Parrot Heads..."Watching You"...Two Shows Today

BILL BLOG

Friday October 25, 2024

It’s Friday morning here in Gulf Shores, Alabama. 85 and sunny here today. Not bad. Gulf Shores is not the only place trending warmer. They’re saying NYC could hit a record high on Halloween. Gonna be some hot kids in those trick or treat costumes.

YESTERDAY

Another postcard day in Gulf Shores yesterday and I spent the afternoon at Lulu’s again watching my friend Brent Burns holding court and bringing up some Trop Rock entertainers and singers. Jerry Diaz who started the whole Meeting of the Minds and Parrot Head Clubs across the country was there and got up and sang a few. There’s a great documentary about what Jerry started that’s really great…and Jerry in in the film a lot. Here’s a link to that fun DOCUMENTARY.

My friend Donny Brewer got up and sang the new song “Those Jeans” we wrote together that Donny recorded with Stoney Gabel that he put on his brand new CD Winnebago Tapes 2. Funny song…and it got a great response from the Parrot Head crowd that was there.

And I was surprised to see my friend Paul Tull in the crowd. Paul is part of our Freedom Sings USA group and helps organize those veteran-songwriter retreats whenever we go to Little Rock. Paul was there with 39 other Parrot Heads from the Little Rock chapter that he too is part of. Great to see him!

Just a great sunny day at Lulu’s with the boats in harbor.

And…the cold beer

And Key Lime pie wasn’t bad either.

SONG OF THE DAY

So again, since I’m on the beach here’s another beach song I wrote with Becky Denton from Missouri “Two Bags, One Beach”. Becky’s husband Will Denton did great job producing this beach tune. Give it a listen.

BIG TIME CONGRATULATIONS

To my longtime friend, “Hits & Grins” partner, and co-writer Steve Dean who was honored last night for the song he wrote with another co-writer friend Brian White along with the artist Rodney Atkins.

Their song “Watching You” that we close out most of our “Hits & Grins” shows with just went triple-platinum in sales and Steve and Brian became members of the Gold Platinum Club at a celebration last night in Nashville.

I could not be happier for my two friends. Couple of great guys and an amazing song they wrote.

HEALTH NOTES

A new study suggests that Ozempic could help reduce Alzheimer’s risk for some.

A McDonald’s supplier has recalled several onion products used to make Quarter Pounders amid a major E Coli outbreak.

A health expert claims we should be able to balance on one leg for five seconds. If not, there’s a higher chance that one could fall more easily.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

From the late Robin Williams who once asked this great question. “Why do they call it rush hour when nothing moves?”

BIG BUILDING

Saudi Arabia is building the world’s biggest building the capital city of Riyadh. How big? It will be able to hold 20 Empire State Buildings in it. 1,500 feet high, 1,200 feet wide.

In the words of a farmer friend of mine, “I’ll bet that place can hold a lot of hay.”

MORE WEATHER

Tropical storm Patty is forming now and could impact Florida. Just what they don’t need. The really bad news is that there are still 6 more weeks left of hurricane season.

I’ve talked to a lot of friends down here at this Parrot Head gathering…many of them affected by Helene. Some without power still. Part of living on the Gulf Coast I suppose. Many have learned to keep their sense of humor about it.

Someone pointed out that hurricane season is similar to Christmas season. At some point there’s going to be a tree in the house.

POLITICS

How weird and stupid is politics? A stripper named “Viva Las Vegas” is running for Mayor of Portland. Wonder how she’s doing in the poles by now.

MADE ME SMILE

ROBOTS

Apparently musicians have to worry about robots replacing them. Check out this cello playing ROBOT with the Swedish orchestra. Geez.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Drunk Zamboni Driver In Kangaroo Costume Arrested For DUI After Crashing Into Boards. (I’m not sure which is weirder…the fact that he’s drunk on a Zamboni, or the fact that he’s wearing a Kangaroo costume while doing so. I’m betting the hockey team will put him on “ice” for a while.)

TODAY
I have two shows here in Gulf Shores today. At noon with my friend Kelly McGuire at the Hangout with a view of the ocean while I’m playing.

Then a 1:30 pm show with Brent Burns at Lulu’s that will be out of control funny I’m sure.

And I’m thinking we might turn on the TV tonight and watch game 1 of the World Series that starts tonight in LA where Brad Paisley is going to sing the National Anthem.

Then back home to Nashville early tomorrow morning.

Have a great weekend!

A Bluebird Show...New Album In The Mail...An Interview With An Old Friend

BILL BLOG Tuesday November 26, 2024   Tuesday morning…couple days away from carving the turkey. 50 for the high today here in Music City…bracing for some cold weather on the way.   YESTERDAY I had nothing musical on the calendar yesterday…but had one of those “had to do” things that took up a chunk of my day. Sometimes you can’t control a calendar…the calendar controls you and give you no choice. But there was some good news that came rolling in.   NEW SHOW On Tuesday January 28 I’ll be hosting a songwriter round at the world famous Bluebird Café. And the great part about this news is that I’m going to be able to add my longtime friend Brent Burns to this show…something that’s been a bucket list item for him.   And I’m so glad that I’m the one who will get to make this happen for him. EVERY songwriter wants to play the Bluebird. And somehow, even though my friend lived in Nashville and wrote very seriously for a long while, he ne...

A Duo Write...Wienermobile Applications...Love Tom

BILL BLOG Thursday December 19, 2024   Thursday morning has arrived and after some heavy rain here in Nashville yesterday it will cool off to a high of just 45 today.   YESTERDAY I had such a fun write with 2/3rds of the “ Three Times A Lady ” trio.   That would be Victoria Camp and a pregnant Kennedy Scott . Kennedy is due about the first of May of next year…and her baby bump is growing. She and the trio will be playing several weeks in a row at Dollywood come next March…so that will be an interesting challenge for her for sure.   And it was Kennedy who brought in a very cool idea that we wrote together after Victoria came up with an almost “swampy” kind of melody to fit under the lyrics. Got a pretty good feeling this one will be on their next album. Yep, a good day.   SONG OF THE DAY I’ve posted this song before but it seems appropriate to make it today’s song of the day after talking about the “Three Times A Lady”. ...

Quiet New Year...Ray Stevens...A Look Back

BILL BLOG January 1, 2025   Wednesday…bring with it the very first day of a New Year. Time flies don’t it?   YESTERDAY A lazy New Year’s Eve day around the Whyte House. My wife and I called our daughter Heather over in Germany to wish her a Happy Birthday…yep a New Year’s Eve kid. She and her husband Casey were in a theme park in the Netherlands called “Efteling” to celebrate the occasion. The two of them took us there when we were over in Germany last year so in our minds at least…we could picture where they were at. More on the Germany trip at the end of today’s Blog in the “Looking Back” section.   TWEAKING I also spent a little time on the phone with producer-writer-singer Jerry Salley who is recording a song I helped write with my friend Andrea Pearson tweaking some lyrics of that song that young-talented bluegrass artist Caroline Owens is getting ready to record on her next album. Heck of an up-tempo tune and we wanted to make s...
