3 Times A Lady...Birthday Celebration...Biking Uphill

BILL BLOG

Thursday February 6, 2025

Thursday be here. 69 in Nashville today after some storms rolled through last night with on lightning strike that was SO loud and so near our house that my wife and I had to check our heart rates afterwards. I’m hoping that when the sun rises this morning that I’ll look out the windows and see no downed tree or trees.

Meanwhile 100 million are under ice, and snow alerts in the northeast. I’m very glad to be living in the south…and NOT having to do this.

YESTERDAY

I wrote a new song with Kennedy Scott and Victoria Camp, two of the ladies in the Three Time A Lady Trio that feature wonderful 3-part harmony from these two and their friend Hannah Blaylock. If you’re visiting Dollywood from the first of March until the end of April or so you’ll have a chance to see these three do their musical thing.

We’re hoping that Kennedy will be able to finish all her shows at Dollywood before that boy she’s carrying comes out into the world. She’s very pregnant right now and the baby is due in May…so it could be a close call!

Kennedy and Victoria and myself wrote a new song to add to our little catalog from a wonderful idea Kennedy brought into the writing room yesterday. She had such a good start on it that she made my job pretty easy yesterday and the song turned out great.

Kennedy is also the sly sharp humor in the trio. She and Victoria told me about “Disheartening Daily Affirmations”. And Kennedy texted this one to me last night. “Follow your heart. Your brain just isn’t doing it for ya.”  Sweet ain’t she?

COMPUTER

After our write I headed downtown and spent about 2 hours with my computer guy who not only is sharp, but extremely nice and doesn’t talk down to computer challenged folks…like me. My old one crashed last week, he sold me a rebuilt Mac that I love but I could not find certain files, couldn’t get some of the fonts and views to look like I wanted them too, hand no Word installed and more…and he took care of all of that in the nicest way with no additional charge. Thank you to him and his great little company Z Mac. Things are starting to function normally again computer wise.

LIVE LONG

During my conversation with my computer guy yesterday he was telling me that he thought and I had read that AI technology will one day lead to humans routinely living to be 125 years old. Heck, for now I’d be happy to buy one computer that lasts 125 years.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

To my young Aussie friend and co-writer Angus Gill who turned 27 yesterday. A gathering of his friends celebrated the occasion at a nice restaurant last night. Angus is full time in America now and is working towards being a citizen.

I was seated at a table with several songwriters including a young man who lives in Denmark. He and a friend of his are over here writing songs…and like Angus they too are looking to move to Nashville. This town does that to creative folks worldwide.

Angus and I  have written quite a bit…starting with online writes with me in Nashville and he in Australia and we’ve been blessed to have several of our songs recorded by Australian artists…some of them Angus produced. And Angus’ album “Scrapbook” won a Golden Guitar Award in Australia and the two of us wrote the title track that was written about his Grandma who had Alzheimer’s.

So Happy Birthday to ya Angus!

CHART

This week’s David Pugh’s Gospel Bluegrass Chart is out and I’m part of the #2 AND #3 songs. “Country Faith” from Kristen Leigh Bearfield featuring gospel music great Karen Peck is sitting at 2.

And “God Never Made A Mountain” from Kristy Cox is at #3!  That doesn’t hurt my feelings a bit.

Thank you to my co-writers on “Country Faith. That would be Kristen Bearfield and Tim McGraw’s great guitar player Bob Minner.

Thank you to Josh Shilling and Andrea Pearson for the co-write on “God Never Made A Mountain”.

SONG OF THE DAY

Today’s song a beach song from my friend Becky Denton up in Paris, Missouri “Sanday”…in her mind every day is a “Sanday”. She and her husband love Tybee Island in Georgia and had just gotten back from a trip there and wanted to write a beach tune.

And she had the title which launched this song. Enjoy.

HEALTH NOTES

Dairy herds in Nevada have tested positive for newer bird flu strain that’s been linked to severe human infections.

Scientists say that exercise instantly improves memory, recall and retention.

Ozempic is suspected in more cases of sudden vision loss.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Pretty sure I would have figured that out without someone hanging a sign.

HARD TO BELIEVE

A 7th version of the movie Jurassic Park will hit theaters this summer. I saw the first one…my heart and nerves were not up to watching the following 5. But for those who love to watch at T-Rex devour a scientist…here’s the TRAILER for movie #7. And it does look pretty exciting.

