Trop Rockin' Song...Pythagoras...Lots of Pizza

BILL BLOG

Thursday October 31, 2024

Hello Halloween. October 31…last day of pumpkin month. 77 with a little light rain in Nashville today so the trick or treaters will need an orange umbrella tonight.

Meanwhile out west they have a winter storm warning out for 12 states with as much as 2 feet of snow predicted in some areas. Uh…no thanks.

YESTERDAY

I wrote with Trop Rock artist Kirstie Kraus at my publishing company. Kirstie just won a couple of independent music awards back to back weeks so she’s on a bit of a music roll right now. We share a bit of a Wisconsin connection as she was born and raised there and I spent six years on the radio in Milwaukee at one point in my radio career. And we are both in the Trop Rock world some.

So yesterday we did the obvious thing and wrote another beach song for her to consider for her next album…and there’s always a next “beach” album coming in the Trop Rock world.

It’s always fun writing those kinds of song.

STATION INN AGAIN

Last night I went back to the Station Inn after being there the night before to hear the French Family Band with guests for the first time.

Last night the young college bluegrass band Pythagoras from east Tennessee opened for the hit bluegrass group The Po’ Rambling Boys. These 5 kids attend Eastern Tennessee State University where my bluegrass friend and co-writer Tim Stafford teaches. And these kids are part of his class. They just recorded their first album.

Tim pitched them a song the two of us wrote “Old Grey Stone” that they loved and they included on their album.

So I met the kids for the first time backstage before they went on stage and they told me that they thought our song was the best one on the album…so that was nice to hear. And then I sat down and listened to their 45 minute set. They were very fun to watch and their young talent was obvious. Certainly a group to keep your eye on for the future.

SONG OF THE DAY

Today’s selection is “If George Strait Starts Dancing” from Cledus T. Judd which was the first song of mine to be recorded by a major name. The song was born from watching the CMA Award Show one year when they ran dancers out with “country” singers like Lee Ann Womack and Alan Jackson. I thought that was really stupid and I picked up my guitar and wrote part of “If George Strait Starts Dancing, Somebody Shoot Me In The Head.”

I played what I had for producer friend one day on Music Row…Steve Ivey…and Steve laughed and asked for a copy. A few days later he told me that he walked it over to Cledus office and he and his producer finished up my song and recorded the dang thing. To say I was surprised and thrilled would be an understatement. And since that time Cledus has gone on to record 5 other songs we’ve written together.

SCHEDULE CHANGES

Victoria Venier in our “Hits & Grins” trio is going to miss the Frank BrownSongwriters Festival next week down in Gulf Shores with me and Steve Dean. So…our Saturday night show at 7 pm at Perdido Beach Resort we’ll have songwriter Rhonda Hart sitting in with us.

Then Sunday night at 7 pm at the Flora-Bama Brent Burns will join me and Steve. That will be a crazy fun show. The complete schedule with all the changes are in the TOUR section here on my website. We leave next Thursday for the beach where I’ll be part of 5 shows there. But we will certainly miss having Victoria with us.

NOVEMBER 16

Our “Evening in the Round” show will be in Greenville, Ohio starring Linda Davis with Lang Scott and me at the beautiful St. Clair Memorial Hall there.

Thank you to the folks at the Daily Advocate for this nice ARTICLE about our show that night. I always enjoy being back in the Buckeye state.

And I promise you that the three of us will not be dressed like this for our show that evening.

HEALTH NOTES

Smoothie King has added a special Ozempic menu calling it a “special balance”.

A $3 coffee filter is being developed that could detect colorectal cancer in under an hour according to some researchers in El Paso.

H5N1 bird flu has been found in a pig in the U.S. for the very first time.

FUNNY JOAN RIVERS

The late comedienne once said, “My breasts are so low, now I can have a mammogram and pedicure at the same time”.

THE DODGERS WIN

They closed out the series last night in the Bronx taking the Yankees 4 games to 1. And my thought this morning is…how many days until Spring Training?

SCIENTISTS SAY

That there COULD be aliens on Uranus’ moon. And I’m sure there must be an inappropriate joke for that somewhere.

MEANWHILE

Elon Musk is predicting there will be more robots than humans by the year 2040. Many of them have already been spotted on the moon of Uranus…I think.

