BILL BLOG

Monday July 22, 2024

In the words of the Mama’s and The Papa’s…”Monday Monday, can’t trust that day”. 83 will be our high in Nashville today with a little rain mixed in.

THE WEEKEND

Friday morning I wrote with my Aussie friend Angus Gill at my publishing company Billy Blue.

And Angus brought a funny idea with him Friday morning which I loved. Angus loves the “Retired” song that I wrote with Brent Burns that Ray Stevens recorded. Brent also recorded THIS VERSION of it as a duet with Ray, and I put it on one of my albums as well. The spin Angus wanted to put on our song was to concentrate on all the retired folks who sell their homes and travel the country in a rolling RV.

So we did that and laughed a lot in the process. THAT always makes for a fun day of songwriting.

LOT OF GOOD NEWS

Right before I left for my songwriting appointment Friday morning the Bluegrass Today Gospel Chart came out and “Blue Collar Gospel” by Jerry Salley & The Oak Ridge Boys that I wrote with Jerry & Rick Lang landed in the #1 spot. I got so excited about the news that I posted it, and it wasn’t until later in the day that the publishing company let me know that I had missed the really big news.

Not only did Blue Collar Gospel go #1 but “Never Too Lost” from Troy Engle that was #1 on that chart last week was still in the top 10 at #3 that I wrote with Troy.

AND…slipping in at the #10 spot is “Church Bells A Ringin” that Danny Paisley recorded on that Rick Lang and I wrote that’s on the “Blue Collar Gospel-Songs by Rick Lang” album. Out of nowhere. So 3 songs in the top 10! How I he world does that happen?

AND THEN…
I was trying to wrap my head around that kind of great news when I got notice that the Darin & Brooke Aldridge album “Talk of the Town” that I have two songs on landed at #1 on the album chart at Bluegrass Weekly which is the sorta kind of Bible for bluegrass music.

Some kind of Friday to be that blessed all in one day. Thank you to the artists and my co-writers on all those songs.

HELLO SHILOH

August 9 and 10 are the dates when I’ll be back in Shiloh, Illinois for this great songwriter retreat with Freedom Sings USA writing with our veterans in that area again. Last time we were there we were doing our concert with the vets at a golf club resort when every phone started going off with tornado alerts which force us to cut the concert short. We wound up sitting in the safe area for a couple of hours that night. So hopefully, much better weather this time around.

HEALTH NOTES

Research is suggesting that eating 1 avocado a day it healthy. It improves sleep and diet quality and lowers your risk of heart disease.

A new UCLA study is saying that AI detects cancer with more accuracy than doctors. 17% more to be exact.

A new study claims that sleeping different amounts each night may be linked to higher diabetes risk.

FUNNY…NO MATTER YOUR POLITICAL VIEW

Zoom in on the ear for your laugh.

DID YOU KNOW?

That there are folks who make a darned good living by being “Baby Name Consultants”. They are paid to come up with unique names for babies for those parents looking to do so. Some make up to $350 hourly!  Now, at first thought…what parent can’t name their own danged baby? But some parents have actually named their kids:

Tu Morrow

Ebola

AND…Hitler.

So maybe I do get why $350 or more would have been a great idea for those parents.

SOME KIND OF WEIRD TRUTH HERE

My gut is never wrong. It may hang over my belt a bit, but it’s never wrong.

MORE ON THE ANTHEM

Watch this guy who posted this VIDEO of him playing the guitar chords that Ingrid Andress was singing when she butchered the National Anthem on TV at the MLB All Star Game last week…complete with the chord chart at the end. Do I feel a little sorry for her?  A little…but this is still pretty funny.

And if nothing else, I hope anyone who’s lucky enough to be chosen to sing our Anthem for ANYTHING will heed the lesson. Don’t get drunk, high, altered, whatever before you try to tackle a song that’s difficult to sing sober.

WISDOM WITH AGE

Ruth Olney is 100 years old today. These are her words of wisdom. “Make every day with you partner count. “Once your husband dies, the Lord becomes your husband”.

AND THEN…
There’s 80 year old Suzanne Gratton who celebrated her big birthday by wing-walking. Like on top of a plane. While it’s flying! Hard to blow out 80 candles on a cake when you’re doing that.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

I Went Temporarily Blind After Getting My Eyeballs Tattooed…Its Worth It

And with that I've concluded that there is nothing on the human body that ink can't find if you want it to.

TODAY

I’m back rhyming with Alex Miller again this morning. Another writer, Wil Nance was to join us but he’s under the weather with some of that stuff that’s going around. Get better Wil.

Have a great Monday!

Freedom Sings USA Event...A Gold Star Mom...An Old Friend Surprise

BILL BLOG Monday September 9, 2024 Monday morning and I’m back home in Nashville from Marion, Illinois. Sunshine and a high of 84 today here in Music City.       THE WEEKEND Thursday I made the three hour trip up to Marion, Illinois for our Freedom Sings USA songwriter retreat with songwriters Bobby Tomberlin , Steve Dean , Irene Kelley, and Don Goodman.   Marion is in southern Illinois…beautiful town and the folks who organized the event were so kind and passionate about honoring their veterans. Friday night they had a “meet and greet” in a beautiful old church where we had a great dinner and then played a show for all of those who attended. The Mayor, the organizers and the veterans.   Each songwriter met the veteran they were going to write with that night. This is mine. His name is Art Fager .   More on Art in a second.   FRIDAY Friday morning we gathered in yet another church for early breakfast and then each songwriter sat down wit

BILL BLOG Friday July 26, 2024   Friday morning…rolling into a late July weekend. 82 for the high in Twang Town today with a little rain in the mix.   YESTERDAY I had a very full Wednesday that started with writing a new funny song with young Ethan Phillips who walked into the writing room and said something in conversation that led us to writing what he said about women being compared to a volcano. We may have had WAY too much fun writing that thought. And it could very well turn out to be a song I put on my set list from time to time when I’m out performing.   LUNCH We finished up in time for me to run down south of Nashville to have lunch with my friends Linda Davis & Lang Scott and our mutual friends Richard & Donna Lynch who run a wonderful venue in Waynesville, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati called the “Keep It Country Farm”.   Linda, Lang and myself did a show for them last year and had the best time. They turned part of their f

BILL BLOG Thursday September 5, 2024   Thursday arises and I have a day of traveling to Marion, Illinois. More on that at the end of today’s Blog. Back up to 90 with sun today.   YESTERDAY I wrote with Darrell Clanton yesterday for the first time. Darrell lives in Lakeland, Florida with his wife and back in the day he was an artist here in Nashville and had a couple of country songs on the charts, and had several folks record his songs.     These days Darrell and his band “Bad Habit” are very active in the Trop Rock genre playing a lot of beach music and beach shows. A couple of years ago Darrell and I played the Jim Parker Songwriter Show in Huntsville, Alabama along with my buddy Brent Burns . And then Darrell and I just played it again a few months ago. Then yesterday I really got to know him and we did write a beach song for him.   We’ll be writing more for sure in the future. And there’s a chance that sometime next year that we’ll do a cruise toget
