Friday morning…rolling into a late July weekend. 82 for the high in Twang Town today with a little rain in the mix.
YESTERDAY
I had a very full Wednesday that started with writing a new funny song with young Ethan Phillips who walked into the writing room and said something in conversation that led us to writing what he said about women being compared to a volcano. We may have had WAY too much fun writing that thought. And it could very well turn out to be a song I put on my set list from time to time when I’m out performing.
LUNCH
We finished up in time for me to run down south of Nashville to have lunch with my friends Linda Davis & Lang Scott and our mutual friends Richard & Donna Lynch who run a wonderful venue in Waynesville, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati called the “Keep It Country Farm”.
Linda, Lang and myself did a show for them last year and had the best time. They turned part of their farm-ranch into a music venue that hosts country acts each year in season for several months in a row. Dinner and a show kind of thing. And they pack them in.
Our mutual songwriter friend Bobby Tomberlin also joined us for lunch as he and his girlfriend Tess Frizzell (yep…related to the Frizzell country music family). Her Mom is Shelly West who’s a country star with her biggest hit “You’re TheReason God Made Oklahoma” that she recorded with David Frizzell. Huge hit back in the day. And Shelley West’s mother was the great Dottie West who we lost several years ago. So there was a lot of traditional country folks gathered together for lunch.
Richard is recording a new album in Nashville, that’s the reason he and his wife Donna were in town. Such a good time, and it looks like they want to book our “Evening in the Round” trio with Linda, Lang and me again, and we can’t wait to go back.
HEALTH NOTES
Some health experts are comparing flax seed to Botox. Healthy for your skin apparently…with no needle involved.
A nutritionist pointed out that there are 7 health benefits that come with eating watermelon. It’s good for hydration, maintaining weight, eye health, boosts the immune system, relieves muscle soreness, improves digestion, and it’s good for your skin. (I think I’ll go thump one at the store today)
The American College of Sports Medicine listed their top cities for health and fitness. #1 is Arlington, Virginia. And the least healthiest city they say is Oklahoma City.
SOME SOLID THINKING HERE
GLADIATOR
The movie Gladiator II is getting ready to roll out. I’m not a huge fan of the original myself but this one does look good if you like those kinds of movies. Part of the reason is that Denzel Washington is in it. He’s one of those guys I like watching in almost any movie he’s in. Here’s the TRAILER that’s just been released.
I got to see the Coliseum in Rome a few years ago with my wife when we toured Italy with my friend Brent Burns and a group that signed up to go with us. You can’t help but imagine what that must have looked like in the day when the gladiators fought for their lives on that arena floor.
That happens I think anytime I look at a battle sight. I visited Gettysburg once and when you stand on top of “Big Top” and look down at that open field…you can envision the Confederates marching out of the woods on one side and the Union on the other meeting in the middle.
Same with Pearl Harbor when I was there. You can almost imagine the Japanese planes coming into that harbor bombing our ships.
And anytime one visits places like that you just shake your over the mostly senseless loss of lives. At least I do.
WHERE YA LIVE
A new poll reveals that 40% of Americans feel stuck living where they are. Inflation prevents them from buying and moving anywhere else. And 43% in the poll said they rent instead of own.
What’s that inflation joke?
“I just ate a popsicle and sold the stick for $30 as lumber.”
NOT WORRIED ABOUT INFLATION
That would be Jeff Bezos…the owner of prime who’s worth a LOT of money. How much? They say that if Bezos spent a million dollars every day he would not run out of money for 544 years! Yep. I don’t think ole Jeff is worried about the high price of groceries and gas.
OPENING CEREMONIES
That’s today in Paris for the Summer Olympics. Every time the Olympics roll around I think I’m probably not going to watch a lot of it. And then I get caught up in the competitions. Celine Dion will sing at this one, the first time in a long while for her, and the athletes will arrive on boats going down the Seine River. So that will be different.
For the record I’m taking the Americans to win the gold in Pickleball, Cornhole and the NASCAR race. We’ll see.
TODAY
Nothing huge on my calendar for today and through the weekend. But things are
going to start getting busier with show dates.
August 2 in Huntsville, Alabama.
August 7 at McNamara’s Irish Pub in Nashville.
August 9 & 10 in Shiloh, Illinois.
August 17 in Tullahoma, Tennessee at the South Jackson Performing Arts Center.
August 31 at Starstruck Farms in Lebanon, Tennessee.
Complete details on all of these upcoming shows can be found my website in the “Tour” section.
Have a great weekend!
