Stage. It looks like I will be closing the day out with my performance of the Mo Mo song I recorded way back when about that Big Foot monster that was roaming around the town.

This poster you see below has more details as does their WEBSITE that you can click on.  Louisiana is a short distance from Elsberry, Missouri where I graduated High School, so I’m very much looking forward to getting back home again.

SONG OF THE DAY

Today’s song is an edgy-sassy song written with Aussie Katrina Burgoyne who is not afraid to go down the “Sassy” road. This tune is titled “Stones” that the two of us wrote after I shared the idea with Kat. “You Can’t Be My Rock, If You Ain’t Got The Stones.”. This one will be on her new album she’s working on, and here’s a video of her singing it on stage at the Listening Room Café in Nashville a few months ago. Enjoy.

HEALTH NOTES

Concerning. At least five nurses working on the same floor of a Boston area hospital have been diagnosed with brain tumors and so far, there are no answers.

RFK Jr., announces that massive testing and research will happen in an effort to find the cause of autism.

Intermittent fasting 3 days helps with faster weight loss than daily diet according to a new study.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

And if you’re in the comedy business you pretty much accept that every now and then someone is going to be offended. And here’s a funny true story about that.

Years ago, I did concert in Gulf Shores, Alabama with my friend Brent Burns. We had a great crowd and a great response. I sang a song that’s on my “Off The Wall” CD titled, “Sometimes Religion Scares The Hell OutOf Me.”  After the show driving back to our hotel my wife Kathy told me that while I was singing that song an older lady stormed out of the room because she was offended by some of the lyrics. BUT the husband did NOT leave as he was LAUGHING so hard. Just goes to show how comedy hits folks differently.

I think her husband bought the CD with that song on it. LOL.

KIDS OR NOT

Michigan State research says that the number of people who are choosing not to have children has doubled in the last 2 decades. Some say they want a simpler life. I’m sure others look at the cost of raising a child. On average it costs around $310,000 from birth to the age of 18.

One man admitted he wasn’t done being a kid himself. So, there’s that.

NOAH

A group of archaeologists believe they have found Noah’s Ark 18 miles south of the summit of Mount Ararat in Turkey. That’s according to the SUN which in to the most reliable publication in the world.

I don’t believe it since I’ve already seen the Ark in Kentucky.

SPEAKING OF KIDS

A 9-year-old boy in Kansas missed his bus to school. His Mom was gone, and Dad was at work. He did what any young kid would do. He got in his parent’s truck and drove himself to school. A motorist noticed and called the cops. He told them he didn’t want to miss school. Police did not write a ticket as he did not hit anything or anyone saying he was in enough trouble with his parents.

The old “wait until Dad gets home” thing.

LIPS

A study says that men prefer natural lips on women over “pouty fake ones”. I have to agree. I’ve never thought Mrs. Potato Head had sexy lips.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Dog Saves Owner’s Life After Cat Starts A Fire. (I laughed out loud when I read that one)

TODAY

I’ll be at my publishing company writing with Troy Engle for the FIRST time face-to-face. In person. My publisher years ago suggested the two of us should write. And we’ve written a bunch of songs together, some that Troy has recorded like “Back Home” which was a hit for him on the Bluegrass charts. BUT, all of that writing was done on our computers as he lives in Pennsylvania. It will be a pleasure to meet him for the first time today.

Click on the link to hear that song and keep in mind that Troy is playing every instrument that you hear AND he's singing.

THE WEEKEND

I have a house concert tomorrow in Thompson Station, Tennessee at the home of Robert and Lori Hill with my songwriting buddies Wil Nance and Lauren Mascitti. We played there last year, and it’s nice of them to ask us back again. And it will be a birthday party as Lori Hill will be celebrating her 70th birthday. That should be fun.

Have a great weekend!

ACM Awards Show...Frank Brown Songwriters Festival...Mother's Day Weekend

BILL BLOG Friday May 9, 2025  Here we go sneaking into a weekend. It’s Friday. Just 71 for the high today in Nashville.   YESTERDAY My Thursday morning started online writing a new up-tempo bluegrass song with Troy Engle in Pennsylvania. Troy plays every instrument that has strings on it, sings, writes, produces…not much he can’t do musically. When he lived in Nashville, he hung out a lot with Tom T Hall , played on numerous recording sessions, and was out on the road playing some instrument with the likes of Eric Church , The Isaacs and a long list of country stars.   But several years ago, Troy moved back to PA with his family and plays some shows up there with his family band, but still does a lot of recording work from home. He told me yesterday that his daughter may enroll at a University in Nashville next year and that might bring him back to Music City. It would be great to have him here and get to work him in person more.   ...

Friends Honored...Father's Day...Freedom Sings USA Trip

BILL BLOG Monday June 16, 2025   Another Monday has rolled around. And it’s a packing day for me with a road trip tomorrow to Illinois. More on that at the end of today’s Blog.   We will hit 85 for a high today in Nashville.   Meanwhile, over the weekend, the National Weather Service issued the “first-ever” heat warning for Alaska.   THE WEEKEND Friday morning, I wrote a new song with my friend Rick Lang , who was in town for a week’s worth of songwriting. Rick lives out in New Hampshire, but drives to Nashville at least once a month to write. He always brings great song ideas with him, and we wrote one of those Friday morning.  His “Blue Collar Gospel” album, “Songs of Rick Lang” has done very well for Billy Blue Records. I was blessed to be a writer on the title track that was recorded by our friend Jerry Salley with the Oak Ridge Boys .     And he’s working towards another full album project that will be kind of un...

Illinois Today...Some Nominations...Bluebird Tickets On Sale

BILL BLOG Wednesday June 18, 2025   Good morning from Heyworth, Illinois. We have a 74 degree high on tap here today with some rain mixed with the sun.   YESTERDAY Myself and 4 other Nashville songwriters made the trip from Nashville up to Heyworth for our Freedom Sings USA retreat here where today we will write some veteran stories into songs.   You know you’re in central Illinois when you roll past these bad boys.   This is our second trip to Heyworth, which is just 10 minutes away from Bloomington, Illinois. The event is held at the local American Legion Hall, where they treated me, Bobby Tomberlin , Steve Dean & Bill DiLuigi to a great dinner. And then the 4 of us played music for those gathered before we came back to the hotel to rest up for today.  Small town, great folks who are proud of their town, and patriotic.   LUCKY One of the founders of Freedom Sings USA is Don Goodman , who is also a hit writ...
