Songwriter Trio...Celine In French...Flip Phones Again

BILL BLOG

Wednesday July 24, 2024

It’s “Hump Day” Wednesday y’all. 82 will be the high in Nashville today with a chance of some rain again.

YESTERDAY

I had the pleasure of sitting with and writing with two very talented ladies Lauren Mascitti and Kristen Leigh Bearfield. The three of us have had a little luck having some songs we’ve written together get recorded so we were trying to write another one that someone will love enough to record. And I think we may have done that.

Both girls are REALLY busy. Lauren just recorded a new duet with young Kenny Haas, and artist from Chicago called “Drive Me Crazy” that’s so good.

And Kristen is on a plane to Norway this weekend for a two and a half week tour over there with our mutual friend Kinsey Rose. Kristen was recently named the TV host of “Faith, Country and Bluegrass” which will be a TV series out soon. She and I and Tim McGraw’s guitar player Bob Minner wrote the theme song for the TV show and she told me they are in the process of mixing it right now. Some of our song will be played during the show every time it airs, so that was some great news to hear.

A great day of writing and catching up with friends yesterday.

TOUR DATES

I was to be in Little Rock in the middle of August for a Freedom Sings USA retreat writing with veterans but that has been cancelled and will be rescheduled in February it looks like.

Meanwhile possible new dates are being worked on that could put me in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and yet another date or two in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Stay tuned for more info on those possible dates.

Again, my next show will be a week from this Friday in Huntsville, Alabama for the Jim Parker Songwriter Series. Get your tickets.

SONGWRITING CLASS

Every now and then I’ll be online trying to help folks make their songs better. Those appointments happen from those writers who are part of my friend Brent Baxter’s online program Songwriting Pro. Several months ago I helped a fellow Missourian named Rachel Cintula shape up a song she had written about her relationship with her Father. Rachel liked the finished product so much she had a friend-artist by the name of Chris Smothers record the song acoustically. The song title is “Dent In Me”. Click the link to hear the finished product if you’d like.

HEALTH NOTES

There’s a one-dose nasal spray that some experts are saying that clears toxic Alzheimer’s proteins to improve memory.

A study concludes that Humble Oat could mimic the effects of weight loss products like Ozempic and Wegovy.

Some research is suggesting that CBD may help prevent sun damage and protect the skin from UVA rays.

SIGN OF THE DAY

I’m guessing the person who grabbed the chalk to write those words probably doesn’t go out much.

WORMY

Texas has had a lot of rain recently that followed a hurricane that knocked power out for a long while for a lot of residents in that region. Now comes word that the rains have flushed out poisonous 1-inch worms that regenerate when chopped in half! So you get two of them squirming around. Yikes. I’ve decided after seeing this Hammerhead Flatworm that I don’t want to live near them.

THEM AND US

Celine Dion will be paid 2 million dollars to sing one song for the Opening Ceremony for the Paris Olympics starting this Friday. Good work if you can get it. It will be nice to see and hear Celine though as she’s battling stiff person syndrome and this will be her first time singing since she’s had that. A comeback of sorts. Good for her.

I do have a personal (sort of) story about Celine.

Years ago my wife, daughter and myself vacationed in Cozumel. We stayed at an all-inclusive resort right on the water. Beautiful. And every evening the little resort put on some kind of show under the stars. One night the three of us are sitting outside waiting for the show to start. There was music playing over the sound system and the singer was singing in French. And I was so impressed that after a couple of songs I walked back to the sound guy and asked, “Who is that”?  Yep. Celine Dion…who I knew nothing about at the time. When I got back home the first thing I did was go out and buy that CD. Still have it.

So yea, it’s nice to see Celine making a comeback on a big stage Friday night.

FLIP PHONES

What’s old is new again. Flip phones are already available again, and more of them will be coming at us soon as Apple just announced that they too will have a flip-phone model. I thought they were long gone…like this car phone I had at one time.

CAN’T WAIT

Glen Powell, the actor who played “Hangman” in Top Gun 2 announced that filming for Top Gun 3 has begun. “Top Gun: Maverick” was SO fun. It will be fun to see where the storyline goes now. But I’m betting the “Hangman” has an even bigger role in this sequel.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Fish Falls From Sky Onto New Jersey Couple’s Tesla. (The good news is that deciding what to fix for dinner was an easy decision.)

TODAY

I’ll be rhyming with Thomm Jutz today at his home recording studio. Truly a gifted songwriter and player. At one time in his life Thomm was out on the road with Nanci Griffith…one of my favorite songwriter-artists. Nancy passed away several years ago. If you’re a music lover, check out this interview of Thomm talking about his old boss Nancy. I get to hear those kinds of stories when I get to write with him…a nice bonus every time.

Have a great Wednesday!

Freedom Sings USA Event...A Gold Star Mom...An Old Friend Surprise

BILL BLOG Monday September 9, 2024 Monday morning and I’m back home in Nashville from Marion, Illinois. Sunshine and a high of 84 today here in Music City.       THE WEEKEND Thursday I made the three hour trip up to Marion, Illinois for our Freedom Sings USA songwriter retreat with songwriters Bobby Tomberlin , Steve Dean , Irene Kelley, and Don Goodman.   Marion is in southern Illinois…beautiful town and the folks who organized the event were so kind and passionate about honoring their veterans. Friday night they had a “meet and greet” in a beautiful old church where we had a great dinner and then played a show for all of those who attended. The Mayor, the organizers and the veterans.   Each songwriter met the veteran they were going to write with that night. This is mine. His name is Art Fager .   More on Art in a second.   FRIDAY Friday morning we gathered in yet another church for early breakfast and then each songwriter sat down wit

Beach Rhymes...Football Kickoff...Freedom Sings USA Trip

BILL BLOG Thursday September 5, 2024   Thursday arises and I have a day of traveling to Marion, Illinois. More on that at the end of today’s Blog. Back up to 90 with sun today.   YESTERDAY I wrote with Darrell Clanton yesterday for the first time. Darrell lives in Lakeland, Florida with his wife and back in the day he was an artist here in Nashville and had a couple of country songs on the charts, and had several folks record his songs.     These days Darrell and his band “Bad Habit” are very active in the Trop Rock genre playing a lot of beach music and beach shows. A couple of years ago Darrell and I played the Jim Parker Songwriter Show in Huntsville, Alabama along with my buddy Brent Burns . And then Darrell and I just played it again a few months ago. Then yesterday I really got to know him and we did write a beach song for him.   We’ll be writing more for sure in the future. And there’s a chance that sometime next year that we’ll do a cruise toget

Funny Song...Music Luncheon...Gladiator

BILL BLOG Friday July 26, 2024   Friday morning…rolling into a late July weekend. 82 for the high in Twang Town today with a little rain in the mix.   YESTERDAY I had a very full Wednesday that started with writing a new funny song with young Ethan Phillips who walked into the writing room and said something in conversation that led us to writing what he said about women being compared to a volcano. We may have had WAY too much fun writing that thought. And it could very well turn out to be a song I put on my set list from time to time when I’m out performing.   LUNCH We finished up in time for me to run down south of Nashville to have lunch with my friends Linda Davis & Lang Scott and our mutual friends Richard & Donna Lynch who run a wonderful venue in Waynesville, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati called the “Keep It Country Farm”.   Linda, Lang and myself did a show for them last year and had the best time. They turned part of their f