STARBUCKS

Sales are down and the CEO is ready to make these changes. Coffee in your hands in 4 minutes or less. More comfy chairs inside their stores. Ever sat for long on those hard chairs?  And…if you have your coffee inside they’ll pour it in a ceramic cup…a REAL danged coffee cup. Better yet…could customers like me bring our own ceramic cup?

THE FINGER

Researchers have made some remarkable advances in robotics. Enough so that they predict this robotic finger will be capable of performing routine medical examinations.

As a male…I just squirmed a bit after reading this.

LOTS OF PIZZA

Jason Halkins is a custodian in Iowa. Jason is 35 years old and love Pizza Ranch.

No, I mean he LOVES Pizza Ranch. He has now visited and eaten at all 224 locations of Pizza Ranch. Hey…everybody should have high goals in their life. Congratulations Jason.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Officer Attacked By Giant Pumpkin Months After Turkeys Chased Him Down During A Traffic Stop. (Wonder if he called for backup either time?)

TODAY
I’m back with Jenny Tolman and her husband Dave Brainard to finish up a song we started a couple of months ago.

And I guarantee you their little boy “Bear” will probably be jumping in to help us!

TONIGHT

My wife and I will be at the Opry to cheer for our friend Linda Davis who will be on with folks like the Gatlin Brothers and Trace Adkins on their Thursday Night Opry “Classic” show. Always fun to hang back stage a bit at the Opry and then go sit out front for moments like these.

Have a great Thursday

Freedom Sings USA Event...A Gold Star Mom...An Old Friend Surprise

BILL BLOG Monday September 9, 2024 Monday morning and I’m back home in Nashville from Marion, Illinois. Sunshine and a high of 84 today here in Music City.       THE WEEKEND Thursday I made the three hour trip up to Marion, Illinois for our Freedom Sings USA songwriter retreat with songwriters Bobby Tomberlin , Steve Dean , Irene Kelley, and Don Goodman.   Marion is in southern Illinois…beautiful town and the folks who organized the event were so kind and passionate about honoring their veterans. Friday night they had a “meet and greet” in a beautiful old church where we had a great dinner and then played a show for all of those who attended. The Mayor, the organizers and the veterans.   Each songwriter met the veteran they were going to write with that night. This is mine. His name is Art Fager .   More on Art in a second.   FRIDAY Friday morning we gathered in yet another church for early breakfast and then each songwriter sat down wit

Beach Rhymes...Football Kickoff...Freedom Sings USA Trip

BILL BLOG Thursday September 5, 2024   Thursday arises and I have a day of traveling to Marion, Illinois. More on that at the end of today’s Blog. Back up to 90 with sun today.   YESTERDAY I wrote with Darrell Clanton yesterday for the first time. Darrell lives in Lakeland, Florida with his wife and back in the day he was an artist here in Nashville and had a couple of country songs on the charts, and had several folks record his songs.     These days Darrell and his band “Bad Habit” are very active in the Trop Rock genre playing a lot of beach music and beach shows. A couple of years ago Darrell and I played the Jim Parker Songwriter Show in Huntsville, Alabama along with my buddy Brent Burns . And then Darrell and I just played it again a few months ago. Then yesterday I really got to know him and we did write a beach song for him.   We’ll be writing more for sure in the future. And there’s a chance that sometime next year that we’ll do a cruise toget

Funny Song...Music Luncheon...Gladiator

BILL BLOG Friday July 26, 2024   Friday morning…rolling into a late July weekend. 82 for the high in Twang Town today with a little rain in the mix.   YESTERDAY I had a very full Wednesday that started with writing a new funny song with young Ethan Phillips who walked into the writing room and said something in conversation that led us to writing what he said about women being compared to a volcano. We may have had WAY too much fun writing that thought. And it could very well turn out to be a song I put on my set list from time to time when I’m out performing.   LUNCH We finished up in time for me to run down south of Nashville to have lunch with my friends Linda Davis & Lang Scott and our mutual friends Richard & Donna Lynch who run a wonderful venue in Waynesville, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati called the “Keep It Country Farm”.   Linda, Lang and myself did a show for them last year and had the best time. They turned part of their f