 SUPER BOWL

One more Super Bowl commercial we’ll be seeing come Sunday for the big game in New Orleans. This one for Uber Eats starring Martha Stewart and a friend.

And FYI. A Motel Six in New Orleans is charging $505 for a room for the Super Bowl. That’s Tom Bodet leaving and “expensive” light on for you.

COMING UP…TOO SOON

Valentine Day is just 8 days away. What to get the person you love. I know…I’m no good at it either. But this year I’m going to wear this T-shirt on Valentine Day.

Hopefully my wife won’t want to return the shirt…or me.

EXERCISE TREND

They (whomever they is) say that skiing uphill is growing in popularity. Uh huh.

There’s a perfectly good chair lift one can catch and ski DOWNHILL. How do these folks do that?

I remember thinking that years ago when I did a show in beautiful Steamboat, Colorado. On an off day I rented a bike and put it on the back of the chairlift, rode to the top, and then started biking DOWN the mountain. And I was amazed when I passed folks biking UP the danged mountain!

When I finally got to the bottom of the mountain I thought, “maybe I should try that”. And then I saw a donut shop and quickly did away with that idea.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Prisoner Serving 2,000-Year Sentence Could Face More Time. (Not sure how that works…but there ya go.)

TODAY

I’m off to write with Alex Miller and Wil Nance out at Wil’s little farm close to me. If you think I’m country? I pale in comparison to these guys. Pretty sure we’ll be writing some non-Beyonce country tune today.

Have a great Thursday!

A Bluebird Show...New Album In The Mail...An Interview With An Old Friend

BILL BLOG Tuesday November 26, 2024   Tuesday morning…couple days away from carving the turkey. 50 for the high today here in Music City…bracing for some cold weather on the way.   YESTERDAY I had nothing musical on the calendar yesterday…but had one of those “had to do” things that took up a chunk of my day. Sometimes you can’t control a calendar…the calendar controls you and give you no choice. But there was some good news that came rolling in.   NEW SHOW On Tuesday January 28 I’ll be hosting a songwriter round at the world famous Bluebird Café. And the great part about this news is that I’m going to be able to add my longtime friend Brent Burns to this show…something that’s been a bucket list item for him.   And I’m so glad that I’m the one who will get to make this happen for him. EVERY songwriter wants to play the Bluebird. And somehow, even though my friend lived in Nashville and wrote very seriously for a long while, he ne...

Quiet New Year...Ray Stevens...A Look Back

BILL BLOG January 1, 2025   Wednesday…bring with it the very first day of a New Year. Time flies don’t it?   YESTERDAY A lazy New Year’s Eve day around the Whyte House. My wife and I called our daughter Heather over in Germany to wish her a Happy Birthday…yep a New Year’s Eve kid. She and her husband Casey were in a theme park in the Netherlands called “Efteling” to celebrate the occasion. The two of them took us there when we were over in Germany last year so in our minds at least…we could picture where they were at. More on the Germany trip at the end of today’s Blog in the “Looking Back” section.   TWEAKING I also spent a little time on the phone with producer-writer-singer Jerry Salley who is recording a song I helped write with my friend Andrea Pearson tweaking some lyrics of that song that young-talented bluegrass artist Caroline Owens is getting ready to record on her next album. Heck of an up-tempo tune and we wanted to make s...

Fast Writing...Chart Action...Fun Duet

BILL BLOG Friday January 3, 2025   Friday morning and here comes the first weekend of the New Year. 42 for the high today but the forecast is showing we might get some rain and snow on Sunday. Nobody round here need that.   YESTERDAY I wrote with Thomm Jutz out at his house studio east of Nashville. Good stuff always seems to happen when I write with him. And yesterday was no exception. I brought a start to a song he liked, and we were finished in an hour I’d say and then recorded the song. Tom is such a tasty guitarist and he always makes anything I have mucho better.   And Thomm and I share the fact that we are both fast writers. As I packed up my guitar and walked out of the studio he joking said, “the only problem writing with you is that it takes SOOOO long.”    Good day of rhyming.   CHART Glad to see our song “ God Never Made A Mountain” by Kristy Cox , written with Andrea Pearson and Josh Shilling is still han...
