A Voice Winner...A Radio Interview...Frank Brown Festival Schedule

BILL BLOG

Friday August 30, 2024

Friday morning and we’re rolling into the very last of August this weekend. It’s staying hot. 98 for a high today.

YESTERDAY

I wrote with Todd Tilghman the winner of the “Voice” as part of “Team Blake” during the 2020 season…yep…the year of COVID. And he won online because there was no “live” audience. Blake and the other judges that year watched him on their computers and he was crowned the winner while social distancing if you will.

Todd can sing almost any kind of music, but because he was a pastor for several years there’s always some gospel in his shows. And yesterday I brought him a gospel song idea with a bit of a “rock” edge that he loved…so we finished that thought together.

He’s working towards an album project with a major producer in the not too distant future. So we tried to add something to the pile of songs he’s been writing and collecting for consideration when it comes time to choosing which songs will make the project. One never knows, but I do know we wrote a song yesterday that will at the very least be competitive. We’ll see.

Time well spent with Todd yesterday at my publishing company…not to mention…fun!

A RADIO INTERVIEW
I’ll be on WANT Radio in Lebanon, Tennessee this morning at about 9:05 Nashville time to promote my show with Steve Dean & Victoria Venier tomorrow evening at Starstruck Farm in Lebanon. I appreciate MJ Lucas for her time and allowing me to plug our “Hits & Grins” show at Reba’s old estate.

SONG OF THE DAY

Every now and then I like to share something I helped write that’s been recorded and I’m going to try and do that here on the Blog every day for a bit.

So for the “Song of the Day” I’m sharing “If Not Now, When” that Brent Burns recorded. Brent wanted to write a song about those of us who keep saying we are going to do something we’ve longed to do for a while but never seem to find the time to do it. And I think we captured that thought pretty well in this song.

A BEACH FESTIVAL

The schedule rolled out yesterday for the Frank Brown Songwriters Festival down in Gulf Shores-Orange Beach that I’ve been playing at for more years than I can remember. Always a great time as a bunch of Nashville songwriters play their original songs and tell their stories up and down the coast line there. What’s not to love?

Here’s my schedule this year.

Friday November 8 I have two shows.

5 pm at the Woodside Restaurant in Gulf Shores State Park with Brent Burns.

8:15 pm at the Warrior Beer Company in Pensacola with Wil Nance.

Saturday November 9…I’m with Steve Dean and Victoria Venier for a “Hits & Grins” show at Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach for a 7 pm show.

Sunday November 10 a 7 pm show at the Flora-Bama with “Hits & Grins”.

And then Monday November 11 a very special show at the Coastal Arts Center in Orange Beach with Freedom Sings USA that starts at 6 pm. Songwriters Bobby Tomberlin, Wil Nance, Irene Kelley, Steve Dean, Mutt Cooper and myself will be singing songs that we’ve written with our veterans. Don’t miss this one if you’re coming to the festival.

HEALTH NOTES

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition is claiming that half the world consumes insufficient amounts of micronutrients that are essential to health,, including calcium, iron and vitamins C and E.

More health folks are saying that pickles are healthy and they are good for weight loss as they have a lot of water in them. (I keep hoping they’ll say Mac n Cheese is healthy too…but so far…nope.)

New research suggests that sleeping longer on weekends could lower heart disease risk by 20%.

FUNNY T-SHIRT

Whomever came up with this is obviously not all that optimistic about marriage.

Which leads to this comedic observation, “Do not argue with a spouse who is packing your parachute.”

EXPENSIVE PLACES TO LIVE

US News & World Report just listed the most expensive cities to live in.

5…New York City

4…New Haven, CT

3…Miami

2…LA

And the most expensive city to live in is Hartford, CT.

A lot cheaper if you choose to live in Minot, North Dakota. Especially if you choose to buy a house there in February.

ARE WE TIP CRAZY OR WHAT?

That tip option is for your Taxi cab driver. Starting at 25%.

And you still tip if you pumped the gas yourself?!…I don’t think so.

