Prime Days...Miller Time...National Anthem

BILL BLOG

Tuesday July 16, 2024

Tuesday morning in Nashville and it’s Amazon Prime Days!  I’ll be working hard to hide the computer from my wife today.

It will be the hottest day of the year so far in Nashville. 97 for a high and up in the hundreds with the heat index. Imagine having to be a road worker today standing on asphalt holding a sign. Geez.

YESTERDAY

My writing session was with my friend Alex Miller and we had a good day at the rhyming office. He brought an idea, I brought an idea and we finished both of them up into songs.

Alex is still high off of his first Grand Ole Opry appearance a few weeks ago after his friend Eddie Montgomery helped open that door Alex. The kind of stuff that keeps a young artist floating on cloud 9 for a while. Alex recorded a very fun duet recently with Emily Ann Roberts of “The Voice” fame that we wrote together that should be released first of the year or so along with another duet he recorded with the great Tracy Byrd. So he’s been busy.

If Alex ever plays a show in your neighborhood go see him. You’ll see why so many folks like him…as I do.

NATIONAL ANTHEM

Last night I watched the Home Run Derby on ESPN and it was fun to watch. Teoscar Hernandez won the event by one home run right at the end over Kansas City Royal Bobby Witt. It went down to the last swing. Good TV.

But the event itself was overshadowed by the awful rendition of the National Anthem sung by Grammy nominee Ingrid Andress. Maybe the WORST RENDITION ever. Worse than the Roseanne Barr spitting and scratching version that’s also hard to forget. Roseanne was a at least an actress-comedian so for me that makes what I heard last night the worst. If you missed it, click on the link, and listen.

And then listen to Ingrid sing this great song that I’m such a fan of, “Breaking MoreHearts Than Mine”. How can that possibly be the same girl? Nobody wants to have that kind of moment.

I’ve sung the National Anthem a couple of times. Once on the ice at a hockey game, another at a Cincinnati Reds Fantasy Camp baseball game with some former Reds in uniform behind me. It’s nerve wracking. And it’s not an easy song to sing. Picking the right key is essential because of the high notes at the end. It’s more pleasing to hit a bad low note than it is those high notes. And I agree with some that “God Bless America” would have been a much better National Anthem as it’s a much prettier melody and easy for almost anyone to sing.

Ingrid said this morning that she “tried her best”. So I don’t know what happened to her last night. And I certainly have empathy for her. But man, it was really hard to listen to. I don’t know if she couldn’t hear herself, if she didn’t practice it enough, picked the wrong key, I don’t know. Maybe more will come out to help explain how a Grammy nominated singer could have had such a bad moment in front of a big audience.

HOUDINI

My northern Missouri friend Becky Denton has been filming herself singing the songs off her latest EP project and over the weekend she sent me the video of her singing the song we wrote “Houdini” that is on her album “It Feels Good”. Cool song, and sonically it’s a little different than a lot of songs I write. Which is why I think I like it so much. Check that out HERE if you’re curious.

NEXT SHOW

That will be Friday night August 2 in Huntsville, Alabama at the great Jim Parker Songwriter Series held inside the beautiful Von Braun theater there.

It’s dinner and a show and I think this may be the 5th time I’ve had a chance to do Jim’s show. This one will feature Jim, me, and a couple of Trop Rock artists Darrell Clanton and Brooke Graham. So expect to hear some “beachy” tunes that night.

HEALTH NOTE

There’s a rare sleep disorder that causes people to cook and eat food while they’re asleep. Who knew?

Some scientists are talking about a nasal spray that could wash the brain clear of Alzheimer’s disease proteins.

A stunning report from the American Cancer Society claims 40% of cancer deaths could have been prevented with healthier lifestyle choices. Some of those factors are smoking, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, excess body weight, certain viral infections and more.

YOU KNOW IT’S REALLY HOT WHEN…

When a squirrel comes in the house to get under the ceiling fan.

PLANES

Yep…there is now a fully electric 90-passenger plane that can fly 500 miles on just electricity. If I ever booked a ticket I’m pretty sure I’m going to ask them pack a couple of gas cans.

AUTOMOBILES

Or…you can jump into a car driven by a robotic chauffeur if you like.

And you know one of these guys will be your Uber ride someday. Does one have to tip a robot driver?

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Red Tape Holds Up New Bridges. (I always wondered what hold those things up.)

TODAY

No big “gotta do” today. So it’s a chance to catch up on anything that can be caught up while sitting under the AC unit.

Have a great Tuesday

Freedom Sings USA Event...A Gold Star Mom...An Old Friend Surprise

BILL BLOG Monday September 9, 2024 Monday morning and I’m back home in Nashville from Marion, Illinois. Sunshine and a high of 84 today here in Music City.       THE WEEKEND Thursday I made the three hour trip up to Marion, Illinois for our Freedom Sings USA songwriter retreat with songwriters Bobby Tomberlin , Steve Dean , Irene Kelley, and Don Goodman.   Marion is in southern Illinois…beautiful town and the folks who organized the event were so kind and passionate about honoring their veterans. Friday night they had a “meet and greet” in a beautiful old church where we had a great dinner and then played a show for all of those who attended. The Mayor, the organizers and the veterans.   Each songwriter met the veteran they were going to write with that night. This is mine. His name is Art Fager .   More on Art in a second.   FRIDAY Friday morning we gathered in yet another church for early breakfast and then each songwriter sat down wit

Beach Rhymes...Football Kickoff...Freedom Sings USA Trip

BILL BLOG Thursday September 5, 2024   Thursday arises and I have a day of traveling to Marion, Illinois. More on that at the end of today’s Blog. Back up to 90 with sun today.   YESTERDAY I wrote with Darrell Clanton yesterday for the first time. Darrell lives in Lakeland, Florida with his wife and back in the day he was an artist here in Nashville and had a couple of country songs on the charts, and had several folks record his songs.     These days Darrell and his band “Bad Habit” are very active in the Trop Rock genre playing a lot of beach music and beach shows. A couple of years ago Darrell and I played the Jim Parker Songwriter Show in Huntsville, Alabama along with my buddy Brent Burns . And then Darrell and I just played it again a few months ago. Then yesterday I really got to know him and we did write a beach song for him.   We’ll be writing more for sure in the future. And there’s a chance that sometime next year that we’ll do a cruise toget

Funny Song...Music Luncheon...Gladiator

BILL BLOG Friday July 26, 2024   Friday morning…rolling into a late July weekend. 82 for the high in Twang Town today with a little rain in the mix.   YESTERDAY I had a very full Wednesday that started with writing a new funny song with young Ethan Phillips who walked into the writing room and said something in conversation that led us to writing what he said about women being compared to a volcano. We may have had WAY too much fun writing that thought. And it could very well turn out to be a song I put on my set list from time to time when I’m out performing.   LUNCH We finished up in time for me to run down south of Nashville to have lunch with my friends Linda Davis & Lang Scott and our mutual friends Richard & Donna Lynch who run a wonderful venue in Waynesville, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati called the “Keep It Country Farm”.   Linda, Lang and myself did a show for them last year and had the best time. They turned part of their f
