St. Pat Weekend...A Gaither Funny Man...Huntsville Weekend

BILL BLOG

Friday March 14, 2025

Friday morning arrives and the beginning of St. Pats weekend is on us.

And with that comes some strong storms over a large part of the south this weekend. 80 for a high today in Nashville. I’m traveling to Huntsville, Alabama this afternoon and will be checking with the weather folks often.

YESTERDAY

I wrote with my friend from Livingston, Tennessee Mark Houser and a friend he brought with him to the writing room Emily Hadley who’s also from Livingston.

Mark has been sharing openly his battle with cancer so it was good to hug him and see his optimism about the future and the fight he’s in the middle of. Like all of us, I hate the word cancer. But Mark could not have a better attitude about what he’s going through and you can’t help but admire that.

Emily is just starting to get serious about writing songs, and I was her first co-write outside of her writing with Mark. She plays piano so it was great to write something together that’s going to work as a piano-based song. It was a pleasure meeting and getting to know her a bit.

SONG OF THE DAY

Today’s song is a duet recorded by Angus Gill and Jerry SalleyLet’s Have a Drink” (To Not Drinking Again). And there’s quite a story behind this fun song.

If you watch or have watched the “Gaither Family” on TV then you’re probably familiar with Aaron Wilburn who was a funny man who also wrote a lot of hits…especially southern gospel hits. Aaron passed from COVID a few years ago…sadly. I wrote two or three times with him, Angus was friends with him and had also written with him, and Jerry Salley was so close to Aaron that he was one of his pallbearers at his funeral in Alabama.

The last time Angus Gill was with Aaron Wilburn, Aaron gave him a great title that he thought the two of them should write. Guess what that title was? Yep. Today’s “Song of the Day” title. So, after Aaron passed, Angus asked me and Jerry to write that title with him to honor our late friend. He and Jerry then recorded the song as a duet that you can hear by clicking on the link. Angus put it on his Scrapbook Album and we honored our friend by crediting him as an equal writer in the credits.

We lost a funny-good man. RIP Aaron.

Here’s a VIDEO sample of Aaron Wilburn doing his thing.

HEALTH NOTES

Long Island, New York faces a rabies warning after 2 raccoons are confirmed to be infected and the disease may be spreading.

COVID caused a shortage of Doctors and Nurses. A report says that rural hospitals are still struggling with that today.

A study finds that Aspirin could target cancer cells that have metastasized from tumors and keep the cancer from spreading.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

I parked in another slot.

MORE FLYING NEWS

Every day, seemingly, there’s another Airline story. Today’s is about an American Airlines flight in Colorado Springs, Colorado that sent passengers out on the wings as a fire broke out. I don’t know if there are more incidents than ever before, or if they just didn’t report every story before. But it’s hard to ignore.

AI THIS

A study claims that AI search engines return incorrect information at a 60% rate. That’s it. I’m buying a set of Encyclopedias again. Remember them?

MORE TECH STUFF

Apple is rumored to be making earbuds that will allow you to translate a foreign language live. So, if I go back to Germany to visit my daughter and son-in-law, if I have these in my ears and I’m talking to a local it will translate their German into English.

And if they have them in their ears, it will translate my English into German. Give me a pair of those bad boys!

BLOOD MOON

That blood moon-lunar eclipse will show up early tomorrow morning. If I want to see the moon turn red, I need to set an alarm for about 2:30 AM. Somebody take a picture of it for me.

HEADLINE

A Devil Otter Ate My Mini-Van. (Now that will ruin your commute to work)

TODAY

A busy Friday.

First, I have a writing session with my longtime friend and head of Billy Blue Records Jerry Salley, and an Australian female artist Jayne Denham who has a bit of “rock” tucked into her country music.

It will be fun to see what we can come up with for her.

Then early this afternoon I’ll jump into a car with a couple of songwriters and head to Huntsville, Alabama for a Freedom Sings USA event where tonight we’ll have dinner with some veterans, and then tomorrow each of us will write with one of those vets. And Saturday night each songwriter will perform those songs in concert to honor those who have given our country so much. Looking forward to that.

Have a great Friday!

Storm Weary...Wrestling Church...Gators

BILL BLOG Friday April 4, 2025  Friday morning in soggy Nashville.   YESTERDAY It was another day of storms, tornadoes, and a whole lot of flooding. And it sounds like we could get more and nobody wants that. Folks are storm-weary from the constant flood and tornado warnings that have been lighting up our phones for the past couple of days and nights. Hallways have become bedrooms for some. Schools are still closed today because of the flooding and damage and the weather forecast predicts that we are still not done with this system that just won’t go away. There are now 5 confirmed deaths so far.   Across the region where these storms have been constant the weather service has issued over 300 tornado warnings. There were a lot of big wind-walls like this one that hit near Nashville.   Selmer, Tennessee…also near Nashville was really hit hard.   Our house is on a hill so we don’t worry much about flooding. But I’m going to...

A Baby Song...Parrot Head Show...Spring Break

BILL BLOG Wednesday April 16, 2025   Over the hump we try to go. It’s Wednesday. The high will be 69 in Nashville today but we’re going up into the 80’s for the rest of the week. It’s going to start feeling like summer around here.   YESTERDAY I wrote with Katrina Burgoyne , who moved here from Australia several years ago, got married, and is now the mom of a 1-year-old girl. And that little girl and the first year of being a mom in a new country was weighing on her heart. She had a start on a song that spoke to that, and I got to jump in and help her finish the song. These are the kinds of songs that will make a mom cry during the songwriting process, as Katrina did yesterday. That’s a good sign that the tune might touch the hearts of other moms whenever she sings this anywhere. I was happy to be her co-writer on this yesterday.     MOTM GIG I found out yesterday that my friend Brent Burns and I will be playing a show on one of the ma...

Shows Ahead...A New Line Dance...Tax Day

BILL BLOG Tuesday April 15, 2025  And a Happy Tuesday to y’all. Another storm rolled through here late last night that got a little loud. After a high of 84 in Nashville yesterday we’ll have a high of just 63 today. And that’s why the storm rolled through I’m guessing.   YESTERDAY I had yesterday off from any appointments so I caught up on some things. My calendar will be full of traveling and shows in the back half of the year, so it’s nice to have some downtime for the next couple of months. Here’s a look at the upcoming shows through the end of May.   Thursday, May 1 I’ll be at the Listening Room Café here in Nashville with “Hits & Grins” alongside Steve Dean and Victoria Venier . This will be a 6 pm dinner show.   Friday May 2, I’m at the Omni Hotel in downtown Nashville for a private corporate event where myself and several other writers will be writing songs with corporate folks that will then be turned into line dances. ...
