Friday February 21, 2025
Friday morning has rolled around…the weekend is on us. And I’m also packing a bag for a little sunshine destination today. A high of just 21 in Nashville today but temperatures will rise. By Tuesday we will hit a 60-degree high.
YESTERDAY
Day 5 of the crud and I finally gave up and went to the Doctor and rolled my sleeve up. This had been a lingering thing that just won’t let go of me so I got a little extra help yesterday from the Doc. “Get plenty of rest” was her suggestion and I feel like that’s all I’ve done since it hit me. I’ve slept for a year it feels like in the last week.
And then there’s this old joke about being sick in the winter.
The plague, the flu, and the common cold walked into a bar. So I asked, “What kind of sick joke is this?”
ROAD AHEAD
I’ll be enjoying some downtime for sure this next week on the beach and recharging for what will be a busy 3-week period of shows on the road, starting with a run to Crockett and then Marshall, Texas with shows on March 6 and 7 with Linda Davis & Lang Scott and our “Evening in the Round” show.
Then March 14 & 15 I’m in Huntsville, Alabama with Freedom Sings USA writing songs with our veterans.
And lastly March 21 in Americus, Georgia with Linda and Lang.
Details on all these shows in the TOUR section here on the website.
SONG OF THE DAY
Today I’m sharing the song “Church Bells A Ringin” recorded by award-winning bluegrass artist Danny Paisley that was one of the songs included on the “Blue Collar Gospel” album…Songs of Rick Lang”. This was Rick’s idea and the day before that writing appointment he sent me a few lyrics to his idea that I loved. By the next morning, I had already added some more lyrics and found a melody for the song.
I see some of New Hope Baptist Church in Missouri where I went to church with my family when I was young in this song.
HEALTH NOTES
The SNL 50th Anniversary show aired this weekend. A lot of celebrities and ex-cast members gathered in New York. And that led to Martin Short coming down with COVID.
A new study suggests that taking Niacin may lower the risk of kidney stone risk by 22%.
New Mexico is reporting that the Texas measles outbreak has now crossed over the border into their state.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
Love that. Just wish I would have seen it before some other songwriters saw it and then wrote it into this SONG that George Strait recorded. Dang!
PLAY BALL!
Spring Training baseball games begin in earnest today. I’m way past ready. This year they are using the Robo Ump in a lot of these games to call balls and strikes. I’ve seen this in action several times now watching our Nashville Sounds minor league games. The catcher or manager can challenge and ball or strike call and they go to the computer to over-rule. You actually see the trajectory of the pitch on the big screen scoreboards to see if the ball landed in the strike zone or not. And what’s amazing is, the umps are right more times than wrong. At least for now.
Meanwhile in baseball…New Hampshire now has a new minor league baseball team named “The Space Potatoes.”.
Uh huh. I have no idea why. But I love some of the minor-league baseball team names. My daughter gave me a “Montgomery Biscuit” baseball cap a couple of years ago. Love that team name as well.
And then you have the Toledo Mud Hens, the Gastonia Honey Hunters, the Burlington Sock Puppets, The Hartford Yard Goats, and the Carolina Disco Turkeys. What’s not to love?
BURGERS AND BASEBALL
Nashville, or some in Nashville are excited because the city is going to get its first In-N-Out Burger.
I was in LA once broadcasting my radio show that I hosted in Cincinnati at the time covering the Academy of Country Music Awards Show one year. One of my radio buddies who worked the LA market for a few years was also out there he and I and a couple of other buddies went out and caught an LA Angels baseball game. Once inside the stadium, my friend suggested that we get an In-N-Out Burger. They had a stand in the park there in Anaheim. I’d heard lots about this burger from my friend. For me? It didn’t knock me out like it did him. But the franchise here in Nashville will have a line for sure if you believe what you read.
FAVORITE
My favorite burger place ever is a little place called Krekel Burgers in Decatur, Illinois that was opened up by a friend of mine Bill Krekel many years ago. Much like a “smash” burger before those became popular. I’ve sat and watched him roll up hamburger balls from a bucket and then smash them on the grill. If you are ever in Decatur…go get you one of them.
And to get attention for his little Custard stand my friend would drive around town in this car.
Brings back a lot of great memories of when I played music in that town for a few years and consumed a lot of Krekel burgers.
SELLING STUFF
For the first time in a quarter Amazon sold more stuff than Walmart. Walmart sold 180.5 billion last quarter. Amazon sold $187.8 billion. Neither one’s bottom line is suffering any.
FUNNY WIFE TWEET
The worst part of marriage is when you do something stupid, the best part of marriage is when your partner does something stupid.
FUNNY HUSBAND TWEET
I told my wife, “Honey you need to embrace your flaws.” So, she hugged me.
TRAFFIC JAMS
The American Transportation Institute just listed the cities with the worst trucking bottlenecks. #1 is Fort Lee, New Jersey followed by Chicago, Houston, and Atlanta and then Nashville comes in #5! This city is growing so fast that we have LOTS of anything that has wheels on it.
HEADLINE
County To Pay $250,000 to Advertise Lack of Funds. (That should take care of the problem)
TODAY
Doing a little packing today as I’m headed to some sand on the Gulf of…whatever they’re calling it these days. So Monday’s blog will be coming to you from Panama City in the sunshine I hope.
Have a great weekend.
