Target Songwriting...Chart Action...Droning On

BILL BLOG

Thursday April 24, 2025

Thursday be here. We had a little thunderstorm roll through last night that watered all the plants and we have a little more of it in the forecast today in Nashville. A high of just 73 today.

YESTERDAY
My writing session was with Brian White and Don Poythress out at Brian’s place yesterday. I’ve written with Brian a few times. Brian has had a lot of his songs recorded including a lot of Christian hits including the recent Dove winner for Song of the Year, “Looks Like Jesus” for Brian Free & Assurance with Jimmy Fortune that was #1 for 8 weeks!

Meanwhile Don has a list of hits as well including cuts by Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton, and this Easton Corbin hit ""Little More Country Than That".

It was my first time getting to write with Don who plays great guitar and has a wonderful singing voice himself. Yesterday we did some “targeted” writing as Brian had received a call from an artist that I know who was looking for songs. So we wrote something specifically in that direction and sent it off by e-mail. The early word is that the act likes the song, so maybe we’ll get lucky and they will record this soon. We’ll see.

Either way, it was great getting to work with Don for the first time. The three of us will be writing more in the future.

CHART…WEEKS ON

Gosh, I just looked at this chart and saw that “Country Faith” from Kristen Leigh Bearfield and Karen Peck has been on this gospel chart for 29 weeks now that I wrote with Kristen and Bob Minner.

And “God Never Made A Mountain” by Kristy Cox, that I wrote with Josh Shilling and Andrea Pearson has been on this same chart for a whopping 45 weeks in a row!

Wow. Thank you David Pugh, for loving these songs so much.

SONG OF THE DAY

Today’s song is “Before I Turn Out The Light” recorded by Australian country artist TC Cassidy. I wrote it with Aussie Angus Gill, who was producing a new album on TC, and this is a country waltz that made the album. Thank you for loving the song TC!

HEALTH NOTES

A groundbreaking study suggests that a gut-dwelling bacteria may be behind the recent surge in early-onset colorectal cancer cases.

Doctors and fitness experts tell us that dancing boosts our levels of happiness, while also ensuring overall health and fitness. (As for me I’m pretty happy not having to dance)

A study claims that women are 50% less likely to be prescribed pain meds.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

That’s a pretty convincing sales pitch.

CHICKEN OR THE EGG

To deal with the high price of eggs Petco is now selling laying hens at $5.99 per chicken or chick. They’ve tested it in 5 markets, and they are selling out. All of that makes this picture pretty danged funny.

SCAMS

The FBI says that online scams brought in 16.6 billion dollars last year, up 33% from 2023. Most of us routinely don’t answer calls we don’t recognize or respond to suspicious emails and texts. Sadly, enough folks do to make those scammers rich. Seniors seem to be the most vulnerable.

DRONING

Yet another use of drone technology. Some farmers are now using them to harvest. Fly them up to the top of the trees, and they can pick oranges or apples or whatever.

I wonder if I can use one to trim my shrubs?

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Teen Burglar Kills Goldfish Because He Didn’t Want To Leave Any Witnesses, Cops Say. (Okay then)

TODAY

I’m writing with Taylon Hope today, who is a young artist making her way in Nashville. I wrote with Taylon for the first time when she was too young to drive. Now she’s a college student and making her way in the music business here in Nashville. We’ll see what we can create together today.

Have a great Thursday!

Storm Weary...Wrestling Church...Gators

BILL BLOG Friday April 4, 2025  Friday morning in soggy Nashville.   YESTERDAY It was another day of storms, tornadoes, and a whole lot of flooding. And it sounds like we could get more and nobody wants that. Folks are storm-weary from the constant flood and tornado warnings that have been lighting up our phones for the past couple of days and nights. Hallways have become bedrooms for some. Schools are still closed today because of the flooding and damage and the weather forecast predicts that we are still not done with this system that just won’t go away. There are now 5 confirmed deaths so far.   Across the region where these storms have been constant the weather service has issued over 300 tornado warnings. There were a lot of big wind-walls like this one that hit near Nashville.   Selmer, Tennessee…also near Nashville was really hit hard.   Our house is on a hill so we don’t worry much about flooding. But I’m going to...

New Song Recorded...Lulu...Book On The Way

BILL BLOG Friday April 25, 2025   Here comes the weekend. It’s Friday once again. A high of 71 today with more rain on the way.   YESTERDAY I wrote with young Taylon Hope for the first time in a long while. Taylon is now a Sophomore at Belmont, University here in Nashville, and she’s chasing her musical dreams. We were to write in person and then one of her professors scheduled a test that would have conflicted so we wrote online instead and created a fun song for her that will be something she can add to her set list when she’s out performing “live”.   I’m rooting for some of her dreams to come true as I am so many other young talents in this crazy creative town.   BURN ME DOWN An American Idol contestant from a year ago, Kennedy Reid reached out to me a few months ago through a producer friers asking for songs for consideration for an album she was going to record. I sent three or 4 songs and ,she recorded one of those that I w...

ACM Awards Show...Frank Brown Songwriters Festival...Mother's Day Weekend

BILL BLOG Friday May 9, 2025  Here we go sneaking into a weekend. It’s Friday. Just 71 for the high today in Nashville.   YESTERDAY My Thursday morning started online writing a new up-tempo bluegrass song with Troy Engle in Pennsylvania. Troy plays every instrument that has strings on it, sings, writes, produces…not much he can’t do musically. When he lived in Nashville, he hung out a lot with Tom T Hall , played on numerous recording sessions, and was out on the road playing some instrument with the likes of Eric Church , The Isaacs and a long list of country stars.   But several years ago, Troy moved back to PA with his family and plays some shows up there with his family band, but still does a lot of recording work from home. He told me yesterday that his daughter may enroll at a University in Nashville next year and that might bring him back to Music City. It would be great to have him here and get to work him in person more.   ...
