Beach Rhymes...Football Kickoff...Freedom Sings USA Trip

BILL BLOG

Thursday September 5, 2024

Thursday arises and I have a day of traveling to Marion, Illinois. More on that at the end of today’s Blog. Back up to 90 with sun today.

YESTERDAY

I wrote with Darrell Clanton yesterday for the first time. Darrell lives in Lakeland, Florida with his wife and back in the day he was an artist here in Nashville and had a couple of country songs on the charts, and had several folks record his songs.

These days Darrell and his band “Bad Habit” are very active in the Trop Rock genre playing a lot of beach music and beach shows. A couple of years ago Darrell and I played the Jim Parker Songwriter Show in Huntsville, Alabama along with my buddy Brent Burns. And then Darrell and I just played it again a few months ago. Then yesterday I really got to know him and we did write a beach song for him.

We’ll be writing more for sure in the future. And there’s a chance that sometime next year that we’ll do a cruise together as he does that quite a bit and invites a songwriter or two to go along. Thinking I might be one of those next year. Stay tuned.

SONG OF THE DAY

So…since I was talking about beach songs I’m going to share one that my Missouri friend Becky Denton recorded that we wrote together “There Ain't No Ocean In Missouri". This should put you in a beach mood for sure.

PENSACOLA SONGWRITERS FESTIVAL

Just got this poster yesterday of one of two shows I’ll be playing with hit writers Larry Cordle and Jerry Salley this year at the writers festival in Pensacola.

This is going to be great fun. And then the following night we have a second show together at the Casino Beach & Grill that will start at 7:30 pm. Come to the beach and join us!

BELATED

I want to say a very happy anniversary to my brother Gary & and his wife Kay who celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary yesterday down in Florida where they now live. That’s an amazing feat for any couple and I’m proud of the great success they’ve had and the great life they built for themselves. Happy Anniversary kids.

HEALTH NOTES

A new study out of Harvard advises pregnant women to eat 8 to 12 ounces of seafood low in mercury to aid fetal brain development.

A neuroscientist claims that Macha…a green tea is the best drink for brain health. The worst?  Red wine.

It’s already that time of the year. Flu shots have arrived.

SPEAKING OF THAT TIME OF YEAR

The first NFL is on tonight for the 2024 season. Chiefs vs Ravens which should be a dandy to watch. Patrick Mahomes vs Lamar Jackson. I’ll be finding time to watch some of that this evening in a hotel room in Marion, Illinois. I’ve moved around enough that I root for several teams. Packers, Bengals, Titans. But I’m from Missouri so I have to root for the Chiefs as well. I’m hoping the hotel I’m staying in tonight has popcorn.

DEMOCRACY JOKE

I taught my kids about democracy tonight by having them vote on which movie to watch and pizza to order. I then picked the movie and pizza because I’m the one with the money.

VOLVO

That car company has given up on their plan to be all electric vehicles by 2030. The demand does not seem to be there yet to make that worthwhile. Looks like we’re still going to be pumping gas for a long while.

NO SURPRISE

Online scams are now at an all-time high. 880,000 complaints were filed with the FBI and that’s up 20% and growing from just a couple of years ago. Wonder how many of those have been about the T-Shirt scam that just continues and continues on Facebook?

SPEAKING OF T-SHIRTS
Now, I might buy a T-shirt that has this on the front of it.

Something to wear on stage at some of my shows perhaps.

TRUMP THE MOVIE

The trailer is out for the Trump movie…for anyone interested. Actor Sebastian Stan has the lead as Donald.

And this is him as Trump.

I’d like to know how long he had to sit in the “hair chair” in the makeup room each day. Here’s the first TRAILER for the movie.

MEGAMILLIONS

It’s worth 681 million at the next drawing. Realistically I have no chance of winning. My brain repeatedly reminds me of this fact. But still…this is my thinking.

HEADLING OF THE DAY

Woman Horrified To Realize Her Bridesmaid Dress Was On Backwards All Day. (Uh…label in on the back)

TODAY

Time to roll towards Marion, Illinois where I’ll be through Saturday with Freedom Sings USA alongside some other songwriters as we each sit with a veteran and write their stories into songs. Then Saturday night in downtown Marion we’ll have a free outdoor concert where those veterans will be honored. It’s always a very special experience.

Have a great Thursday!

A Seed Song...Happy Birthday...Beanie Babies

BILL BLOG Thursday July 18, 2024   Here it be…Thursday already. We had some needed rain roll in last night…pretty heavy and it’s going to cool things off here in Nashville. Today’s high will only be 83 after being in the high 90’s for several days. That’s going to feel like a breath of fresh air…literally.   YESTERDAY Another free day yesterday so pretty lazy around the Whyte House. I did some voting yesterday as the early round are up for voting in both the CMA Awards and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. So I cast early votes in both…final round voting will come later. Good luck to all and there are so many who deserve to win.   A JINGLE I talked with my northern Missouri friend Becky Denton yesterday as she was in town with her talented husband Will Denton who plays both drums and piano and he was in Nashville prepping for a show with a Tom Petty tribute band that he’s part of. A couple of years ago the three of us wrote a song to pitch to the Merschman

Funny Song...Music Luncheon...Gladiator

BILL BLOG Friday July 26, 2024   Friday morning…rolling into a late July weekend. 82 for the high in Twang Town today with a little rain in the mix.   YESTERDAY I had a very full Wednesday that started with writing a new funny song with young Ethan Phillips who walked into the writing room and said something in conversation that led us to writing what he said about women being compared to a volcano. We may have had WAY too much fun writing that thought. And it could very well turn out to be a song I put on my set list from time to time when I’m out performing.   LUNCH We finished up in time for me to run down south of Nashville to have lunch with my friends Linda Davis & Lang Scott and our mutual friends Richard & Donna Lynch who run a wonderful venue in Waynesville, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati called the “Keep It Country Farm”.   Linda, Lang and myself did a show for them last year and had the best time. They turned part of their f

Fishing Song...Great Album Review...A Promotion

BILL BLOG Friday July 19, 2024   Friday morning and we’re getting ready to jump into the weekend. Sunshine and an 84 high in Music City today.   YESTERDAY I spent yesterday morning writing a fun fishing-love kind of song with bluegrass artist Caroline Owens yesterday. Caroline can bait her own hook which I already knew so I wasn’t too surprised that she loved the song idea. She talked about hooking her ear a few times while fly-fishing, so I knew I had given this idea to the right artist.     And we got to wrap up the day with dinner at a great Mexican restaurant our publisher Joe Dan Cornett took us and the head of the label Jerry Salley and Billy Blue Recording artist Carson Peters out to lunch where we not only shared chips and salsa, but we shared a lot of laughs.   FYI…Carson Peters is an incredibly talented artist at just the age of 19. He appeared on the Jay Leno “Tonight Show” when he was just 8 years old, then played the Grand Ole Opry shortly