And here’s the worst. A tip bucket on top of the porcelain.

Yep…we’ve gotten stupid about tipping.

THEM AND US

Steph Curry with the Golden State Warriors NBA team is my favorite basketball player. His HIGHLIGHT REEL is mind boggling. How he can hit 3’s from those distances consistently is so incredibly entertaining. How entertaining? His team just gave him a one year extension of 62.6 MILLION dollars to keep doing what he’s been doing. He should be able to struggle by on that for a year I would think.

NAKEDA

So in Nashville we have this statue that sits at a roundabout on Music Row they call “Musica”. Some locals like yours truly refer to it as “Nakeda” since it’s a statue of a bunch of folks with no clothes on. Some call that “art’. I’m not smart enough to see the art I guess.

Anyway, from time to time those naked statues get dressed up. Like on St. Pat’s day when all of a sudden you see them with green clothing.

Right now they are all wearing bell bottom jeans to celebrate the new country album from “Whirlwind” from the Female Vocalist of the Year Lainey Wilson who’s as famous for her bell bottom “look” as she is for her music.

I’m guessing her record label folks came up with the idea.

I can’t wait to see what they do with the statue when Jellyroll releases his next album.

TODAY

A day off today…time to get prepped for a “Hits & Grins” show tomorrow night at Starstruck Farm in Lebanon, TN. Dinner at 7…show at 7:45 pm. Come join us for the fun we’ll surely have.

Have a great weekend!

BILL BLOG Friday July 26, 2024   Friday morning…rolling into a late July weekend. 82 for the high in Twang Town today with a little rain in the mix.   YESTERDAY I had a very full Wednesday that started with writing a new funny song with young Ethan Phillips who walked into the writing room and said something in conversation that led us to writing what he said about women being compared to a volcano. We may have had WAY too much fun writing that thought. And it could very well turn out to be a song I put on my set list from time to time when I’m out performing.   LUNCH We finished up in time for me to run down south of Nashville to have lunch with my friends Linda Davis & Lang Scott and our mutual friends Richard & Donna Lynch who run a wonderful venue in Waynesville, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati called the “Keep It Country Farm”.   Linda, Lang and myself did a show for them last year and had the best time. They turned part of their f

BILL BLOG Thursday July 18, 2024   Here it be…Thursday already. We had some needed rain roll in last night…pretty heavy and it’s going to cool things off here in Nashville. Today’s high will only be 83 after being in the high 90’s for several days. That’s going to feel like a breath of fresh air…literally.   YESTERDAY Another free day yesterday so pretty lazy around the Whyte House. I did some voting yesterday as the early round are up for voting in both the CMA Awards and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. So I cast early votes in both…final round voting will come later. Good luck to all and there are so many who deserve to win.   A JINGLE I talked with my northern Missouri friend Becky Denton yesterday as she was in town with her talented husband Will Denton who plays both drums and piano and he was in Nashville prepping for a show with a Tom Petty tribute band that he’s part of. A couple of years ago the three of us wrote a song to pitch to the Merschman

A Monte Cristo...A Trop Rock Show...An Upside Down Weenie

BILL BLOG Tuesday, July 23, 2024   Tuesday is rolling in. We had some rain yesterday, more coming today with a high of 82.   YESTERDAY I wrote with Alex Miller again yesterday…tore into a “country” song idea Alex brought with him in his back pocket that turned out to be something fun to chase in the writing room. The former American Idol kid is staying busy with dates back home in Kentucky and up in Ohio this weekend. He’s been in studio some as well and will be releasing a couple of new singles before the first of the year, one being a VERY fun country duet with “Voice” star Emily Ann Roberts that the 3 of us wrote one day that really shows off both of their fun and “country” personalities. Can’t wait for that to come up out.   SOMETHING NEW After we finished we grabbed lunch at a close local diner, the Music City Cafe that draws a lot of locals as well as a lot of country stars through the years. I had a “Monte Cristo” for the first time. Ham, c
