Target Songwriting...Chart Action...Droning On

BILL BLOG Thursday April 24, 2025  Thursday be here. We had a little thunderstorm roll through last night that watered all the plants and we have a little more of it in the forecast today in Nashville. A high of just 73 today.   YESTERDAY   My writing session was with Brian White and Don Poythress out at Brian’s place yesterday. I’ve written with Brian a few times. Brian has had a lot of his songs recorded including a lot of Christian hits including the recent Dove winner for Song of the Year, “ Looks Like Jesus ” for Brian Free & Assurance with Jimmy Fortune that was #1 for 8 weeks!   Meanwhile Don has a list of hits as well including cuts by Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton , and this Easton Corbin hit "" Little More Country Than That" .   It was my first time getting to write with Don who plays great guitar and has a wonderful singing voice himself. Yesterday we did some “targeted” writing as Brian had received a call fr...

Station Inn Show...Gatlinburg Festival...Throwing Fish

BILL BLOG Wednesday April 23, 2025   Wednesday “Hump Day” be here. A pleasant day ahead with some sunshine and a high 75 in Music City today.   YESTERDAY I made a trip to the grocery store to find out that egg prices have not dropped. Close to ten bucks for a carton of 18. I’m thinking about investing in chickens instead of Tesla these days.   LAST NIGHT I went to the world-famous Station Inn and listened to the French Family Band who are just great.   The family, from Australia and New Zealand are now citizens of the United States and when they announced that it got a loud round of applause. As did every song they performed!   Last night they performed two songs that I wrote with Stuie French , the Dad in the group. His wife Camille sang our new song “Empty House” for the first time ever, and it got a standing ovation from the crowd! That’s as good as it gets for a songwriter these days.      The place...

Old Songs...Flying...Earth Day

BILL BLOG Tuesday April 22, 2025  Tuesday morning is on us. 76 will be the high in Nashville today.   YESTERDAY My writing session was with Stuie French of the French Family Band and young Alex Miller . Both are gifted guitar players so it was a pleasure to sit in the room with the two of them and hear them play a new “jazzy” kind of song the three of us wrote. We finished this idea that Alex brought with him pretty quickly and then just sat around and talked about favorite old songs that the two of them would then play.   Alex is only in is his early 20’s but knows EVERY old country song you can think of. We sat around and sang a couple of Bob Wills songs and Haggard songs, and George Jones songs.   I swear Alex reminds me of me a little as when I was in college I was in a country band and I was listening to Haggard, and Jones and Porter Waggoner and Johnny Cash, etc. The guys on my dorm room floor were into the Beatles and Led...

Easter Weekend...New Shows...Mom's Day Next

BILL BLOG Monday April 21, 2025   Monday morning after an Easter weekend. Rain is hitting the roof right now, and we’ll hit a high of just 74 in Nashville after being in the Upper 80’s yesterday.   THE WEEKEND On Good Friday, I wrote two songs with my friend Rick Lang , who was in Nashville to write a week’s worth of tunes. And we closed out his productive week by writing one mainstream bluegrass tune and a song about the true meaning of Easter and the sacrifice made. It felt appropriate for sure, and I love both songs…but the second one especially. Rick is an “idea” guy. He always has a title. Always has a few lines written. So by the time I see him, there’s quite a bit on paper already. And I appreciate him sharing some of his great ideas with me. Friday being no exception.   NEW SHOW August 18 I’ll be playing two “Evening in the Round shows with Linda Davis and Lang Scott at Uncle Lenny’s in Fairview, Tennessee (Nashville area) . This ...

Easter Weekend...Grand Ole Circle...Red High Heels

BILL BLOG Friday April 18, 2025   Friday morning, or I should say, “Good Friday Morning.” Here comes Easter weekend. 76 for the high today.   Meanwhile, in Hawaii, they are calling for 3-5 inches of snow today!   YESTERDAY With the warm weather arriving we’ve been trying to do a little landscaping. And with no writing appointment yesterday I had no excuse to not help with that.   Okay. My wife is landscaping.   I’m her mulch deliverer for the most part, and her outdoor complainer.   She’s planting, digging and growing vegetables. I’m not a veggie guy. Until they come up with a macaroni or steak plant…I’m not interested in tilling and fertilizing. I’m pretty much over yard work and maintenance. I keep trying to convince her to just let me concrete the entire lawn, but she somehow does not see the beauty in that.     And I also can’t convince her to put in a putting green for me. The longer we’re married, the mor...
